DD 22 has never heard of Prince Edward

As the title says pretty much, showed her a picture of him and she said she has never heard of him in her life. I think it shows the generational difference as most people my age would know who he is I think.

TOSEMENT is “a bit weird” ????

Tosement · 01/02/2022 13:41

‘Look how little I know! Look how little I care about current affairs! Hahaha, what am I like eh? Anyway, my loved ones and I are okay so who gives a toss what’s going on?’

‘Yes, I agree, you are quite ignorant.’

‘How dare you!’

ConfusedHmm

That's fascinating. I'm the same age as Edward and was infuriated when he was lauded as Educated Edward and got into Cambridge with far inferior A levels to me.

I followed his career through failing in the Royal Marines, to failing in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useless Company, a kiss'n'tell by Ulrika Jonsson and the ignominy of It's A Royal Knockout.

But then he disappeared like a fart in the wind. Or maybe I decided it didn't matter and it was pointless to rage against mediocrities whose mum had a lot more money than mine. I suppose his mummy should be prouder that he appears to have a normal family life and doesn't consort with sex offenders and the teenage victims of their parties.

I am almost indifferent about Prince Harry and Meghan and his mummy's money. Diana got £15 million on divorce and Harry got the lion's share when she died because his brother William was well looked after by daddy and granny.

At the time of the divorce - 1995 - there was a lot of talk that Princess Diana had been shortchanged. I'd like to be shortchanged with £15 million. Wouldn't you?

limitedperiodonly · 01/02/2022 14:56

That said I don't think not knowing who the Head of State is and her dear departed husband and hangers on is anything to boast about @Buwch.

Because I have a good memory I can name loads of cabinet ministers - present and past. Past is the relevant term. They're not there any more unlike Queenie and members of her family who will always be all right even if no one voted for them.

derxa · 01/02/2022 15:44

@Buwch

Diana is dead. You know that, right? Yes I remember this well.

One morning, my mother came into my room and woke me up. She had a very solemn look on her face.

“Buwch, I’ve got something to tell you....Princess Diana has died”

It took me a couple of second to process, before I replied “Why would I care?” and went back to sleep.

To me, the Windsors are roughly as interesting as the Kardashians.

Hmm

Me neither - as someone who is a similar age, and who also reads the news more than I watch it, I have no idea how you couldn't know. He used to make the news very regularly for his racist remarks, if nothing else.

Octomore · 01/02/2022 16:48

@kitkat151 If you (and seemingly everyone you know) really have zero knowledge of current affairs, and no interest in what our government is doing, please tell me you don't vote? I hope you abstain from all elections and referendums?

If you do vote, what the hell do you base it on?

My apologies, I’ll rephrase.

‘Look how little my adult kids know! Look how little my adult kids care about current affairs! Hahaha, what are they like eh? Anyway, they’re okay so why should they give a toss what’s going on?’

‘Yes, I agree, they do sound too quite ignorant.’

‘How dare you!’

I certainly think it’s a serious issue that adults don’t take any interest in who governs the country, certainly. I agree with @Octomore.

Why bother posting when you've not even bothered to read my posts?🙄.... I have an excellent knowledge of all things political and current affairs AND Royalty

Octomore · 01/02/2022 17:48

It's one thing to acknowledge that your knowledge of what the government is up to is probably lacking.

It's quite another to claim that the way this country is governed "has no relevance" to you or people you know.

The latter displays really astounding levels of ignorance.

Everyone in this country (a) pays taxes in some form (even someone with no income or wealth will pay VAT on purchases, and customs duties indirectly), and (b) is impacted by government decisions about public services (even wealthy people who use private healthcare will drive on our roads and use our publicly funded legal system, for example). We are also all impacted by things like consumer protection laws, criminal laws etc. etc.

Anyone in the UK who claims that our government and its actions are of no relevance to them is either extremely stupid, or deluded/insane.

Octomore · 01/02/2022 17:50

@kitkat151 But you claim that our government is of no relevance to your kids.

If you knew a lot about current affairs you would know that government decisions are extremely relevant to everybody.

Octomore · 01/02/2022 17:52

it all goes over my kids heads.....they have zero interest in any of it.......not one of my 3 20/30s kids went to uni but they all have good jobs....Got/ getting their first homes.....are happy raising their children....they don’t have any interest in government either......,they just ( like all their friends) have no interest in any ‘news’. So, no, it is of no relevance to them at all....

^ This is what I was referring to. You genuinely believe that the government is ok no relevance to your adult children's lives.

Octomore · 01/02/2022 17:53

(is of no relevance)

Iamthewombat · 01/02/2022 17:54

One of the things that makes me laugh about Mumsnet is how badly some posters react to being disagreed with, or especially being bested in an argument. The last few pages of this thread are a great example:

You’re weird.

You have serious issues.

In order to fill up my bingo card I am waiting for the following:

Why do you care so much?

You sound very angry.

You must be a man.

True, but individuals eventually realise they can do nothing to change them, and perhaps lose interest for that reason. To try to change them, you have to belong to some group or other, and they have their own problems of comprehensibility.

But they can do something to change them. The easiest being taking some interest in current affairs and voting based on an educated decision.
Octomore · 01/02/2022 18:54

The idea that people can do nothing to influence the way their country is governed isn't true.

In order to have an influence you need to get informed about politics, vote, campaign, march, petition etc. And no, that sort of action isn't successful in achieving change every time, but it can and does work. Just because most people don't bother doesn't mean that influencing change is impossible.

Attitudes like those of kitkat151 ("my adult kids don't care about the government because it's irrelevant to them, and they're doing ok for themselves so being ignorant and apathetic is just fine") make me despair

peaceanddove · 01/02/2022 18:56

@toppkatz

My dd is 22 as well, and I'm frequently amazed by the sheer lack of general knowledge among her and her friends. I'm not suggesting that they should teach the royal family tree at school, but they don't seem to teach much at all in the way of general knowledge these days.

While I couldn't name all the grandchildren with any certainty, it is surprising that so many people don't know the names of all four of the Queen's children.

This!

Both our DDs are considered academic. Both went to grammar school. Excellent GCSE and A Levels etc.

Yet, their general knowledge is somewhat lacking. So much so, that I bought them the DK Children's Atlas + accompanying globe, Christmas 2021 - when I realised (to my horror) that neither of them could point to Germany on a map. Or Morocco. Or Brazil. Or...Or...Or...

Octomore · 01/02/2022 18:58

Even on a really basic level, anyone with empathy should take a vague interest in UK foreign policy (the evacuation of Afghanistan anyone?) and how we treat vulnerable people in this country (homeless people, disabled people etc.).

Saying "Well I'm doing ok, so I'm not bothered" should be a deeply shameful thing. People should be appalled when they hear admissions like that, because it's a horrific attitude to have.
