Scarf and Giraffe don't rhyme

Another night ready Julia Donaldson books and another frustrating non-rhymey rhyme.

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme. Neither do plant and can't.

Anyone else??

milkysmum · 13/10/2022 22:17

They don't rhyme at all in my accent ( Lancashire).

Boomboom22 · 13/10/2022 22:18

They both rhyme to me!

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 13/10/2022 22:18

Scarf and giraffe thyme

plant and can’t don’t

When my DC we’re learning to read right phonics I thought they were actually at a disadvantage with their southern English accents as putting together the phonics sounds didn’t work for so many basic words. B-a-th = bahth??

FourTeaFallOut · 13/10/2022 22:19

My tie is a scarf for a cold <puts on posh voice> girarrrffe.

Iheartgeraniums · 13/10/2022 22:21

Just wait til you read Oi Frog OP!

LIONS sit on IRONS apparently

GOPHERS sit on SOFAS

I am irish but we read those bits in a comedy Joanna lumley style accent to make it work.

DrFoxtrot · 13/10/2022 22:22

I remember my mind being blown by the revelation that one and gun rhyme in some accents Grin

I was going to mention this! It all rhymes for me, as far as I remember. The dcs have the whole set of books. Where is Kes Gray from I wonder.

DaisyWaldron · 13/10/2022 22:24

I pronounce the letter "r" so there's a whole consonant in "scarf" that isn't is "giraffe". The idea of them rhyming is as ridiculous as rhyming "bank" and "hack". I realise that it's different for people with non-rhotic accents, but it does freak me out just a little bit whenever I think about a group of people who just don't perceive the "r" as a proper consonant, just a sort of vowel modifier.

RiftGibbon · 13/10/2022 22:26

In my accent they rhyme. For my friends with more northern accents they don't rhyme.

strawberryjay · 13/10/2022 22:26

They both do in my accent

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 13/10/2022 22:28

catandcoffee · 13/10/2022 22:16

They rhyme In my saff london accent. 😁

But does South rhyme with giraffe??

Grin
washingbasketqueen · 13/10/2022 22:32

Plant and can't rhyme for me but scarf and giraffe don't at all!

RampantIvy · 13/10/2022 22:32

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/10/2022 21:29

Plant is a short 'a' sound like in Ant. Can't is a longer 'aarr' sort of sound.

No. You're wrong. They are both pronounced the same.

elgreco · 13/10/2022 22:32

Irish here, neither rhymes.
Scar f vs gir aahf
Cah nt vs plan t

SBAM · 13/10/2022 22:33

@Iheartgeraniums Oi Frog is fine but there’s definitely some in the later books that are questionable (I think it’s the ones they claim have no rhyme? But I’m not risking waking the kids just to check the book).

They always add the r in when they're trying to describe how they say things too. 'Oh I say sharn't!' No you do not.

As a Scottish person, I quite often have to put on a faux English accent when reading DD rhyming books Grin

AutumnScream · 13/10/2022 22:40

I put on a faux Scottish accent when reading to DS but that's mainly because it's fun

How can one and gun not rhyme?

Wun

Gun

Oh my god I've only just realised that I've read this out loud about 367 times and had no idea this was supposed to be a rhyming sentence. It always seemed a bit odd!

P.s. do people who have plarnts by their barths take off their parnts before getting in?

ChocolateCrepe · 13/10/2022 22:44

MorrisZapp · 13/10/2022 22:41

Wun

Gun

Won
Gun

But not won as in won a trophy, then that does rhyme with gun but w-on like won-ton

Clear as mud 😁

Hugasauras · 13/10/2022 22:44

@MorrisZapp There was a thread about that fairly recently and I think it's because some people pronounce it like 'wohn' or something.

As ever with these threads and people falling over themselves to declare their way right and others wrong, it's just all about where you are from really.

Scarf and giraffe are two different sounds to me but I can make them rhyme if I do a certain English accent. In my own accent they definitely do not.
