DD 22 has never heard of Prince Edward

As the title says pretty much, showed her a picture of him and she said she has never heard of him in her life. I think it shows the generational difference as most people my age would know who he is I think.

@fairylightsandwaxmelts

I know who he is, but I probably couldn't pick him out in a photo. I know what Sophie looks like though!
You would if you seen him. He's got the titty lip, hereditary baldness and just the look of entitlement.
FinallyFluid · 30/01/2022 23:54

@Buwch

I haven’t heard of him. I’m in my late 30s.

Mind you, I didn’t know Philip was the Queen’s husband until about a year before he died.

Even as a republican I find this to be a breathtaking level of ignorance.
StartupRepair · 30/01/2022 23:54

I think it's about knowing who is in your generation. I'm in my 60s and know the Queen's DC and dgc. My mother who is 91 is an absolute gun on the Kent's, Gloucesters etc.

He's our 'local' Royal and he and Sophie constantly pop up at charitable events. They've done lots with local hospitals, food banks, homeless charities, schools etc. They both seem to be busy but don't get much media attention, I see them mentioned on local social media more than anything.
I think children today are so swamped by information that it's not surprising that their general knowledge seems poor compared to in former times. Also with mobile phones all the information they need is instantly available, they don't need to actively remember stuff as much. When I was young(I'm 50) we had few TV channels, the news seemed to be permanently on and my parents got 2 newspapers delivered every day. I suspect I had a good knowledge of royalty and politics from that, but a very narrow knowledge of anything my parents didn't approve of or weren't interested in...

Does no one on this thread read the newspapers or watch the news?

Loads

I just skip the celebrity bits

rubicscubicle · 31/01/2022 00:05

Fair enough.
He has never said or done anything of note in the last decade or so.

Theblacksheepandme · 31/01/2022 00:09

I worked with this woman once, she wasn't very young so youth was no excuse. She was quite dim. She turned around once and serious as anything said Prince Philip was a barman once and that's how he met the Queen. I told her it wasn't true after I stopped laughing. I asked if the Queen met him while he worked in The Kingshead. I had to google to show her it wasn't true.

Tosement · 31/01/2022 00:14

DD and I were just watching Goggle box and the had a snippet of Harry and Meghan's interview on it. She asked who his dad was and thought Harry was older than William..I am pretty certain she wouldn't know who Princess Anne or Prince Edward were. I think the Royal family are losing their relevance in the modern age.

Is your daughter very young? I assume so if she doesn’t know the order of succession, which will continue to be very relevant during her life because those heirs will go on to be the Heads of State (presuming she’s in the UK).

He’s the Head of State’s son, not a presenter on GMTV, and has been so for over 50 years.

You’re either pretending you aren’t sure who he is, or pretending you read the papers and watch the news.

Apparently Charles is now DofE and the decision about what to do with the title when he becomes king hasn't been sorted yet. Edward was originally in the running then it was changed.
Don't know why but all these spare dukedoms must be a real headacheGrin[/quote]
I thought it stays with the Queen until she dies then it returns to the crown and the next Monarch Charles can redistribute it.

I could be totally wrong but I think HMQ holds Duchess of Edinburgh amongst various titles and Charles has Prince Charles of Edinburgh as the title he was born with, same as Bea & Eugenie are Princess Bea of York.

You sound like a kind person who thinks the best of people but what are they actually doing beyond turning up at events, cutting ribbons, waving, making small talk and shaking a few hands?

Are they donating any of their significant inherited wealth to the homeless charities and food banks? Helping regularly with literacy at the schools? Thought not. Royal engagements aren’t difficult. It’s not like doing a full time job. Roll up at the hospital at 11 am to a pre-arranged crowd of people clapping and calling you ‘sir’ and curtsying. Chauffeured home after lunch at 2 pm for a hard afternoon of stamp collecting or whatever they do. I’m not surprised that some young people don’t know who they are.

