@Goldenbear

If you work in the government and part of your job is to track such flights you are not going to be basing your information on Flight Radar!
Exactly!

I suspect you’d be quite surprised at which organizations and agencies (some of them government) do use Flight radar or similar tracker apps/technology to get at least a quick snapshot of what civilian traffic is in the air over parts of the world where they don’t have their own assets.
Igotjelly · 17/03/2022 15:42

Got to say even the Daily Mail haven’t picked up on the doomsday plane and they love stories about it!

Igotjelly · 17/03/2022 15:44

I think it’s a good indicator that we aren’t facing imminent nuclear apocalypse the fact that Biden is quite clearly still going about his day in the White House as normal. He hasn’t been hustled away to a bunker - currently speaking to the Irish PM.

That’s nicely patronizing about spotters, well done…

I’ll fess up - I started as a spotter but that led to forty plus years in both military flying and civilian flying…

What is chinas position?
I've read so much over the past couple of days I can't remember who's doing what anymore!

MagicFox · 17/03/2022 15:50

@purpleboy we don't know yet

I’m not sure anyone really knows 100%. There are rumours that they have already agreed to providing economic support to Russia but that they won’t stretch to military support. Other commentators suggest they might end up supplying military equipment. Guess we might know more after Biden and Xi meet tomorrow.
purpleboy · 17/03/2022 15:51

Ok, thank you both.

baroqueandblue · 17/03/2022 15:52

@purpleboy China is talking to US tomorrow. Something on the last thread indicated their possible displeasure with Putin's invasion, but I didn't follow the link.

I don't think anyone quite knows what China is doing at the moment. The US said it had intelligence that China was preparing to assist Russia, but as far as I know, it hasn't actually extended that help (not publicly anyway.) As RTB pointed out right at the end of the last thread, flight radar suggests that Lavrov's plane turned round and headed back to Moscow on its way to Beijing.

Thank you. I found it interesting/upsetting to hear a Russian man say he was supporting the military operation because NATO has nuclear weapons in Ukraine. We’re told exactly the same about Russia, I’m sure the truth is somewhere in the middle and most ordinary folk in every country want peace and stability for their family.

DrBlackbird · 17/03/2022 16:08

Another way to relax/take a step back is to read what’s trending on AIBU on MN… kind of reassuring that what you might find there as the concerns and issues posted about now are not so dissimilar to what others have always posted about… like life carrying on.

Igotjelly · 17/03/2022 16:08

Guardian reporting that lawyers are currently drafting a ‘peace deal’. Will be interesting to see where it lands. Once things start going on paper it’s a good sign that the overall ballpark aims are there or there abouts, negotiators will then go through it literally line by line to agree working that both sides find acceptable. Big question seems to be around Ukraine’s perfectly reasonable red line of wanting an immediate ceasefire.

Archersandlemonade · 17/03/2022 16:11

Please can I ask a question. ? Apologies if it’s been answered or self explanatory but...
Just read an article on sky news where there reporter is in Russia and a resident said - we had to invade Ukraine as they were building nuclear weapons”. Do Russia not have nuclear weapons? How is it ok for them to have them and not Ukraine?
Apologies if I sound i sound ignorant

I thought the various planes returning to Moscow were a fairly good sign. Even if they are merely dropping someone of, why fly back to Moscow if the end of the world is nigh? Why send a bunch of planes to iran where you don't have bunkers if the end of the world is nigh? Just leave the plane where you land!

Then theres the Lavrov plane and another plane which uturned and didn't reach their destination. Again not really saying 'end of the world nigh' though. But this really is highly unusual. And worth noting. How many flights simply go sightseeing and return to the same destination?

Its either abject chaos going on or trying to bluff the west. (or both).

Nothing seems like Putin is anywhere near in control of the situation. Certainly not that he wants the Russian public to see.

Think. Why might the presidental plane go anywhere under these circumstances? Who is on it (must be important) and why?

Note: If Putin isn't on it, he's not got his plane to take him to a special bunker in the interim, so he's not expecting the end of the world if he sends it off somewhere for another purpose.

If he is on it, why leave Moscow at such a crucial moment? Thats the centre of power and where he has most influence. What is so urgently demanding of his attention that he has to leave the Kremlin personally? But nothing else is really saying 'end of the world is nigh' he has to leave. Its not consistent.

Again remember his covid paranoia. A photo shoot? Not likely - too much of an assassination risk. Meeting someone? Why does Putin go and not the other way around, with someone come to him?

The biggest conclusion is that things are getting increasingly irratic.

The threats and rhetoric are signs of that same thing.

Doesn't mean nukes. Does mean clearly things are going way intended and planned.

You mean like when the UK and US invaded Iraq…..?
bluetoile · 17/03/2022 16:15

Of course we should be free to share any information/analysis, but some on here seem to take real enjoyment in stoking fears, it's cruel and unnecessary.

Igotjelly · 17/03/2022 16:17

@RedToothBrush I read somewhere, might have been this thread, that Lavrov returning to Moscow might be a sign of China getting increasingly pissed off at Russia - think there is any credence in that?

Agree though that it seems to be a bit of a shit show inside The Kremlin!
