What's your top 3 recurring nightmares?

ImSoMagical · 28/01/2022 14:25

So I had all 3 at once last night 🤣.
1 - I'm barefoot in a public toilet
2 - I'm swimming far out in the ocean terrified of fish and sharks
3 - a tiger and/or lion is in my house.
Think I'll go check up what that means......

Needing the loo but all the toilets are visible. Usually it's a really big room, with loads of loos with variants of no door, half a door, a smaller side room that has several cubicles that lock, but no toilets in them, just empty stalls. I have to decide whether to go where I can be seen, or go on the floor in a locked cubicle. If I choose the cubicle the lock fails or I realise at the point of no return that there is a gap around the door and people are looking in.

Being in an emergency situation and not being able to see - either in a smoke filled house trying to get people out before they die, or some other emergency and I just can't open my eyes to see. I'm stumbling around, and I know everyone will die, but I can't open my eyes.

Needing to defend someone else, needing to hit someone, and not being able to. I try to punch but it's like the air is really thick and slows my arm down. I barely touch the person I'm trying to hit. Over and over again.

As a kid I had a couple of recurring ones - a dream of being in a car that wouldn't stop. I'd be in the back and it would start rolling down a hill, I'd climb to the front and the brake would be really hard and I couldn't push the pedal down. I'd have to steer wildly, as the car just got faster and faster.

I also had a really horrid one that was really weird. I was in a big castle, and running from a man that was chasing me. I would run as fast as I could and he would just be walking, but always catching me up. I knew he was going to kill me if he caught me. I'd dive into rooms and lock the door, only to find I'd locked myself in with him. I'd hide in an empty room and he'd come out from under a bed. I'd get into a cupboard and he would turn flat as paper and slide under the door jesus I'm feeling a bit ill remembering it!

1.im flying and being chased

  1. I've put my baby ( one of my , now full grown, sons not DD but I've never sure which one) in a cupboard and he's been there all night and I want him out but I keep getting stopped.
  2. My Dad and grandparents are still alive in the dream then I wake up and realise they have all long gone.
BrinksmansEntry · 28/01/2022 23:20

Being left behind when the rest of humanity are leaving on spaceships to travel to a new earth. No communication possible. DH and DC waving goodbye. And then I realise there is nobody else on earth.

Vampires

Being back in 1987
Living with my family
My first marriage.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 28/01/2022 23:23

I used to have the teeth one, but haven't now for many years. I also have the phone one. There are far too many numbers and symbols and I just can't get it to work. I've been dreaming this one since the mid 1980s, so BlackBerrys properly freaked me out when they arrived.

My version of the toilets one is where they are in communal cubicles, or in the corner of a carpeted room. Showers that are over carpets often also feature.

I also have the neglected pets one - my beloved cats who would be 32 now. That's definitely a nightmare rather than just a weird recurring dream.

Ones that haven't been mentioned are

  • getting back to where my car should be and it having been stolen. This one is so frequent I now work out pretty quickly it's a dream when it's happening and make myself "find" the car.
  • out of control lifts, precarious staircases and Alice in Wonderland doors
  • not being able to turn the lights on and knowing there's something or someone there. I usually kind of know it's a dream and start screaming to wake myself up. DH loves that...
  • being in a city with roaming dinosaurs. I frequently have to climb on top of a chest freezer in the back of a corner shop so the TRex can't bend down low enough to see me.

Brains are weird and untrustworthy.

Titsywoo · 28/01/2022 23:26

One of my children goes missing and I can't find them (along with the horrible trying to call for help and not being able to dial the right number)

Teeth falling out or being naked in public (anxiety dreams)

Going on a plane and not being able to get home

CurrantAffair · 28/01/2022 23:34

Plane crash
Can't find kids
Completely forgot to do work

StarryGazeyEyes · 28/01/2022 23:46

Bwix Desperate for a wee, in a maze of bathroom where I keep on opening cubicle doors and finding a shower or a completely solid toilet or a hole where a toilet should be or a washbasin... or an empty tiled room.

That is EXACTLY what I dream!

Geppili · 28/01/2022 23:49

Desperate for wee. All loos and sinks are overflowing with poo.

Being slim again and wearing lovely clothes.

Kicking my abusive mother's head around in a football game with my long estranged sister.

minipie · 28/01/2022 23:58

I have to take an A level for which I have done no prep. Often in a subject that doesn’t even exist.

My plane is leaving in 30 minutes and I still have to dress, pack and get there.

I have to be in a play in 5 minutes and I don’t know any of the lines.

(There’s a theme here…. Might just be related to my last minute approach to everything 😬)

aaahshoot · 29/01/2022 00:05

Turns out mine are pretty standard then - can't believe how many people have the exact same :

The search for a toilet that isn't filthy or faulty in some way.

Am in sixth form and haven't been going to lessons or doing any work.

PivotPivotPivottt · 29/01/2022 00:16

  1. I see a plane falling from the sky. Everytime I have this dream I say "I dream about this all the time but this one is real". And then I say "I say that everytime but it really is real this time" Grin
  1. I'm on a plane that's trying to take off but can't so just keeps taxiing through the main roads trying to find somewhere to take off.
  1. I'm at the airport waiting to board a plane and I watch a plane take off and fall from the sky.

