Can anyone recommend me a gripping podcast?

Preferably British and preferably true crime

I've whipped through all seasons of The Missing and really found that interesting. Was less interested in Fairy Meadow and I don't really like American OTT hosting styles

I've listed to a few UK true crime podcasts with Adam and they're ok but a bit .. dull. Think it's the narration style

Any recommendations please

The Teacher's Pet is excellent.

I also love S-Town and listen to it all the way through at least once a year.

But hang on, how are you listening to podcasts while swimming???? I need to know!

BastardtheCat · 04/04/2022 15:41

@HardRockOwl

Oh and 'the doorstep murder' is excellent. I recommend that
Marking for info but also to say "What?! While you SWIM?! HOW?" Please tell me about this witchcraft!

Really surprised it’s not been mentioned, possibly because it’s BBC (but I think Paradise is too?) but Shreds: Murder in the Dock is absolutely brilliant.

MyBottleOfRibena · 04/04/2022 16:47

@ImInStealthMode

Australian rather than British but I love Casefile. Sole host, very soothing voice and very detailed about cases. It's mostly one case per episode although there are a few with several parts (notably the Belanglo Backpackers case).

I get what you mean about the sensationalism of some American podcasts. We listen to Morbid and Crime Junkie and they can be over the top, but then I find the same thing sometimes with RedHanded which is British, they're a bit full of their own self-importance at times.

Mens Rea and They Walk Amongst Us are both sole-host too, so no dramatics or tangents.

The case file coverage of east area rapist/original night stalker was fantastic. Also Silk Road

Another vote for Bad Women, The Ripper Retold. Fascinating and brings Victorian Whitechapel to life. Those women had very hard lives.

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 17:39

@BastardtheCat ha ha do you mean how do I listen as I swim?

Well. When you think of swimming, you're probably thinking of someone actually sportily powering up and down. I do breaststroke for up to an hour until I've done 1200 metres or burnt the calories I want to burn. It's also a pool where only 3 people at once can be in it . So I put my phone on a sun bed thing by the pool, pop in my AirPods (I have the splash proof ones) and so far, so good 😬

You can get earbuds specifically designed for swimming - my DS had the bone conducting ones for when he was doing the long slogging sets.

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 19:23

@TheAbbotOfUnreason I've tried them all (well, a lot of them!) and hate them. Airpods work for me as the most sedate swimmer ever

British Scandal is good

crummyusername · 04/04/2022 19:29

British Scandal is the back story to big stories like the Maxwells, major Charles ingram, Sex Pistols… I knew of all the stories but only in a vague way, but the details were gripping. The style slightly annoyed at first but I came to like it (mix of telling the story and banter between the presenters).

Mybobowler · 04/04/2022 19:29

Loving these recommendations! Loved Sweet Bobby, Uncanny and the Battersea Poltergeist.

Not a series as such, but Red Handed is a very good true crime podcast, and there are hundreds of episodes to catch up on if you enjoy it!

ZeppelinTits · 04/04/2022 19:33

@Pawtriarchal - that's right, they are seemingly confident that it wasn't him and was someone else who is mentioned in the podcast. I was surprised too!

IWasFunBeforeMum · 04/04/2022 19:34

Fairy meadow on BBC Sounds.

orangeisthenewpuce · 04/04/2022 19:40

@TheYearOfSmallThings

Did anyone else get irritated listening to Sweet Bobby? The podcast kept stressing that it is entirely normal to be in a relationship with someone you have never seen or spoken to, whereas I felt throughout that no, it isn't. And no, it couldn't happen to anybody, and not looking at what was going on with the victim meant only half the story was told.
I was irritated at the ending. Too many loose ends for me

Dirty John was the first one I ever listened to. It had me hooked from the first episode. Listen if you haven't already OP.

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 20:01

@IWasFunBeforeMum I didn't like that much. Just such a dull delivery

@aiskabash

I recommend:

The Teacher’s Pet - Australian
Little Lost Girls - Australian
S Town

Have you listed to The Lady Vanishes if you like Teacher’s Pet?
IggysPop · 04/04/2022 20:08

Loved (as already mentioned)

Battersea Poltergeist
Uncanny
Lovecraft Investigates

FiveForAPound · 04/04/2022 20:13

@HardRockOwl

This is a great thread. Could you ask MNHQ to move it out of chat so it doesn't disappear? Thanks

HardRockOwl · 04/04/2022 20:20

@FiveForAPound there's some great suggestions isn't there? And I've only listened to ..

The doorstep murder (very good)
The Missing (excellent)
Fairy Meadow (I was bored)
UK True Crime, few episodes (bit dull)

I'll drop them a line
