What's your top 3 recurring nightmares?

ImSoMagical · 28/01/2022 14:25

So I had all 3 at once last night 🤣.
1 - I'm barefoot in a public toilet
2 - I'm swimming far out in the ocean terrified of fish and sharks
3 - a tiger and/or lion is in my house.
Think I'll go check up what that means......

Teeth falling out

Sometimes a spider running around, but dont have that one too often.

Other one is not knowing whether a relative has died or not[they always have]. I couldnt stop dreaming about one dead relative. Someone suggested I visited their grave. I did. And that stoppped the dreams after that.

lightand · 29/01/2022 21:36

@SeeminglyOblivious

Lots of teeth dreams on here...i think teeth are supposed to symbolise money? So teeth falling out is some kind of financial worry or strain.
Mine is because I had a rogue dentist when I was a chld and teenager. He filled far too many teeth unnecessarily. He was struck off eventually. Ironically by a relative of the family I married into. She reported him. My family did not know he was rogue and just assumed my teeth needed lots of fillings.

So me and teeth do not go together well.

  1. I am in a big building like a school or a hotel and I need to find a bathroom so I can shower in private. Only the more I search, the less private they are.
  2. I am back at school to do sixth form again except I am the age I am now and I realise that it’s ridiculous for a 43 year old to be back at school. All my schoolmates are there but they are still 17.
  3. It’s the apocalypse. I’m trying to get away from it but all the buildings are falling down and the planes are dropping bombs everywhere.

I used to have a recurring dream that I was at Hogwarts with Benedict Cumberbatch and we had to defeat Voldemort together. It was awesome.

SallyWD · 29/01/2022 23:09

I have 4:
Teeth falling out
Naked in public
Trying to run away from something but being paralysed
Being back with my ex

Yourinmyspot · 29/01/2022 23:41

That I hadn’t really had DD she was just my imagination. She’s 9 now and I don’t dream it very often but for the first six months it was most nights. I think it was because we had six miscarriages before her and I just kept thinking she wasn’t really here.

I do remember waking up though then seeing her and feeling so relieved.

InThePresenceOfWeevil · 30/01/2022 00:28

Lots of previously mentioned posts. But the worst one I have is that I've meant to have been feeding someone's pets whilst they're on holiday, I forget and they all die. It's horrific and the trauma and guilt I feel in the dream is horrendous

Babyroobs · 30/01/2022 01:39

@DarleneSnell

Teeth falling out. Glad it's not just me!

Late or missed uni assignment even though it's years behind me.

Weirdly, my old rabbit neglected in a hutch, we've forgotten about him and left no food, the cage is all nasty. Strange as he's been gone years after a long life.

"Apocalyptic" types - asteroid about to hit, plane crash, bombs going to drop, volcano etc. I never seem to die though.

I frequently have the rabbit one. It is so realistic that I start questioning whether we did actually neglect our rabbits as children. They were pretty mollycoddled so I don't think so. I think it must stem from guilt from childhood for some reason.
jellybe · 30/01/2022 03:40
  1. (Haven't had this one since I quit teaching) I have no voice and the kids I'm trying to teach are ignoring me even though I'm trying to shout not a sound is coming out.
  2. I'm driving but I have no control over the car, breaks aren't working.
  3. Im being chased by a T- Rex.
FrenchFancie · 30/01/2022 04:56
  1. That I have a pet (like a horse or a cat) and I’ve forgotten to feed them or care for them and when I get to them they are somehow still alive but suffering horribly. The guilt and revulsion I feel is horrific.
  2. Needing a wee bit can’t find anywhere to go so have to see somewhere embarrassing and public like the checkout aisle of the big Asda’s
  3. That Dd is falling from somewhere high and I can’t catch her, I just watch her fall to her death. This one usually wakes me up as I leap up trying to grab her. Happened all the bloody time when she was a baby, mercifully much rarer now and I’ve stopped giving DH a heart attack at 3am…
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 30/01/2022 10:33

The only toilet is in public and I'm desperate for the loo. I finally decide to go and I just can't and everyone is walking by looking at me.

Doing everything I normally do in life but I'm naked and I don't know why.

Teeth start falling out.

I'm not really stressed in real life, my dreams are more stressful than anything else.

HeechulOppa · 31/01/2022 00:45

I’m astounded by how many people have the neglected pet dream!! I have that a lot too and it’s so traumatic. I genuinely thought I was the only one.

Really interesting how our minds decide what is nightmare fodder. I’ll tell you about the most frightening dream I ever had and you’ll no doubt think I’m on drugs! It’s the only dream I’ve ever had where I woke bolt upright in bed, sweating and shaking, and I ended up crying for about 20 minutes. I couldn’t get back to sleep I was so utterly terrified. So what was this terribly scary dream?

Theon Greyjoy From Game of Thrones (Alfie Allen) was in my kitchen drying my plates, and he wasn’t putting them away correctly.

