Anyone else planning incase they need to leave London?

So we didn't think Putin would invade Ukraine. He has. Didn't think he would bomb schools and hospitals and houses. He has.

I know the NATO etc countries are trying for it not to develop into a bigger war.

However what if it does. Surely London would be on the target list? We have camping stuff, am thinking of getting it together so we can get away from London.

Is anyone else?

Just read that Putin has a daughter who lives in St Georges Hill, Weybridge, which is the next village to us.

Bromse · 04/03/2022 15:00

No. Why would I leave London? I don't live in the centre but on the outskirts and like it. There's no point in panicking about something which probably won't happen.

shortshape · 04/03/2022 15:05

I've told DH that we should fly to the US if Biden recommends US citizens leave London (DH and DCs have citizenship and PILs are there). US and UK citizens were told to leave Ukraine before the invasion so I think they'd have the intelligence. But that's as far as we've got regarding planning, we know where our passports are and that's the main thing. Until there's any specific government advice though, we're just carrying on as usual.

AirDriedT · 04/03/2022 15:08

I'm eyeing up my 5m bell tent gathering dust in the spare room. Not sure I could make a quick exit with it. Damn, should have bought the smaller nylon one.

Where would you go with your camping kit OP?

TarcasticSwat · 04/03/2022 15:10

@DiamondBright

We're off grid so I've ordered some extra gas, that's exactly as much as I did to prep for Covid and Brexit as well.
Off grid? But on MN?...interesting! 🤔
LampLighter414 · 04/03/2022 15:22

A couple of my friends have vacated to their holiday homes in Cornwall, they figure it is at very low risk of being targeted and pretty far from London!

Lollypop701 · 04/03/2022 15:26

‘I won't be fighting gangs for food supplies in the Home Counties then wondering how to cook rats with no water electricity or access to google.’

No Google means no recipes for rat a la orange, rat in garlic with croutons etc… true nightmare 🙈

Also if we are going to be nuked can someone tell me now, as I’ll put my heating on … and the lights. Can’t take it with me and all that!

Abra1d1 · 04/03/2022 15:31

Fill your boots and use the tumble dryer too.

EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 04/03/2022 15:32

I’m glad I’m not the only one filled with mirth at the dawning realisation that the worst thing about the nuclear apocalypse is having to “freestyle” your rat and not follow a bbc good food recipe.

GallopingHighRoad · 04/03/2022 15:40

I believe the probability of a full blown nuclear war is very low. Even if an aggressor took that path it would be on the basis of first strike and a win. In that case military and infrastructure targets would make most sense. The targets would be Portsmouth, Faslane, RAF bases and Salisbury Plain. I would prefer to be in London - that would be the jewel.

youhadmeatjello · 04/03/2022 15:48

I’m not sure camping gear will do much for you in a post nuclear world, OP. Lots of threads like this. They were sending my anxiety sky rocketing but now I’m realising how ridiculous they are. Don’t get me wrong, I’m anxious, but these are like the threads that caused panic buying during lockdown (not that mumsnet was solely responsible for that!). Who does it help?

People keep saying half of London is Russian owned - it might not be for much longer once the sanctions kick in!

youhadmeatjello · 04/03/2022 15:49

@LampLighter414 really?!

FindingMeno · 04/03/2022 15:55

I'm scared of being in the blast or fireball zone ((and not about to try and find out) but immediate vaporisation worries me far less.
I think people think it's bright flash and all over, or radiation sickness and nuclear winter.

Lollypop701 · 04/03/2022 16:04

Is there a lighthearted thread on what we would do if the world is coming to an end? Heating/dryer/putting your tent up in garden and having a festival with the last of your cider and rat on the bbq?

Lollypop701 · 04/03/2022 16:04

How many will one mumsnet rat feed?

CallyfromBlakes7 · 04/03/2022 16:05

@Mindymomo

Just read that Putin has a daughter who lives in St Georges Hill, Weybridge, which is the next village to us.
So if she suddenly moves to New Zealand, we know there are nukes coming.
CallyfromBlakes7 · 04/03/2022 16:07

I think people think it's bright flash and all over, or radiation sickness and nuclear winter

well that kind of is the case

Although there is an inbetween where you might be horribly burnt. In Berkshire, perhaps. Depending on the size of the warhead. When you look at the website which tell you how far the blast would reach it's quite astonishing how small the bombs on Japan were compared with the firepower now.

CallyfromBlakes7 · 04/03/2022 16:09

I don't think there would be any point bombing Faslane because the nuclear subs are generally elsewhere.

DoobryWhatsit · 04/03/2022 16:15

Don't the Russians own most of London anyway?

Abra1d1 · 04/03/2022 16:18

YABVU. No need to go into a nuclear holocaust letting your family overeat. 🥺

Are they older @LampLighter414 as people with kids at school or jobs they have to do in person couldn't relocate on a whim in termtime?

How long are they intending on staying there?

LampLighter414 · 04/03/2022 16:24
@LampLighter414 really?!
Yes really, they work from home mostly anyway and are pushing back on going into the office for now - not sure what excuses they are using.

1Wanda1 · 04/03/2022 16:39

@Abra1d1 "Optimism? I think what was meant was that nuclear bombs would be used immediately"

I don't think Putin will find his Generals willing to use nuclear weapons. This is one man's war, one in which he lacks support in his own country.

marieantoinehairnet · 04/03/2022 16:42

Getting up the A2 is bad on an average day, I'd rather die in my own home by the drinks cabinet than in a traffic jam on the A2
