I must say I can't reconcile parties being illegal for some of the guests but not for others. And I really don't understand how Carrie Johnson managed to have that party and not get a penalty.

But there we are. Stuck with the corrupt charlatan for the foreseeable (or until the next scandal).

jgw1 · 19/05/2022 13:36

Do we think that Boris being able to attend 5 illegal parties but not be fined for attending them make those who did stick to the laws more or less angry about it?

4 or 5 more fines would have finished him off so weighing it up getting fines would have been the bigger blow

You may be right.
But as a blow to the Tory party, still not having the guts to get rid of him, is going to do more long term damage I would have thought.

Roussette · 19/05/2022 13:47

Taken from elsewhere and to remind everyone...

Tories
22 parties
204 attendees
126 people fined
Some 2 or 3 times
Other ongoing investigations
500+ photos
Joking about it
ABBA/Karaoke
Wine Fridays/new fridge
Booze Suitcases
Night before Prince Philips funeral
Leadership failures
Labour
A work takeaway for people working away

We won't see the Gray report until Johnson has finished with it. I imagine Sue Grey is quite efficient and it will be finalised before the weekend. Gives Johnson time to a) generate new headlines (windfall tax, Rwanda - who knows maybe Carrie is expecting again) and b) makes promises to those MPs he thinks might turn on him and c) practice his lessons will be learned speech.

MarshaBradyo · 19/05/2022 13:50

I think partygate is damaging and will continue to be

4 or 5 fines he’d be gone I reckon

The only thing that mutes it slightly is Starmer’s version with the police investigation. I guess he’s up next and more Russian roulette with his own career, but if he is not fined I don’t know how the next election will go. Ditto if he is fined and a replacement steps in

partygate has hit hard but the GE is a while off - it could go either way

You know what, to be Prime Minister I think you ought to know the difference between right and wrong, and not be trying to learn that on the job.

Sebastian Payne FT

🚨 NEW: Understand Simon Case, cabinet secretary, has also not be fined by the Met. No fines at all for the head of the civil service.

Case attended the same surprise birthday party as Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak in June 2020 but was not fined for that:

Notonthestairs · 19/05/2022 14:17

I think right and wrong are pretty meaningless in Johnson's world.

Yes, that's why I don't have many expectations for the Sue Gray report even if it it as damaging as some source say.

Luculentus · 19/05/2022 15:08

If only it had been clearer to us all that we could attend illegal parties perfectly legally, lockdown would have been a whole lot more enjoyable.

Notonthestairs · 19/05/2022 15:22

Gray will be under intense pressure not to pull her punches. But I'm reminded of something a former senior Cabinet minister told me when partygate began:

"Cabinet Office inquiries never find the PM guilty"

twitter.com/sebastianepayne/status/1527249814961934337?s=21&t=qAK1YtCk6bN3XpoMztty5Q

No doubt that today’s news (no additional fines) stabilises the PM’s position with Tory MPs.

It also means the gap between what Tory MPs think and what the public thinks continues to widen. And that is better news for Labour than it is the Conservatives.

If only some people understood eating and drinking together at work does not constitute a party. Ask Starmer, he agrees as does the Met.

What will Pippa and Brand try next!

Is this poll after no more fines news from today?

DuncinToffee · 19/05/2022 16:12

126 people 'misunderstood'

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2022 16:22

I think Tories should be more worried about what Cummings tries next janiie.

Notonthestairs · 19/05/2022 16:24

I think if you are expecting a pro Johnson only 1 FPN bounce you might be disappointed.

I’m not expecting anything but that seems sloppy, or wishful thinking but overall incorrect

Who is the Tweet by? Is it a journalist?

Notonthestairs · 19/05/2022 16:37

Roussette · 19/05/2022 16:38

There will be no bounce and my take on it is... I think there are a lot of worried Tories that BJ will be taking them in to the next GE, and that is a bad thing. For them anyway, not for the country.

I laugh that this is all brushed away with 'just eating and drinking together'. If that's the case the Met IS corrupt for issuing 126 fines. What were they thinking?

If I had been fined for meeting outside with 6 people instead of 2 or whatever (like some students were... fines of £10K etc) I would be taking legal advice to overturn that decision.

If enough MPs are worried though they can oust him

Roussette · 19/05/2022 16:41

I'll be starting a new thread soon if everyone's got the stomach for it.

It will have 'Sue Grey' in the title as it's due next week... complete with photos... Grin

I quite like him to hang around. He's so useless it's both
A. Entertaining
B. More likely to end up with a different governing party (s) at the next election.
He's out of his depth in the damp, it's fantastic to see.
Downside is that he's fucking over the country, but you can't have everything eh?

They obviously just won't though, will they?

There are many who are useless but there because of him. Hence the undying loyalty.

I link any copied tweet so you can always verify author, timing etc. That's why I do it. I'm not trying to disguise anything.
