Is anyone else monitoring the air traffic on FlightRadar24? There was an 8 minute wait to get on to the website!

Lots of military aircraft.

There’s a secret squirrel plane over Lincolnshire at the moment. Seems to have started in Poland but no details.

I'm amazed that app is available on line in a dangerous and fragile time.

My dad's a total flight radar geek, he'll be on with you, I had no idea it was so detailed.

I hope these flights all land safe.

ipswichwitch · 24/02/2022 20:05

Just getting to grips with the app and seen it was an apache - the call sign amused me! I’ve seen worse looking choppers……

littlerebellion · 24/02/2022 20:11

Anyone want to take a moment to remember the MNer who saw a large bird of prey circling her garden and immediately opened FlightRadar to try and identity it Grin

littlerebellion · 24/02/2022 20:11

*identify ffs

Yes, but it will only show the ones it's ok for us (and them) to see.

Eyeofthenorm · 24/02/2022 20:18

Ive heard loads of planes. Can't be bothered with actually logging on to flight radar but following you lot!

Eyeofthenorm · 24/02/2022 20:21

Not just planes either, heavy helicopterage.

So, there are even more up there that are stealth?

Aside from the stealth bomber, that is.

Jeeeeeezo. Remember when we were all in a tizzy about loo roll shortage? I miss those days.

etulosba · 24/02/2022 20:36

So, there are even more up there that are stealth?

In order for us to see them, military or civil, they have to turn a transponder on that reveals the details of the aircraft, speed, altitude and locations etc. Not all aircraft do. Certainly not military ones.

As has been said mentioned by pp Flight radar and the other tracker apps don’t actually use radar in it’s traditional sense.

Aircraft operating in most airspace these days send their flight data (altitude, position and lots of other stuff) to air traffic control via a continuously transmitting radio link (datalink). The trackers eavesdrop on that datalink info to produce the picture you see via the internet.

If aircraft are in a situation where they don’t to advertise their position the datalink on the aircraft can simply be turned off.

Thank you all. I feel ready to be an air traffic controller now, I've learned so much from this thread.

That happens a lot with the fighters off the UK(speculation follows)
  1. It might be that the aircraft has gone to low level and is it’s signal is not being detected by the tracker’s receivers, or
  1. OTOH it might an example of the datalink being turned off once the fighter has got clear of an are shared with civil traffic, is into it’s training area , and it no longer wants people watching what it is up to.

This thread is really interesting, I used the website earlier to track DH's flight and had to queue to get on it!