I mean... what??? Why the hell did my subconscious decide that was scarier than the dream where I was caught up in a nuclear bombing, or where I dreamed my dad had been killed? I don’t even give a toss about washing up in real life!

BritInAus · 31/01/2022 05:37
  1. I'm about to go to the airport to fly long haul and I only have 2 minutes to pack

  2. I'm about to get my A level results (I'm 38!!!!)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/01/2022 08:30

One: there’s a German Lit exam imminent, and not only have I not read any of the books, I don’t even know what they are.
Not sure why I get this one - I got quite a respectable A level grade. And it’s always German, never French or Russian, which I also did for A level.

Two: it’s about 4 pm on Christmas Eve and I’ve forgotten to buy any presents, a tree, or anything else. (I do know the origin of this one though.).

Three: people round for dinner, it’s nearly 11 pm and the bloody potatoes still aren’t cooked.

I’ve just realised that I haven’t had any of these for some time, though. They used to be regulars which would have me waking up and thinking phew, thank God it was only a dream.

unhappy46 · 31/01/2022 10:38
  1. Teeth falling out
  2. Falling (from a great height)
  3. Being chased round a house by someone who I can't see but know is there. I'm never caught and I'm constantly trying to hide.
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/01/2022 11:30

Just remembered another I often had.

Uni building I used most had ‘paternoster’ lifts, I.e. no doors and they never stop, you just step in and out.*
In my regular nightmare, of course, they were always going too fast, so I couldn’t get on or off.

*At the time, a very long time ago, a cheap No. 6 fag would last an entire circuit - up, down and back to where you started. 🙂

RedRec · 31/01/2022 11:35

Just remembered another one. I have killed someone (although can't remember doing it) and the long arm of the law is closing in on me!
Always a relief to wake up from that one.

UserBot9to5 · 31/01/2022 16:16

oh I've had that one too. I had it just after I left an abusive x and I woke up distressed. But I think the person I killed was the old me. Especially as the person I killed, they were like some sort of janitor, faceless, sexless, I had no hatred for this person, I just stabbed them Confused then I was ''on the run'' to Ireland. I think it was the old me I killed. I was also scared the police would catch me but I think in my real life I was afraid of my x, and he represented the Authority that could control me/detain me.

Zombiemum1946 · 31/01/2022 17:26

Zombie Apocalypse .
Serial killer
In trouble at work for ordering the wrong items again.

IntermittentParps · 31/01/2022 17:40

Just the loo one, like just about everybody else here Grin
Although I wouldn't call them 'nightmares' exactly, just a bit stressful.
The loo isn't usually dirty, just exposed in some way, and I don't massively panic. Actually they're not always even that stressful.
Sometimes it's not a loo but a shower/private room I need to find, because I have to get dressed/ready for a wedding or other event. So there's a time-pressure element.

I've dreamed about being in a post-apocalyptic/nuclear landscape of some kind. Not often, but it recurs sometimes.

UserBot9to5 · 31/01/2022 17:57

Ive never had the functioning toilet dream dream but i have a tendency to overshare, and over emote 😳 ive never repressed an emotion in my life.

My mother who gets the dream regularly is very buttoned up.

Somethingsnappy · 31/01/2022 19:30

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER. Snap about the German exam! Except in my dream I'm about to do it for uni finals (although I only ever did it at A level), and I have a week to prepare 3 year's worth of work that I haven't done. I wake up sweating and dry-mouthed. Furchtbar!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/01/2022 19:59

@loveattheFair

Has anyone tried to wake themselves up whilst their dreaming? Like you know your asleep but your minds telling you to wake up because it's getting too scary.

Anyway,

1- Being trapped in a building with lots of doors and narrow corridors and all the doors I go through lead me back to the same place.

2- Teeth becoming loose/cracking/falling out.

3- Pulling lots of thick, stringy stuff from my mouth. Similar to lots and lots of chewed up bubble gum. I can never get it all out.

I had an incredibly vivid dream that I was pregnant - never had such a dream before. In my dream, though, I told myself I couldn’t possibly be pregnant - I was far too old (I am) and woke up.

Two or three days later I heard from a dd that she was pregnant. She’d known for over a week, but hadn’t told us because they’d been told at the scan of a serious risk of abnormalities.
So she hadn’t told us, until hearing that further tests had shown all to be fine.
I’m sure my dream was some sort of telepathy when dd was so worried.

IntermittentParps · 01/02/2022 08:38

GETTING, that's so interesting.
I wonder if you'd unconsciously picked up on her worries about her scan? (I'm not dismissing you at all, BTW; I think that is basically how what we call 'telepathy' works!)

UserBot9to5 · 01/02/2022 08:43

Yeh, an intuition about your own "baby", grandmotherhood.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/02/2022 09:54

Yes, that’s what I meant.

My DM was very occasionally telepathic over long distances, but only when someone was in some sort of great distress, or under a lot of stress. She was always hyper-hyper sensitive though, which could sometimes make her difficult to live with.
But it had never happened to me before.
