DD 22 has never heard of Prince Edward

As the title says pretty much, showed her a picture of him and she said she has never heard of him in her life. I think it shows the generational difference as most people my age would know who he is I think.

Correction to my post. The Queen is Dowager Duchess of Edinburgh. Camilla is the present Duchess of Edinburgh.

SenecaFallsRedux · 31/01/2022 01:09

Did I get them all right from memory??

Anne and her direct descendants come after Andrew and Edward and their descendants. The change from male preference primogeniture was not retroactive.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/01/2022 01:09

I always have to check to see where the Kents, Gloucestershire and Prince Michael fit in.

There are actually two Prince Edwards. HRH the Duke of Kent, the Queen's first cousin, is also Prince Edward.

His title before inheriting Duke of Kent was Prince Edward of Kent, just as his brother is Prince Michael of Kent.

I'll go and google but I think the other one is Prince Edward of Edinburgh.

It was vague birth order not line to the throne

There is no Prince Edward of Edinburgh. The two Prince Edwards are the Duke of Kent and the Earl of Wessex.

I'm 60 and I work with a lot of 20/30 yr olds who genuinely have no clue about the RF. They had no idea who the Queen was married to and were genuinely surprised by the state funeral on TV of Prince Philip.

I find it fascinating, it's like they just do not exist on their radar. Obviously when I was growing up in 70s 80s it was common knowledge I think who the Queens children were and who they were married to.

It's a sign of the times and I find it's not exclusive to the RF they have no real knowledge of domestic political situations and absolutely none of worldwide affairs.

Is that right, Seneca? My understanding was that the title had gone back to the Crown, and is at the discretion of the monarch to issue it's next creation?
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 31/01/2022 01:18

Apparently Charles is now DofE and the decision about what to do with the title when he becomes king hasn't been sorted yet. Edward was originally in the running then it was changed.
Don't know why but all these spare dukedoms must be a real headache

Maybe the Queen thought it best to wait to see what was taken back from Andrew before dishing them out again?! If you're organising a household budget, you look at all the available income before assigning your spending, so that's probably the royal version!

On the surface of it, it does seem like general knowledge is lacking among the younger generation of adults, BUT I think this is only a small part of the story. When people my age (mid 40s) were growing up, there were some topics (like the RF) that were considered 'central' common knowledge and then a relatively small sphere of wider knowledge that would cross your path, depending on a few relatively static circumstances such as your family, background, hometown etc. Most of the other stuff would have to be specifically sought out and searched for (often in vain); realistically, I wouldn't have cared to bother thinking about 99.999r% of it.

The internet has now just completely blown the concept of general knowledge out of the water. When I was 18, I not only wouldn't have known, say, who my local borough councillors were, but I also wouldn't have known an easy way of finding out their names. Maybe take a trip to the council offices when I next had an opportunity and then try to wade through several of the departments there, to find somebody who could verify the official list.

Contrast that with today, where, earlier on (when he was awake) - a Sunday evening - I could have asked my 9yo DS the name, birthdate and spouse's name of the President of Timor l'Este, and he could have found it out - and far more associated info besides - in 5 seconds. In fact, I've just done that, and found the answers.... and now I've forgotten again. Not only is there a billion-fold the amount of information out there - so in no way cut and dried as to which minuscule sections of it you would consider essential - but there's no need whatsoever to retain most of it in your head anymore, because it's all right there instantly whenever and whatever you want/need to know.

That’s refreshing to hear and adds hope that ours will be the last generation to have a monarchy.

My 21 year old had no idea who Philip was (when he died) or who any other member of the Windsor family was, apart from Elizabeth.

SenecaFallsRedux · 31/01/2022 01:20

There was also another Prince William. Prince William of Gloucester was a first cousin of the Queen who was in line to become Duke of Gloucester, but he died in a plane crash. The current Duke of Gloucester, Prince Richard, is his younger brother.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 31/01/2022 01:22

I’m 35 and could not be less arsed about the Royals, other than getting shut of the lot of them, I couldn’t pick them out in a line up.

I'm surprised that he didn't know who Philip was. He was the husband of the Head of State.
alldressedupinblue · 31/01/2022 01:25

Fun fact - there are 2 living Prince Edwards. The Earl of Wessex (son of HM) and the Duke of Kent (married to the lovely prize-giving Duchess)!

Yes, that was just mentioned

If grown adults don’t know who Prince Philip is then it’s unlikely they’ll have the ability to campaign to scrap the monarchy. Ignorance isn’t a good thing.

Even as a republican I find this to be a breathtaking level of ignorance.
This might be shocking to you, but even some of the most educated people have knowledge-gaps. I’m aware that my Philip-gap is a very surprising one, which is why its stuck with me. I’m not embarrassed to say I have close to zero curiosity when it comes to the royal family though.

SenecaFallsRedux · 31/01/2022 01:28

Maireas, I don't think it goes back to the crown until the Queen dies. I'm pretty sure that the Letters Patent that created the title for Philip by King George VI specified that it would go to Philip, with the usual language : "and heirs male of his body." When Charles becomes King, the title will merge with the crown and Charles can grant it again, if he so wishes.

Tosement · 31/01/2022 01:29

That is right, @Maireas. The title does not go back to the Crown until its user becomes monarch, so until Charles is King.

Yes, I think you're right. It will then be in the gift of Charles.
Buwch · 31/01/2022 01:31

Another name, associated with the royal family, that I was not remotely curious about.

Hen2018 · 31/01/2022 01:33

I only know who Andrew is because he’s the gay one. The only other thing I remember were some spiteful photos of him crying during his training for the Marines (and who could blame him).

Hen2018 · 31/01/2022 01:36

No, Andrew’s the pervert. Edward was the one who had to leave the marines after 4 months.

Andrew is currently in the news because of the Epstein scandal. I would be surprised if he's gay. He's never been in the Marines. I don't know of any royal who has come out as gay.
