Scarf and Giraffe don't rhyme

Another night ready Julia Donaldson books and another frustrating non-rhymey rhyme.

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme. Neither do plant and can't.

Anyone else??

Plant and can't rhyme perfectly in US English (I know US English has many variations; on this case I mean in the "Ohio Newscaster" generic "proper" accent that's roughly equivalent to UK "received pronunciation").

My 4yo nephew (Scottish) pronounces scarf as skaff (as in "I've got my skaff to keep me waaaam!") so I suppose that does rhyme with giraffe.

They do rhyme. I won’t hear a word against Julia Donaldson.

This!

FamilyTreeBuilder · 13/10/2022 23:02

Julia Donaldson lived in Glasgow for years although she has now returned to southern England. That’s why I’m surprised she didn’t pick up what scarf/giraffe don’t rhyme for northerners and Scots.

Mylittlesandwich · 13/10/2022 23:03

I think we need Julia Donaldson to step in and confirm exactly what accent this giant has to make these words rhyme.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 13/10/2022 23:03

I really want to cuddle an owl in a towel now.

I don’t even expect rhyming picture books to rhyme in my accent. Not Julia Donaldson. None of them.

I don’t put on a fake English accent. I embrace the awkwardness of the non rhymes. Wholeheartedly.

DS had me reading Oi frog tonight (not Donaldson but rhyme based) and I in no way hide that sofa and gopher don’t rhyme. Nor gorilla and pillar. And so on.

It’ll be preparation for when he gets those stupid phonics books that claim that paw, sore and dinosaur all rhyme. I’m not going to pretend they do.

AlwaysLatte · 13/10/2022 23:03

But they do rhyme! 🧐

The gruffalo in Glaswegian however is excellent.

AlwaysLatte · 13/10/2022 23:06

(But they don't rhyme with ant
for me)

Airymanning · 13/10/2022 23:07

Rhymes for me

Airymanning · 13/10/2022 23:08

Iheartgeraniums · 13/10/2022 22:21

Just wait til you read Oi Frog OP!

LIONS sit on IRONS apparently

GOPHERS sit on SOFAS

I am irish but we read those bits in a comedy Joanna lumley style accent to make it work.

These rhyme?

LillyLeaf · 13/10/2022 23:09

None of these examples are rhyming for me (North east accent).

DaisyWaldron · 13/10/2022 23:09

I quite enjoy weird American rhyming books where "squirrel" rhymes with "girl" and "mirror" rhymes with "peer".

west central Scotland.

here an example of the intersection of Julia Donaldson and phonics that does not work in my accent.

They don't rhyme.

Like in Superworm; chant and aunt do not rhyme.

Stresses me out 🙃

It's the oi frog rhymes that I don't understand how they dont rhyme.

How do you pronounce gorilla and pillar?

OP posts:
NC12345665 · 13/10/2022 23:12

They rhyme for southerners and that's all that matters.
There was a quiz show a few months ago that tried to pretend paws, pause and pours all sound the same.

Oh I’d forgotten the lions on irons. All the Oi books are full of dubious rhymes. Yet DS loves them.

They rhyme for me.

I have the advantage with a variety of authors that my parents were northern, with Liverpudlian relatives, but I was brought up dahn sarf , spent 6 years in brum and then moved north again so I can adjust my vowels as necessary.

Yes, they both rhyme absolutely fine.
