Can anyone recommend me a gripping podcast?

Preferably British and preferably true crime

I've whipped through all seasons of The Missing and really found that interesting. Was less interested in Fairy Meadow and I don't really like American OTT hosting styles

I've listed to a few UK true crime podcasts with Adam and they're ok but a bit .. dull. Think it's the narration style

Any recommendations please

@HardRockOwl

Oh and 'the doorstep murder' is excellent. I recommend that
I'm listening to that at the moment! It's so interesting. That poor woman though. What I can't understand is that the woman opened the door and the man said her husband's name. She went upstairs to her husband and he came down and the guy at the door gave him an envelope with the name PAUL on it. So the husband came upstairs and said the envelope was empty. What I can't understand is why he opened the front door again. Can you help? Wouldn't he just think I don't know what that's about and stay in the house?
HardRockOwl · 03/04/2022 23:22

@HollowTalk ah now I do have a small theory on this. And it's just that - small!

But we only have her word for it there was an envelope. Her word for it that he came into the house again and they spoke about it. So was there an envelope?

But hand on hand with my theory (which contradicts it) is that the police clearly have more info that's not been released to the public and Veronica will be privy to this info of course.

So it could be that things don't entirely make sense because bits and pieces are not being made public

But the police have the envelope! They weren't released to the public but it was described as the sort of envelope you'd have a birthday card in. It was about A5 or A6 size I think. Were you under the impression that his wife said that the guy took the envelope with him?

NauseousNancy · 03/04/2022 23:24

I love Redhanded - true crime, British. Loads (years) of episodes to catch up on!

HollowTalk · 03/04/2022 23:25

I couldn't understand how she stayed in the same house. That would just be impossible for me.

Pawtriarchal · 03/04/2022 23:27

@TheYearOfSmallThings

Did anyone else get irritated listening to Sweet Bobby? The podcast kept stressing that it is entirely normal to be in a relationship with someone you have never seen or spoken to, whereas I felt throughout that no, it isn't. And no, it couldn't happen to anybody, and not looking at what was going on with the victim meant only half the story was told.
Yes, it was a bit weird. The length the ‘relationship’ went on for too 🤷‍♀️
HardRockOwl · 03/04/2022 23:28

@HollowTalk they don't have it. Just a replica of it as described by Veronica . So... did it even exist?

And how she stayed there I don't know. It's almost as if she knew she was safe to do so.

But that's conspiracy theorising I suppose!

It's a fascinating and puzzling mystery and I genuinely hope it's solved for the sake of his family

I would also recommend 'Paradise' on BBC sounds. A real eye-witness account.

The Trillion Dollar Conman. Loved it. And on the off-chance you haven’t listened to the Missing Cryptoqueen, that’s an absolute must.

ToothGrinder · 03/04/2022 23:30

Agree that there was a lot missing from Sweet Bobby. And it just kind of fizzled out.

OP the best podcast I've ever heard is that BBC one about Anna Delvey. It's awesome, a billion times better than the Netflix series, really very well done. It goes into detail on the bits you want to know about and tells you enough about the rest to keep it sharp and interesting without getting bogged down in technical detail. It really is a rollercoaster ride. And the sound quality is excellent which is one thing that's currently really bugging me about The Missing - it's not as bad as other US podcasts but please, people, use your mikes and fix them up properly! I really hate that echoey grating speaking into a laptop sound of the pandemic vibe that a lot of them have.

LemonLymanDotCom · 03/04/2022 23:30

Another recommend for the latest Serial, the Trojan Horse Affair. Riveting & illuminating.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 03/04/2022 23:31

Bad Women- The Ripper Retold (Spotify)

Focuses on the victims and their lives, and the circumstances that led them to Whitechapel. Dispels a lot of myths- hosted by Hallie Rubenhold, who wrote the book The Five. Really gripping.

There’s also Mens Rea, also on Spotify. The crimes are Irish so you might not have heard of them, but the legal system is quite similar to the U.K. so it’s not as hard to wrap your head around all the different terms etc like with a US story. The first episode is about Elaine O’Hara, and you’ll be punching the air when they get the fucker, purely through the curiosity of a young gardai.

ToothGrinder · 03/04/2022 23:38

Oops sorry I was getting my podcasts mixed up. Blush The Missing is great. There's another similar one from the US that has the bad sound. Blush

The Anna Delvey one is honestly really good though!

notacooldad · 03/04/2022 23:39

The nobody zone.
Booby trap- the Miami chronicles
The drop out - about Elizabeth Holmes’s.
Hunting Warhead a tough topic but amazing work .
West cork
I love swindled. The delivery is very monotone but very good.
Extraordinary stories is fabulous. I love Barry’s way of telling a tale. Some crime , some truly bizarre true stories.
Ghost gate road
Down the hill- the Delphi murders.

NoSquirrels · 03/04/2022 23:41

@HardRockOwl

Oh. My.

In that case listen to series one immediately.

It’s basically the gold standard true crime podcast that spawned the others.

toddlermom · 03/04/2022 23:48

West Cork!!! About a real life unsolved murder. Way better than either of the tv shows about the same thing!!

ZeppelinTits · 04/04/2022 00:25

West Cork is really good, when I visited Ireland the locals in another bit of southern Ireland all seemed confident they knew who had done it and it wasn't who I'd have assumed. Worth getting a tree trial of Audible just to listen to it.

The first series of Serial is AMAZING. There has been a development in the news in the past few weeks about that case as well so it's still rumbling on. Absolutely gripping and fascinating and I need to re-listen to it again (when it isn't night time so I don't get scared on my own...)

Wait - they don’t think it’s the guy that France put on trial?
TheAbbotOfUnreason · 04/04/2022 05:31

Paradise
Who Killed Emma
Death in Ice Valley
Body on the Moor
The Strange Death of Innes Ewart

Uncanny
The Battersea Poltergeist
The Lovecraft Investigations

I’ve also worked my way through Mark Steel’s In Town and all of the You’re Dead to Me podcasts.

All on BBC Sounds.

ChipsAreLife · 04/04/2022 05:41

Loads I like have already been mentioned but ...

catching Melanie's killer is gripping and British. The same reporter did no strings attached which was good too.

It's American but the second season of 'in the dark' is the best podcast I've ever listened too. If you've not listened I would highly recommend it.

hattie43 · 04/04/2022 05:55

Who killed Emma
Paradise
I'll be gone in the dark
West cork

Totally agree with you about the American guy , he slow drawl is dreadful

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 07:39

Is Serial the one which starts with a high school where a girl goes missing? If so, I know of it. Is it true then? For some reason I thought it was a story?

OP posts:
Simplelobsterhat · 04/04/2022 07:49

Not exactly gripping as you'll probably know the main events of the stories but I really enjoy British Scandal with matt Ford and Alice levine. You find out loads more details about stories you've probably heard of eg lord lucan, the guy that faked his death on a canoe, etc but in quite a conversational way.

Second the Battersea poltergeist recommendations. Not true crime but really well done.

Going to check out some of the others mentioned here thanks
