DD 22 has never heard of Prince Edward

As the title says pretty much, showed her a picture of him and she said she has never heard of him in her life. I think it shows the generational difference as most people my age would know who he is I think.

He’s rarely in the public eye though so it’s not surprising he’s not recognisable.

blackteaplease · 30/01/2022 21:06

I can tell you who he is but I wouldn't be able to identify him from a photo. I'm in my 40s

OneTC · 30/01/2022 21:07

Fair enough

I regularly forget he exists

He’s the one who got the most grief when young and now he seems the most ‘normal’

Thatsplentyjack · 30/01/2022 21:09

I don't know who he is either. I'm 32.

itwasntaparty · 30/01/2022 21:10

Why would she know him?

Buwch · 30/01/2022 21:10

I haven’t heard of him. I’m in my late 30s.

Mind you, I didn’t know Philip was the Queen’s husband until about a year before he died.

PinkiOcelot · 30/01/2022 21:10

I can get where she’s coming from with that. You never hear anything about him or his family. He seems to keep out of the public eye. I can’t remember the last time I actually saw him.

FAQs · 30/01/2022 21:11

What about Sophie, she is fairly active with charities, I wonder if she is known more than PE.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 30/01/2022 21:11

I'm 37 and I only know him as he's married to Sophie, who I could identify from a photo!

TruJay · 30/01/2022 21:11

My mum was talking about him to my DH the other today and he’d never heard of him either, had absolutely no idea there was a third brother. Dh is 34. Edward is not very regularly mentioned so wouldn’t be surprised if many people don’t actually know about him.

Did your think he was just some guy who kept following her around? Grin

That shows a quite astounding lack of interest in the UK head of state, and lack of engagement with current affairs. I assume you live in the UK?

I'm a similar age, and a staunch republican, and I've known who he was since I was a child. I'm not into following the royals, I just watch the news occasionally.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 30/01/2022 21:13

I know who he is, but I probably couldn't pick him out in a photo. I know what Sophie looks like though!

Who did you think he was?! Grin
Octomore · 30/01/2022 21:14

Prince Edward, on the other hand is pretty obscure. I know his name, and that he's the queen's son, but would struggle to identify him in a line up as he isn't often in the news.

SusannaQueen · 30/01/2022 21:20

I'd say that was pretty normal. When I was younger he was in the tabloids more, apparently the sensitive one, dropping out of the marines, having problems with some kind of theatre business. But since he married I don't think I've heard much about him. I think I'd recognise him from a recent photo, but tbh I'm not too sure. DD is 16 and I don't think she would and it wouldn't bother me, it's not useful info.

Malariahilaria · 30/01/2022 21:21

I find this quite heartening, the peripheral players of the royal family are irrelevant and should be unknown, but also un-paid for by us. There are dozens of royal old aunts, uncles and cousins we've never heard of, who do nothing at all for anyone, living rent free in amazing grace and favour apartments all over the place. Perhaps we should start to rate them by visibility and/or use and effectiveness. Anne would get top marks, Edward nil point!

BiscuitLover3678 · 30/01/2022 21:22

Neither did I until 5 mins ago

MooSakah · 30/01/2022 21:23

Seems fair enough. Unless she works for the Royal family or something like that it's no big deal.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/01/2022 21:24

If you have teens who do the Duke of Edinburgh Award and get their gold it will be Prince Edward awarding it.

Rubyupbeat · 30/01/2022 21:24

Not surprising, a couple of years ago I was talking about the comedy, The Windsors to my son and his girlfriend and talking about the characters, they didn't know quite a few of them.
When we saw it live last years the majority of the audience were over 50.

TheHoptimist · 30/01/2022 21:24

He has been hidden away on a 20 year rehabilitation programme so that they hope we forget about him and his wife's wheeling and dealing escapades.

Practice for hiding Andrew.

FluffyBooBoo · 30/01/2022 21:33

I think quite a few people that would have known what he looked like when he was younger would struggle to recognise him now. He's a) fairly average looking and b) not in the public eye in the same way as other royals.

He's probably quite glad of that.

Buwch · 30/01/2022 21:36

Who did you think he was?!
I didn’t really think about him much (would never have been able to pick him out of a lineup). Just figured some relation other than husband (on the faulty assumption that the Queen’s husband would be known as the king).

I have a huge knowledge gap when it comes to the royal family, but I have zero interest in them so actively avoid watching, listening to, or reading about them.

I was only enlightened on this point when it was a question on a game show.
