The Tories certainly have pummelled the disabled. Applying for PIP and ESA is a horrible, demotivating and upsetting experience where people are treated as fraud until proven otherwise. Many sources of other help have simply vanished (like the Independent Living Fund). The right wing press did a lot of the dirty work for the Tories with their incessant dripping of poison about the disabled.

"The rights of disabled people is a huge issue."

'They have been absolutely pummelled over the last decade'

We have a relative who received an increase in Pip from DLA. Have just has their sg esa increased too. Of course this won't be the same for everyone but to say 'they' have been pummelled over the last decade is not true for everyone.

That rather depends whether the increases were adequate, doesn't it?

SueSaid · 17/05/2022 18:28

'pleased for your family member but we don't have that experience at all and I've had 13 years trying fathom the labyrinthine systems.'

It isn't easy, I know we all disagree on many issues but for anyone dealing with PIP, ESA etc and all the 'computer says no' type staff answering the phones then Wine and Flowers.

Luculentus · 17/05/2022 18:31

Looks like we may be having yet another bye-election

ClaudineClare · 17/05/2022 18:33

PIP rates

Lower weekly rate	Higher weekly rate

Daily living part £61.85 £92.40
Mobility part £24.45 £64.50

ESA support group is around £117 pw I think

Carer's allowance £69.70 (or less than £2 per hour of care provided).

Not exactly riches, is it?

saliwales2022 · 17/05/2022 18:35

I am an unpaid carer, apparently saving the government £119 billion per year. I really want to just walked away from my responsibilities! I have applied for a carer's allowance - don't suppose I'll get it.

Re: Tory Mp arrested. I thought the phrasing around asking him not to come on to the parliamentary estate a bit odd.

It seems that Tory whips haven't suspended the arrested MP because if they did the suspension would need to be recorded and thus might inadvertently "out" his alleged victims.

I imagine the benches on the Tory side at PMQ tomorrow will be rammed. Everyone there not wanting to have any suspicion of them Shock

I saw this about the MP online just now ( daily mail ) , it relates to historic allegations from 02 to 09.

I remember apply for esa many years ago. It was a bloody nightmare. They asked questions like 'What things do you do or say that offend other people?'. I answered 'I'm autistic not an arsehole, I don't go around knowingly offending people. If I was aware of what I was doing I wouldn't bloody do it.'. That was a long time ago and I doubt it's any better now.

That rather depends whether the increases were adequate, doesn't it?

PIP has gone up by £1.85 a week and DLA by a whopping £0.75.

Disabled people must be laughing all the way to the food bank.

BREAKING: The House of Commons votes by 310 to 248 against Labour's motion to impose a windfall tax on oil and gas producers.
Not a single Conservative MP voted in favour of imposing a windfall tax on oil and gas producers.

Bastards. They really haven’t got a clue.

Notonthestairs · 17/05/2022 21:22

They'll U-turn. They'll need something to stick on the Mail's front pages when Johnson receives his next FPN.

MarshaBradyo · 17/05/2022 21:24

They’ll likely still do it

Not for Labour’s amendment though

saliwales2022 · 17/05/2022 17:14

Annilese Dodds, Angela Rayner and most importantly Keir Starmer. There are probably others! I think the Lib Dems think the same. And if course the Green party. I am so tired of it all. There is no-one to vote for!

@saliwales2022 Do you have any quotes where those you name specifically state that one can change chromsomes from XX to XY or from XY to XX?

Luculentus · 17/05/2022 21:28

the80sweregreat · 17/05/2022 18:45

Where is that ?

I'm assuming it will be in the constituency of the MP accused of sexual offences.

Wow. That will barely make a dent in the increases in fuel and food costs that have happened and are still happening. It's really very sobering.

Roussette · 17/05/2022 21:36

So agree with a windfall tax U-turn the minute BJ receives another FPN. So predictable if that happens.

The name of the MP accused of rape and sexual assault spanning 6 years.. is out there.
I'm not repeating it at this stage until it's verified more

I wonder if Ed Milliband is able to do such a good job because he is not the leader, and so doesn't have all the burdens that brings

Quite likely. I just think he's good at the despatch box. There are a number of Labour politicians who are good orators.
Ed Milliband, Yvette Cooper, David Lammy etc. And I have a soft spot for Thangam Debbonaire, Shadow Leader of the HoC, I met her once, before she took on this position, she was lovely.

Agree.

Steve Read is very good and a clear speaker too

I was thinking that, no one will want to be linked to those charges.

"The rights of disabled people is a huge issue."

They have been absolutely pummelled over the last decade. We have a disabled teenager. Our closest friends similarly have disabled children and young adults. Cuts to services (education, health, training courses, access to benefits) have had devastating impact. I can't talk about it without getting very emotional - so I won't! But I feel very strongly.

Sadly too true.

I have a disabled son. Once diagnosed it's so hard to access any actual services and dont get me started on the EHCP process
