Can anyone recommend me a gripping podcast?

Preferably British and preferably true crime

I've whipped through all seasons of The Missing and really found that interesting. Was less interested in Fairy Meadow and I don't really like American OTT hosting styles

I've listed to a few UK true crime podcasts with Adam and they're ok but a bit .. dull. Think it's the narration style

Any recommendations please

I am shamelessly placemarking as I've just started going to the gym and found podcasts pleasantly distracting, I found 5e true crime guy too boring, an American one called killer queens seems quite good but it is very ott style so probably not what your after.

supercalifragilistic123 · 04/04/2022 08:05

The Dropout
Hunting Warhead
The Missing Cryptoqueen
Against all odds
Dr Death
The shrink next door
Dirty John
The original joe exotic one, (I can't remember what it's called!)

Greydogs123 · 04/04/2022 08:07

I was fascinated by the podcast about the post office scandal.

Untold the Daniel Morgan murder, it's exceptional

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 04/04/2022 08:09

@HardRockOwl

Is Serial the one which starts with a high school where a girl goes missing? If so, I know of it. Is it true then? For some reason I thought it was a story?
If you mean Adnan it's totally true and as someone above said still an active case

There are lots of podcasts about missing women so you might be thinking of a different one

I like True Crime Stories or a name like that, an American and Australian looking at all different cases. A bit chatty but mainly on topic and current

Pinzotti · 04/04/2022 08:15

This one. Gripping with twists that you wouldn't believe

Can anyone recommend me a gripping podcast?

Ladies who London.

It's not true crime, but really is excellent.

camperjam · 04/04/2022 08:30

This thread is just what I need, I've added lots to my follow list.

For me I like Redhanded. It's like listening to your friends chatting.

Ooh placemarking to come back to later! 😊

00100001 · 04/04/2022 09:00

Bad People is good too

WorryMcGee · 04/04/2022 09:23

Ooh following this thread as I need podcasts to help me with the wait between Redhanded episodes 😂

I liked the missing cryptoqueen, the dropout, the trojan horse affair, paradise, power corrupts, the lazarus heist, dr death, dirty john, serial - including S Town, the coming storm…

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 09:39

Ok I've downloaded episode 1 of Paradise as I don't know the story at all and it's British and seems like my thing!

So many good suggestions on here! I'll be working through them all.

They need to be quite gripping for me as I find my attention starts wandering otherwise! Podcasts are perfect if you're torturing yourself with daily exercise and need to try and forget you are Grin

Paradise is excellent - Chris Farmer’s sister wrote a book called Dead in the Water.

JohannSebastianBach · 04/04/2022 11:08

The Missing Crypto Queen
The Coming Storm
Things Fell Apart
I'm Not a Monster

All on BBC sounds

BritInUS1 · 04/04/2022 11:38

Love Bear Brook

There is a new UK one just launched called Foul Play UK - I have been listening to the US one for a while, but they have just launched a UK version

BritInUS1 · 04/04/2022 11:53

Is anyone going to CrimeCon in London in June?

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 13:17

@BritInUS1 I've just looked at the price of the tickets - having not known it existed before! They're not cheap are they?!!

@CatrinVennastin

British Scandal with Alice Levine and Matt Ford is really good. I’ve just listened to The coughing major (about the couple who cheated on who wants to be a millionaire) and the poisoning of Alexander Livitneko.
Just coming to second this, it's an absolutely brilliant podcast and DH and I have barely watched anything on TV for the last couple of weeks as we've been so gripped catching up on all the past episodes! Highly recommended 👌
Bunce1 · 04/04/2022 13:31

Thanks for all these recommendations going to make list now

aiskabash · 04/04/2022 13:34

I recommend:

The Teacher’s Pet - Australian
Little Lost Girls - Australian
S Town

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 13:44

Listened to the first episode of Paradise today whilst swimming. Enjoyed it enough to carry on so thanks for that recommendation

Australian rather than British but I love Casefile. Sole host, very soothing voice and very detailed about cases. It's mostly one case per episode although there are a few with several parts (notably the Belanglo Backpackers case).

I get what you mean about the sensationalism of some American podcasts. We listen to Morbid and Crime Junkie and they can be over the top, but then I find the same thing sometimes with RedHanded which is British, they're a bit full of their own self-importance at times.

Mens Rea and They Walk Amongst Us are both sole-host too, so no dramatics or tangents.

icelolly12 · 04/04/2022 13:54

Yes @TheYearOfSmallThings I found Sweet Bobby absolutely ridiculous. Also found it very drawn out.

Dr Death is a great podcast.

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 14:05

@ImInStealthMode agreed. I just want a measured delivery that's engaged but not all salacious or shrieking with laughter (I've come across a few of those - err one by someone called Helen Anderson? Couldn't get on with it at all)
