Can anyone recommend me a gripping podcast?

Preferably British and preferably true crime

I've whipped through all seasons of The Missing and really found that interesting. Was less interested in Fairy Meadow and I don't really like American OTT hosting styles

I've listed to a few UK true crime podcasts with Adam and they're ok but a bit .. dull. Think it's the narration style

Any recommendations please

Warhead. Horrible horrible subject but at least the perpetrators get their comeuppance.

dayswithaY · 05/04/2022 08:57

Someone Knows Something. It's Canadian and quite slow paced, but the host goes deep into small towns to interview people and the pace just builds, it draws you in.

You're Wrong About has some amazing episodes.

West Cork - I enjoyed it but the podcasters were way too sympathetic to Ian Bailey, a vile man who they portray as some sort of wronged hero, that was annoying. Even if he didn't kill Sophie, he's still vile.

Like others, I found Doorstep Murder quite frustrating, so much doesn't make sense and I imagine the answer is staring us in the face rather than IRA connections, dirty money, criminal connections, etc.

Fake heiress is brilliant. BBC podcast

You're wrong about is brilliant and has quite a few crime episodes, I'm so sad Mike left as it's just not the same now with just sarah (and maintenance phase doesn't interest me as much as YWA) but there's loads of old episodes to work through

Kreuzberg · 05/04/2022 10:23

'Hunting warhead' - sorry got the name wrong

I've not listened for a while but was going to go back to it once Ive finished Extraordinary Stories and also The Thing about Helen and Olga.
When did he go? Do you roughly know what episode?

HardRockOwl · 05/04/2022 11:01

Tried an episode of 'British Scandals' for my swim this morning as I'm quite interested in the John Darwin story

I hated it sadly. I can't bear Alice Levine chipping in constantly with really inane unfunny comments - just like she does on 'my dad wrote a porno' which rendered that unlistenable to me

So I'm sure some people love it but it's everything I hate in a podcast so that's one off the list for me!

I feel exactly the same. I was looking forward to it but I couldn’t stand it.
The stories had the potential to be really good listens but we’re completely spoiled by both of the presenters.

HardRockOwl · 05/04/2022 11:48

@notacooldad yep. She was worse than him but it's honestly unbearable to listen to. Really spoilt the whole episode and I won't listen to any more because I know they'll just butcher Lord Lucan

Actually, I think the phrase for it is 'dumbing down.' They're dumbing down to the audience and I'm not sure that's necessary?

Just jumping in to firstly mark this thread so I can work my way through recommendations, and secondly recommend all of these UK (apart from one) podcasts:

Catching Melanie’s Killer
No Strings Attached
The Missing Crypto Queen
Do You Know Mordechai (not British, but good)
Queen of the Con
Who Killed Emma
Where Is George Gibney

OMG The Lovecraft Investigations : The case of Charles Dexter Ward… I’m on Ep 6 and have had to find something to distract me, so I’m here with you guys, my heart is racing and need to let it recover before I go back to find out what happened next. Whoa 😳

Yes! Not just the stories but they're done so brilliantly, I've listened to them twice now and completely gripped the whole way through! Gutted they're not doing another series :(
notacooldad · 05/04/2022 13:29

LethargeMarg
Thanks. I'll make my way back to that podcast!

TragicMuse · 05/04/2022 15:19

@HardRockOwl

Listened to the first episode of Paradise today whilst swimming. Enjoyed it enough to carry on so thanks for that recommendation

Hurrah! Glad it's working for you!

Palloom · 05/04/2022 15:43
@Palloom True Crime Enthusiast is based in Wrexham I think, not sure if that's where he's from originally but could make sense as he seems to have a bit of a Liverpudlian / bit of Mancunian / bit of Welsh twang Grin
Thanks for that information!

This is a great thread. Could you ask MNHQ to move it out of chat so it doesn't disappear? Thanks
Chat doesn't disappear @FiveForAPound but every podcast thread I've seen has pretty much the same recommendations so if you search for those you can always find them

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 05/04/2022 16:47

@HumptyDumpty2022

Thanks for this thread I’m always looking for good true crime podcasts. Try Sweet Bobby, a true story of a woman catfished for 10 years, gripping!
I listened to that after a previous recommendation but didn't find it gripping at all, it just annoyed me that it was so unbelievable. I mean I know it's true but the fact that it went on for so long with noone realising it was all fake.

Has anyone mentioned Shreds yet? It was the first podcast I ever listened to, and none have matched up to it since.
It's about a racist miscarriage of justice in Cardiff Bay with many twists and turns, sadly for the wrongly accused.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 05/04/2022 18:05

Where Is George Gibney

I found this incredibly moving, but it’s not for everyone.

Me! 🙋‍♀️ It really is exceptionally high quality, moving and shocking in equal measure. I recommend it to everyone!
HardRockOwl · 05/04/2022 21:34

I've now downloaded 'catching Melanie's killer' so will give that a go