OneTC · 31/01/2022 00:30

I said earlier I knew who he was but had forgotten about him, when someone mentioned 4 children earlier I realised I had forgotten about Anne as well. I'm also not from the UK but I have lived here for a long time. In all that time though he hasn't really been in the public eye or reportedly on widely in the press though

I know the general likely order of succession but don't really care beyond that

GameofPhones · 31/01/2022 00:33

I only recently found out that the German Kaiser (of WW1) was Queen Victoria's grandson. That they had such a close bond she was in his arms when she died. I think I should have known this.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 31/01/2022 00:35

He was also mentioned on last year's I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, because he went out with Ruthie Henshall when he was in his twenties.

Changemaname1 · 31/01/2022 00:35

I only knew this from watching the crown last year tbf

5YearsLeft · 31/01/2022 00:36

@VladmirsPoutine

I suspect he got the royal thing right. If I were royal I would like to be obscure too! Just me, my diamonds and crown in my little castle. Look what happens when you want fame and attention.
Is “my little castle” like when posters are always saying “my little family”? I think you’ve absolutely got it right though, and I’d choose the little castle Grin
Thoosa · 31/01/2022 00:37

If you’re a member of the BRF and you’re not attracting headlines, you’re probably doing quite well.

StartupRepair · 31/01/2022 00:43

In WW1, King of England, German Kaiser and Tsar of Russia were all first cousins, grandsons of Victoria. They had spent their childhoods and youth having long summer holidays together.

Bunnycat101 · 31/01/2022 00:44

There is just something about general knowledge but for that age group he probably just isn’t very visible on the media. No recent scandals and also not as prominent as others. What I think is more interesting though is his children. Most of the queen’s grandchildren are very visible in some way or another. Id be able to have a stab at recognising Lady Louise but no idea about her brother. They have potentially managed to carve an easier life for their children through a bit more anonymity compared to some of the others of their generation.

SquirrelG · 31/01/2022 00:45

I find it bizarre when people don't have basic general knowledge. Agree.

Times have changed - oh really, and times have never changed in the past? Basic general knowledge is important, whatever time we live in.

SnowdaySewday · 31/01/2022 00:47

I could be totally wrong but I think HMQ holds Duchess of Edinburgh amongst various titles and Charles has Prince Charles of Edinburgh as the title he was born with, same as Bea & Eugenie are Princess Bea of York.

If anything, HMQ would now be the dowager Duchess of Edinburgh, but Queen outranks duchess so its not a title she uses.

Prince Charles, as eldest son, inherited the Duke of Edinburgh title when Prince Philip died. When he becomes King, the title reverts to the crown and, as king, Charles can then redistribute it as he sees fit.

It has been made known that Prince Edward is to be next to receive the title (given as explanation for him being made an Earl on marriage rather than a Royal Duke) but, by the time it comes for distribution, Charles will be king and therefore makes the rules and it's anyone's guess if he will decide to follow through on his parents' wishes.

SleepingStandingUp · 31/01/2022 00:49

Im 40, I do find it crazy that there's a poster who think Phillip was just the Queens bit in the side and the number of people who have no idea who her kids are. Surely this is the kind of stuff that sinks in by osmosis just by being out in the world?? I'd probably be surprised how few could name their partners or the grandkids but fair enough, they're further down the line and I'm a bit embarrassed I can name all the great grandkids but surely Queen, married Phillip, had 4 kids, Charles, Anne, Andrew, Edward is pretty basic knowledge if you live in the UL

Cantleave · 31/01/2022 00:54

I find it really strange that so many people don’t know these members of the Royal Family. I am no Royalist but know that Prince Edward is 14th in the line of Succession without looking it up! There are actually 24 direct descendants of the Queen.

SenecaFallsRedux · 31/01/2022 00:57

There are actually two Prince Edwards. HRH the Duke of Kent, the Queen's first cousin, is also Prince Edward.

And as a previous poster pointed out, the queen is Duchess of Edinburgh by marriage. But she has plenty of titles in her own right so no need of that one. Prince Charles is the current Duke of Edinburgh.

SleepingStandingUp · 31/01/2022 00:57

Charles, William, Harry, George, Charlotte, Louis, Archie, Lillibet Anne, Peter, Zara, Isla, Savannah, Mia, Lena, Lucas Andrew, Beatrice, Eugenie, August, Sienna Edward, Louise, James

Did I get them all right from memory??
