Meadowblossom, the risk of kids blowing over in the playground was also high - it happened to DH Grin.

curlymom · 17/02/2022 22:49

@Benjispruce5

Had no idea there was so much variation in half terms in England .Thought it was only private schools that had different holidays.
No it’s a bit weird. East and West Sussex are neighbouring and have different half terms.
Clawdy · 17/02/2022 22:55

Stockport half term this week, Manchester next week. So close to other too.

The last storm like this was 1987. I can remember it. They closed schools as the risk of school buses blowing over was too high.

@Meadowblossom

What do you mean the last storm like this? A red weather warning? We had one at the end of last year Confused

Player456 · 17/02/2022 23:29

@BigRedDuck waves back Grin

Quite a few of Bucks schools (mainly in the Aylesbury area) are now closed tomorrow.

No they didn't!

That was the storm when the BBC (Michael Fish) famously told us not to worry there wasn't a hurricane on the way! Definitely no weather warnings!!

But wins of over 80mph, gusting 134.

Perhap you're thinking if the one in 1990 - which seems to be the one that broadcaster mean when they say 'worst in 30 tears' ?

Marzipanfruit · 17/02/2022 23:36

@RancidOldHag
Think you may be all just thinking about England......

RancidOldHag · 17/02/2022 23:38

Here is info on the 1990 storm in case anyone is interested. Wiki notes it as an example of the forecasters getting the predictions right

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burns%27_Day_Storm

It was pribabkyma less severe storm that 1987 (when many anemometers broke, so wind speeds not fully recorded)

But impact was worse because it happened during the day with more people out and about.

IIRC 1987 saw more trees fallen though, because many were still in leaf. (Also the weaker trees fell then, meaning only the stronger ones there in 90)

kittensinthekitchen · 17/02/2022 23:40

What?

We had red weather warnings in November last year

Why would I be lying about that? Confused

Marzipanfruit · 17/02/2022 23:40

We have only just had storms Malik and Corrie.....

kittensinthekitchen · 17/02/2022 23:41

Or if not lying, why would I be mixing up 2021 with 1990?

Confused
ZittiEBuoni · 17/02/2022 23:44

I was in Bristol for the 1987 storm and it just didn't really happen there.

1990 though, whoa! Tiles off the roof all down the road and lots of plate glass windows blown out on Gloucester Road.

That's definitely the one I remember.

RancidOldHag · 17/02/2022 23:44

That was the national weather forecast after the main BBC news, not a regional one. There were no weather warnings

But I suppose it's a fair point as the major 1987 storm affected Greater London, the Home Counties, south coast and East Anglia. So it was an English event as far as UK was concerned.

It did also hit Brittany and some other areas in northern France, and I don't think whether they had weather warnings made the news here - even the impact of the storm there was barely mentioned in the British coverage

Yes, we did - storm Arwen

inews.co.uk/news/red-weather-warning-when-last-uk-what-happened-met-office-alert-storm-arwen-explained-1467104

and before that it was 2018

But the storms of 1987 and 1990 were much stronger.

1987 famously had no weather warning. But 1990 did.

Not sure how many there have been between 1990 and 2018 - there's probably a list somewhere!

kittensinthekitchen · 17/02/2022 23:53

Okay, I'm starting to think I was quoted in error then 😂

Marzipanfruit · 18/02/2022 00:05

@RancidOldHag Scotland had a red warning for storm Malik in January. It was horrific and devastating. I hope things are not so bad tomorrow and please stay safe down interesting North West.

Marzipanfruit · 18/02/2022 00:07

That should have been 'in the South West'! Sorry, posted before checking

Silversprinkles · 18/02/2022 00:07

@Meadowblossom 1987? Try end of November last year. Red weather warning here (N Scotland) for Storm Arwen. Power out for days, emergency water and food vans struggling to get to cut off villages, horrific damage and massive loss of trees. But you won't have heard about it much cos it's never reported down south. Bet we hear ALL about this one all over the news for days cos it affects England. As per usual.

RancidOldHag · 18/02/2022 00:11

Did it? I know it turned out nasty, with casualties including fatalities, but I thought that it was a different warning. And that that there was some criticism that the warnings were not higher (or did it just get misreported?)

"Yellow weather warnings were in place across all of Scotland, northern England and parts of Northern Ireland for most of Saturday, and yellow weather warnings for wind were issued across north-east England and Yorkshire until 6pm, while a warning for wind remains in force across Shetland until 8pm, the Met said.

"Another yellow warning for wind is in place for northern areas of the UK from 6pm on Sunday until noon on Monday"

Marzipanfruit · 18/02/2022 00:26

Sorry but don't read the Guardian and went by the local warnings. We had a 'grab bag' and slept downstairs with all insurance details details etc. to hand. Just saying to be helpful as it is very scary and have been on the phone to close relatives in Somerset to try to help/advise. No axe to grind just do what you can to stay safe. N.E. Scotland had community food vans etc. setup to help those in need post storm as many power lines out so it might be worth having councillor's details to hand in case they can help set up what might be needed.

BoredZelda · 18/02/2022 00:31

But even then it might be different in Scotland (different exams)

Half terms are different because our school year is different. The school schedules differ from region to region, even though exams are the same across them all. Even the number of weeks for holidays is different, so some get two weeks at Easter, but one in October, others have two in October and one in Easter. Some have two for both but fewer summer weeks. Then we have public holidays, so each area has its own local Monday holidays and half terms tend to sit around those.

We had half term which was Fri-tues, but Edinburgh just down the road has this week off. The whole thing is a bloody mess and really annoying if you live in one region but work in another.

Lougle · 18/02/2022 06:33

We've moved into the red zone from 10am today (South East).

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 18/02/2022 07:06

Both my childrens schools (central Reading and south Oxfordshire) both closed.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/02/2022 07:08

Still open in Derbyshire as far as I know. Doesn't sound bad out there yet. Will be leaving in about an hour.

MrsPussinBoots · 18/02/2022 07:15

Popping back in to say our school on the south Devon coast is definitely open today but if we don't want to risk it then absence is authorised.
