DD 22 has never heard of Prince Edward

As the title says pretty much, showed her a picture of him and she said she has never heard of him in her life. I think it shows the generational difference as most people my age would know who he is I think.

OP posts:

@Octomore

Prince Edward, on the other hand is pretty obscure. I know his name, and that he's the queen's son, but would struggle to identify him in a line up as he isn't often in the news.
I think it's Andrew who does police line ups
TheMarzipanDildo · 30/01/2022 21:39

I’m 22 and I know who Prince Edward is!
do I get a prize

VladmirsPoutine · 30/01/2022 21:41

I suspect he got the royal thing right. If I were royal I would like to be obscure too! Just me, my diamonds and crown in my little castle. Look what happens when you want fame and attention.

I'm not a royalist but boringly I do know who the Queen's children and grandchildren are and even princess Margaret's offspring ( although I would struggle with grandchildren ) I'm 48 though and read the papers in the 80,s not sure my Dh could name them though 🤷

Emmelina · 30/01/2022 21:45

He’s a quiet one. Does his duties. Doesn’t draw attention to himself.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 30/01/2022 21:45

I remember him getting married to Sophie, and winking as she got to the alter. Her dress was laaaavelyyyyy.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 30/01/2022 21:46

Meh. Loads of people have no interest in celebrities.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2022 21:46

I danced with him once.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 30/01/2022 21:46

Wait - hasnt your DD seen The Crown?!

Iamthewombat · 30/01/2022 21:48

Good one.

OP, if your daughter is paying tax then she’ll be subsidising the idle posh fool, so best that she knows who he is!

ChocolateRiver · 30/01/2022 21:48

I’m 40 and know who he is and would easily recognise him in a photo.

BitterTits · 30/01/2022 21:49

I had a bit of an argument with him once. I was a feisty teen and pissed off at the lack of activities for girls on a DofE anniversary weekend - the boys played football on a beach while we did nothing.

Anyway, neither my DC (younger) or my siblings (between 24 and 30) would know either I don't think. The royal family is irrelevant.

PuppyMonkey · 30/01/2022 21:51

I think he had to go into hiding after the great It’s a Knockout debacle of the 1980s.Grin

toppkatz · 30/01/2022 21:53

My dd is 22 as well, and I'm frequently amazed by the sheer lack of general knowledge among her and her friends. I'm not suggesting that they should teach the royal family tree at school, but they don't seem to teach much at all in the way of general knowledge these days.

While I couldn't name all the grandchildren with any certainty, it is surprising that so many people don't know the names of all four of the Queen's children.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 30/01/2022 21:53

@Buwch

I haven’t heard of him. I’m in my late 30s.

Mind you, I didn’t know Philip was the Queen’s husband until about a year before he died.

I'm forever baffled at this kind of lack of basic general knowledge.
NiceCardigan · 30/01/2022 21:53

He presented DD2’s degree - he did a short non rambling speech and smiled a lot. He seemed a nice enough chap.

VladmirsPoutine · 30/01/2022 21:55

On the contrary I think this is brilliant. It means the royals are losing their cachet. They're becoming less relevant and gen z certainly wonder what the point of a monarchy is altogether. If their relevance continues to fade and Andy gets strung up I reckon we might, just might start taking republicanism seriously.

TheMadGardener · 30/01/2022 21:58

The kids at my school don't know who Prince Charles is. They know the Queen, William and Kate, but not much more. They were most surprised when I told them that when the Queen dies Charles will be King ("who's he?) - they assumed William was up next as they know him.

Pedalpushers · 30/01/2022 21:58

Philip surprises me as he was a prominent public figure, but then we all know different things and have our blind spots! Edward doesn't really surprise me, he's barely in the public eye. To be honest, until all this recent news I'd have said Fergie, Beatrice and Eugenie were more famous than Andrew.

How could you not know? I mean...how?
Jasmine5552 · 30/01/2022 21:59

I am 38 and I have heard of him but I don't think he has been in the public eye for quite a while now.

iago · 30/01/2022 21:59

How can you teach General Knowledge?!

Pallisers · 30/01/2022 22:01

it is the equivalent of your generation not knowing, say, exactly who the Duke of Kent is and how he is related to the queen - quite normal I would think. the incumbent and immediate heirs are all that matter (insofar as any of it matters)

Not knowing Philip was married to Elizabeth takes a bit of doing though - well done.

JSL52 · 30/01/2022 22:02

I'm a republican but I can't believe the lack of knowledge on here.

Rosebel · 30/01/2022 22:03

I quite like Prince Edward just because he seems so normal, well as normal as he can be.
Having said that I'm 40 and doubt I'd know him from a photo. My 15 year old would probably recognise him, she's a bit of a Royalist 🤔
