Scarf and Giraffe don't rhyme

Another night ready Julia Donaldson books and another frustrating non-rhymey rhyme.

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme. Neither do plant and can't.

Anyone else??

Maybe more like pill-ur. But there’s an audible r.

Gaw-rill-ah

pill-ar. With an r. Audibly.

It's the oi frog rhymes that I don't understand how they dont rhyme.

How do you pronounce gorilla and pillar?

Scottish and Irish accents pronounce the r.

They don't rhyme.

Like in Superworm; chant and aunt do not rhyme.

Stresses me out 🙃

Those rhyme for me I say them with a short A sound.

MooseBreath · 13/10/2022 23:16

Canadian here.

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme. Neither do scarf and laugh. Idea and ear don't rhyme. Nee nah and car don't rhyme.

i usually like Julia Donaldson's books, but I hate The Smartest Giant in Town.

Mylittlesandwich · 13/10/2022 23:13

Central Scotland I can rhyme squirrel and girl.

Me too. it’s not quite perfect as a rhyme. But it’s way better than gorilla and pillar which are never going to rhyme in a rhotic accent.

viques · 13/10/2022 23:20

They rhyme.

no returns.

SudocremOnEverything · 13/10/2022 23:22

Here’s a Renfrewshire librarian reading Oi frog. She’s trying bloody hard to produce a voice for that cat that can rhyme all the stupid rhymes.

Threeboysandadog · 13/10/2022 23:41

plant - can’t
one - gun
plant - ant

all rhyme

Ah yes, but you're Canadian.

I've always wanted to visit Canada, is it nice?

StaunchMomma · 13/10/2022 23:43

Depends where you live, surely?

sleepfortheweek · 13/10/2022 23:43

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme because one ends in arf and one ends in affe.

Plant and can't rhyme because they both end in ant

Jenasaurus · 13/10/2022 23:44

scone and cone or scone and gone

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 13/10/2022 23:48

So firstly I'm reminded of a great yoke in some newspaper that asked you "does these words rhyme" about 100 times and then told you where you were from.

Secondly I'm glad that someone brought up sofa and gopher.

Has anyone mentioned Cinderella in the cellar? And the ladybirds idea that she whispered in everyone's ear? Kills me. Every single time I run into those ones.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 13/10/2022 23:49

@MooseBreath nee-nah and car!!!!! Every time I read that I then massively confused myself and start trying to figure out how in the name of god you can get them to rhyme and come completely distracted - thank god it's at the end.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 13/10/2022 23:57

For me, scarf rhymes with giraffe, plant with can't, car with nee-nah. All hinge on an 'aah' sound (like when a doctor tells you to open wide and say 'aah'). Definitely not an 'ar' sound. That's just weird.

Paws, pause, pours? All identical :)

Foxesforme · 14/10/2022 00:47

Me too😀
My poor children were very confused!

ErrolTheDragon · 14/10/2022 00:55

Yes. Or alternatively they can both rhyme with aunt.

Furries · 14/10/2022 01:20

TheOrangeOrange · 13/10/2022 21:30

They rhyme for me... I say can't and plant and they both rhyme with ant 🐜

They both rhyme for me, though they rhyme with aren’t here!

I quite enjoy weird American rhyming books where "squirrel" rhymes with "girl" and "mirror" rhymes with "peer".

I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said "Fresh" and it had dice in the mirror.
If anything I could say that this cab was rare,
But I thought, "nah, forget it - yo, home to Bel Air!"

Giggorata · 14/10/2022 01:52

Oh heavens, don't bring scones into the discussion, or all is lost…

JenniferBarkley · 14/10/2022 02:33

I can't believe it took so long to get to the abominations of idea and ear, and nee-nah and car.

Honestly, the things the English do to the letter R, what did it ever do to you? <tuts>

Sunnidaze · 14/10/2022 02:58

They rhyme for Australians!

onlythreenow · 14/10/2022 04:28

They do where I live.
