Just coming back to update - school now moved to remote learning. Thank goodness as I was going to keep them off.

Stay safe everyone.

Well it morning. Seen on the news that Capel Curig has the top gusts. Unsure where their weather station is but it really isnt that windy. Im not that far from the place.

Recycling it about as i can see them down the lane. Ive just put mine out! Council has advised us to do so

INeedNewShoes · 18/02/2022 08:11

DD’s school has closed. Apparently Buckinghamshire have taken the decision to close all schools today.

Doing the school run now. Looks like all schools in the area are open. It's a bit windy but nothing out of the ordinary. Sky is blue, sun is out. Walking down the main road, lots of cars about and buses are running.

HelenaJustina · 18/02/2022 08:35

Buckinghamshire has ‘advised’ schools to close, not all have done so Hmm
All of our local schools in Oxfordshire have closed so we have too. It was the tip from amber to red which clinched it for us.

Tigersonvaseline · 18/02/2022 09:08

Took their time but our school s have closed

Tigersonvaseline · 18/02/2022 09:09

That's lucky for you Wax.
Let's hope your area avoids the worst.

Weather app was saying 70mph winds at midday but it's changed to 50 so hopefully won't be too bad. Derbyshire is about as far inland as you can get in the UK so we usually escape the most extreme weather. Gone cloudy again now though.

Well my garden looks like the local tip, a small shed has turned over and my garden is strewn with lawnmower and gardening stuff plus branches and what looks like some rubbish that has blown in, bin day today so I guess some have turned over. I'm not going to try sorting it until the wind dies down.

School still open. To get GS to school I have to drive along a road with the sea on one side and a common on the other, I wouldn't let him walk today as I've seen people getting blown off their feet along there in the past and I don't want to drive it so I've rung school and said as police are saying essential journeys only he is not in today. The absence line was busy the first couple of times I tried. Lots of kids come in by train and as there are no trains south of Exeter I can't imagine there will be many in.

Perfect nonsense that schools are closed. If we have a flutter of snow they close the schools

Have you seen the damage the storm has caused? I suspect you are being goady as no one in their right mind would want to risk children being blown off their feet or hit by debris.
Juststopamoment · 18/02/2022 18:06

It was very windy in London. I was nearly swept off my feet and there were wheelie bins and shed roofs falling about. Was quite scary. I wouldn’t want my kids in school. We are on half term though.

DS's school was open, they never close for anything 😂
Foolsrule · 18/02/2022 18:56

School open here, well, two were. The other two (across the road) chose to close. No need to close IMO. Very little wind damage, luckily! Some definitely used it as an excuse.

teraculum29 · 18/02/2022 19:14

My daughter was closed, but only because it was Inset day before the half term.
Schools in Dorset were told to close.

They definitely did use it as an excuse, I'm in Derbyshire and they weren't told to close but apparently a couple in the area did anyway. We were an amber area but it really wasn't that bad, I didn't see any major damage on the school run, a few bins blown over but that's it. I understand schools closing in badly affected areas but there wasn't the need here.
IWishIHadNotDoneIt · 18/02/2022 19:50

It's half term in SE

kittensinthekitchen · 18/02/2022 19:58

@Waxonwaxoff0

So you want them to go back in time and change the warning?

Or should they have just leapt ahead of time yesterday to check whether the best prediction that could be made was accurate?

Most schools in the area stayed open. A couple closed, so they went against the majority. Common sense would have told you that since we were not in a red area, no council advice to close and the majority of schools being open, closing wasn't really necessary here.

LovelyIssues · 18/02/2022 20:34

Bucks here. Schools didnt close and half term next week.

Tigersonvaseline · 18/02/2022 21:23

It's better to err on the side of caution.

It's easy to say no reason too close When nothing happens

If there's a good reason to, yes. In my area the weather wasn't predicted to be too bad, hence why councils did not advise school closures. They would have done so if there were major concerns.
