Anyone else? We are in the SW. Meant to be pretty windy tomorrow..

Mid Devon here and no notice of any closure yet. I'll be a bit peeved if they do, we live next door! (OK, I know the teachers might not get in).

Player456 · 17/02/2022 16:59

Bucks here. DD's school is closed (online instead) tomorrow, due to students travelling a long distance from rural areas and buses not sure if they can run. Amber area here, but are wind gusts are predicted to be the same as in the red area.

Ilovetommycat · 17/02/2022 16:59

Most of South Wales schools closed although my local authority has not made any announcement.

Somerset and Dorset all schools closed (I’m on the border). Online learning but only if we have electricity and internet. Dh works from home but part of civil contingency so dc will fend for themselves. I’ll be at work as I’m in a hospital. Not sure how many staff we’ll have but on the plus side, people will likely stay home and not come to ED.

ShrillSiren · 17/02/2022 17:01

Closed in the Vale of Glamorgan.

BlondeWidow · 17/02/2022 17:02

@gogohm

They are putting our sea defences up currently, local Facebook group is live-streaming the council staff struggling to remember how they go up (quite amusing)

Half term here too, what an awful week for it.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 17/02/2022 17:07

South Warks. The high school sent an email saying we'll be told by 7:30am if open or closed (a large amount of pupils a bussed in along rural routes, dc1 included), primary open as normal.

ancientgran · 17/02/2022 17:08

Had an email from Head, school is open (Devon) but parents to make their own decision.

Thatsplentyjack · 17/02/2022 17:08

We're in the West of Scotland and they NEVER shit schools. My kids go to the same schools me and my brother went to and I can recall one time they had to shut the primary because there was no water.
Best bit is, the schools and nursery are at the top of a very steep him and there always loads of cars getting stuck, slipping around, pulling into the streets that go off the main hill and abandoning cars 🤣 going to be a fun morning.

BrizzleWest · 17/02/2022 17:08

Schools closed here in Bristol

littlemissminor · 17/02/2022 17:08

South Glos and we are closed!

DaffodilDandilion · 17/02/2022 17:09

North east wales is closed

evilharpy · 17/02/2022 17:10

Ours is planning to open but not use any of the mobile classrooms, and will let us know by 8am if the plans change.

BlondeWidow · 17/02/2022 17:12

Still beautifully clear here. How bizarre!

We have not been told it's off but going by the weather warning and the weather forecast I can't see my son going to school.

ZittiEBuoni · 17/02/2022 17:18

Both dc schools are closing and apparently this means they can invite all their friends round tomorrow! Not sure if that's really in the spirit of things...Grin

MajorCarolDanvers · 17/02/2022 17:20

We are already on half term (3 days) so it just means the kids are stuck in the house.

evilharpy · 17/02/2022 17:21

I've just looked at the weather forecast, it says 76mph wind at 8am here. The strongest wind I can remember was when we were on a Stena sailing, Holyhead to Dublin, which was about 45mph. We nearly lost the car door when we popped into Morrisons at Holyhead, and the crossing itself was hell on earth. We were all sick as dogs and I am never EVER sick. It calmed down a lot about an hour in, thankfully, but I said I'd never again get on a boat if the wind was that strong.

I can't even imagine 76mph but I don't even fancy doing the five minute walk to school and dodging flying branches and bins.

Calmdown14 · 17/02/2022 17:22

Having experienced a couple of these in North Scotland in last few months it's wise.
Easier planned in advance than the email in the morning and opening would be delayed regardless as they need to be inspected.
The falling trees closed just about every road. Once they start it is like dominoes.
Take it seriously. Lots of people were stranded thinking they could still travel so unless it is essential, stay put.
Make sure trampolines are well secured, take down the netting if you can (trampoline graveyard here). If you have glass topped patio furniture turn it over. Lie down bins, birdhouses, anything likely to topple and cause damage.
Have devices charged, download some netflix, have candles and blankets ready. We were off power for days

MrsDThomas · 17/02/2022 17:24

Closed in north Wales. TBH im not expecting the storm they are predicting. Living in snowdonia (on a mountain side) im used to wind. We’ve had strong winds before and they 3 called after anyone.

BoredZelda · 17/02/2022 17:26

Just saw there's a red weather warning in a small part of England. Don't think we've ever closed schools for a red wind warning, hope things aren't too bad.

One of the aspects of a red warning is no unnecessary travel, this includes the school run so they do close schools. They closed ours at lunch time a few years back with the beast from the east. People whined about it but when the weather hit at about 2.30, it made total sense they had closed.

BoredZelda · 17/02/2022 17:28

They said the same in the North East of Scotland. The last two storms (which I’m not sure hit red) cause pd massive disruption with many homes without power, some for a couple of weeks.

Blossomtoes · 17/02/2022 17:28

It’s half term here.

Calmdown14 · 17/02/2022 17:29

This is what a red wind warning can do
