It was a hit in 1971, but they were a great group who had this one hit that I have never heard on the radio since, so it meets most of your criteria and is amazingly good.

I remember my Grandad singing it to my Grannie when I was a kid. I could cry every time I hear it.

He the first bit, me the echo then we'd change over next chorus. Sigh. Might try and find him on FB, see if he's still a hunk.
