Did I manage to be at the start of a thread? They move so quickly!

RedToothBrush · 09/03/2022 15:48

Natasha Clark @natashac
Business Sec told Britain facing "a crisis in energy bigger than the shock of the 1970s"

Says energy plan coming "in the next few days"

Sounds fun.

Looks like we are all going back in time 40 years.

I'm not remotely on top of reading these threads but I'm bloody glad they're there, I'm bloody glad of mumsnet, and of women who understand and can explain and articulate stuff better than I do, and just of women altogether.

War not so much. Feel like we're watching so much progress being undone by a madman.
Thank you for the threads, all of you.

100% the energy crisis is just spiralling atm. never did I think I would start a savings pot to cover my energy bills!

Just a plug for two subreddits that have a lot of good information

www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/

www.reddit.com/r/UkrainianConflict/

The first one has a lot of good commentary from armed forces members and combat veterans.

Thanks for the new thread.

Indeed, so many years backwards, throwing it all in the rubbish just for an idiot, and those other idiots around him.

What do you think this means? More government funding? Nationalised energy supply? Planned brown-outs?

Sad pmk.

Relieved slightly in the reports that Chernobyl isn’t in immediate danger, one scarce bit of good news.

But absolutely horrendous the news about the maternity hospitalSad

RedToothBrush · 09/03/2022 15:58

Scott Bixby @scottbix
“The mother has a visa and the older child has a visa, but the youngest does not have a visa… They’re running into brick walls.”

Pressure is growing on Biden to lift restrictions blocking Ukrainian refugees from finding safety in the U.S.^

My latest:
www.thedailybeast.com/babies-without-us-visas-leave-ukrainian-families-facing-brutal-choices
Babies Without U.S. Visas Leave Ukrainian Families Facing Brutal Choices

Now, Republicans and Democrats alike, as well as refugee advocates and community leaders, are calling on the administration to be clearer in its plans to more clearly address the looming refugee crisis in Europe

Well i guess the uk is leading the world then.

MushMonster · 09/03/2022 15:59

What happened in the maternity hospital? Did they bomb one?

elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 15:59

I don't understand the maternity hospital and why it was active. From my understanding all hospitals had moved underground so why in the middle of a war zone would you leave it up!

I'm angry about it but also perplexed. I was so sure that they had said all hospitals had moved underground!

Jonathan Reilly @thejonnyreilly
NEW: Western officals have "serious concerns" Russia could use "non convential" e.g chemical weapons in Ukraine.

They warn that Russia is "tightening the noose" on Kyiv and warns it will be "utterly horrific" when forces do move on the capital.

I've seen pictures today of people hiding in the Kyiv underground saying they think they are safe.

I'm not convinced.

Russian military tactics involve bombing hospitals to maximise horror, destruction and fear.

EezyOozy · 09/03/2022 16:06

.

EsmaCannonball · 09/03/2022 16:07

You can't just pack up and leave a hospital or move it entirely underground when you are trapped in a siege. The White Helmets warned that targeting hospitals would be the Russians' next move. They attack, the wounded are taken to hospitals and then they attack the first responders and the hospitals.

HereComesSpringAgain · 09/03/2022 16:08

They are not necessarily safe underground though

The Russians know that's where they've gone so can bomb from above to cause collapse

elephantmarchingin · 09/03/2022 16:11

The video that was tweeted looks like it was emptyish so hopefully limits the damage done to human lives.

Seems I guess I'm just cynical as this strengthens the argument for a no fly zone

Tuba437 · 09/03/2022 16:13

I was expecting something horrific today for the Russians to use as leverage in negotiations tomorrow.

Christo Grozev @christogrozev
Last night, on @pevchikh and @Kira_Yarmysh's talk show I pledged my reputation insisting that Putin lies when he says Russia did not send conscripted soldiers to fight in Ukraine.
It appears Putin now acknowledged he was "misled". Maybe we should inform him of other things too?

Looks like the all powerful Head of State was utterly unaware of his subordinates abhorrent decision to send conscripts to Ukraine, despite his express ordered yeah right

Now the All Power has to find a suitable scapegoat punish these offenders.

@elephantmarchingin they have pooh poohed the polish jets due to expected escalation. A no fly zone would be more escalators than that so really can't see the no fly zone going ahead.

borntobequiet · 09/03/2022 16:16

I heard on the BBC News Channel this lunchtime that humanitarian corridors would be open today for people to leave Kyiv and other northern cities. However it’s not on the BBC website as far as I can see.
Anyway, my first thought was that this might be preparatory to a full scale assault with bombs and artillery, to flatten the places. I hope not.