I'm definitely not terrified of flying and definitely don't read too much stuff about plane crashes, watch too much Air Crash Investigation and plane crashes on YouTube Hmm🙄

Non plane related

  1. Trying to call 999 and I can't dial the number
  1. I'm out in public and realise I'm naked
  1. There's a poltergeist in my house.
Lndnmummy · 29/01/2022 00:55

@SmallGreenStripes we have exactly the same dreams!!!

Lndnmummy · 29/01/2022 00:57

@minipie i have the exam one! Always in german. I wake up

HeechulOppa · 29/01/2022 02:23
  1. I’m visiting London (I live in Devon) when I suddenly realise I have to be at work (in Devon) in 5 minutes. For some reason it hadn’t previously crossed my mind. Rather than shrug it off, call in sick or work from my firm’s London office (which also never occurs to me) I attempt a mad dash across country via train. I usually get side tracked on my way to the station. When I get there the train station is some bastard offspring between Kings Cross and Bank underground station and is so vast, confusing and futuristic I often have to take several trains just to get to the correct platform. I have no idea how to read a train timetable, nor what time any of the trains are due to leave. I am still trying to figure out if I can somehow make it to Devon in 5 minutes (I’m dangerously optimistic). Plus the station is very futuristic and shiny and white, the layout is insane and sometimes there are planes there too. I always wake up before Making it to my final train (nb - in real life I am quite disorganised, can’t drive due to health reasons, live rurally and have to catch two unreliable buses to get to work. I also used to live in London and had occasionally missed trains I had booked to visit family due to tube delays.)

  2. I am in a museum that is a bit like The Natural History Museum crossed with the V&A (with British Museum elements) and it’s late at night. There are other people there but there is an overwhelmingly sinister and gothic vibe and they won’t interact with me. I am on the top floor (there are many floors - maybe 10) and I have to get out. The exhibits on each floor get creepier and creepier and I have to go through each room before I can descend to the next floor via a sweeping grande staircase. One room in particular freaks me the fuck out and is filled With death masks, horrific taxidermy, older execution tools and creepy bottled-in-formaldehyde deformed animals, with a smattering of truly terrifying tribal artefacts. It’s really dark and musty. If I can find a taxidermy panda that’s brown and white instead of black and white I can immediately leave. The panda scares me but is actually some sort of guardian angel. Sometimes I get out, sometimes I don’t. Bizarrely I had this dream for decades and after living in London for a few years went to the Natural History museum for the first time and the exact panda was there - same pose, same size, brown and white. Had never seen it before in my life, never been there.

  3. I have been cast as a main character in a play or West End musical and just as I’m about to step on stage for the opening night I realise I’ve never even glanced at the script, let alone learned my lines. I have no understudy. I try to figure out if I can somehow wing it whilst my cue to enter the stage is in 3...2...1...

BaggaTDoubleTroubleDoubleG · 29/01/2022 02:34

It is so weird to read descriptions of dreams that I could have written myself.m

Yes to the toilet dreams that involve searching for a functional toilet. Also doing a university course but having not attended any lessons and not knowing what I need to do, and the exams without preparation.

When I was finally pregnant past 12 weeks after a number of miscarriages, I used to have awful recurring dreams that I’d find myself in dangerous situations, like in a boxing match whilst pregnant, where I was putting the baby at risk of harm.

Furries · 29/01/2022 05:18

Top three, no particular order:

Teeth crumbling/falling out
Needing the loo, but they are all filthy or don’t have doors to them
A mixture of losing my handbag/getting on flight and realising suitcase is not packed and still at hotel - with this one, I often wake in a panic until I realise it really was a dream!

I will add a fourth - sometimes have dreams where one of my pets (past or present) have been in danger - don’t like those dreams!

Furries · 29/01/2022 05:25

For all of those with the “gross loos” dreams, so many google references are a bit out there with regards to dark stuff in your life.

I think, and have seen it mentioned, it’s your mind’s way of waking you up as you DO actually need the loo - it stops you from having an accident in the bed!

Furries · 29/01/2022 05:39

And the last is a variation, but it’s always a catastrophic/no way out scenario.

Been a mix of:

Weird gas explosion that goes of simultaneously in my area

Sitting in a car with friends and a tsunami crossed with an ice storm is going to envelope the car

Being in an elevated property and seeing, coming towards it, either planes or tornadoes.

All of the above, have had the feeling of “shit, this is it - I don’t want to die”, whilst also thinking “this is 100% inevitable, I know what’s going to happen in the next 5 seconds and I’m ok with it”.

Needless to say, I’m quite happy when I wake up the next day and realise it was a dream.

Furries · 29/01/2022 05:48

Am thinking this should be a top 5 or more post.

As others have said, I often have the “house is falling down, huge cracks etc’

And the one where it feels like my house, but I keep finding new corridors/stairs/rooms - TBF, I wish this one translated to real life!

TenThousandSpoons · 29/01/2022 06:28

I have the goo in mouth one too. I’d forgotten about it until seeing a couple of people mention it on here but it’s probably the recurring dream I have most often.

TenThousandSpoons · 29/01/2022 06:29

And the finding an extra room I never realised was in my house, although that’s not a nightmare it’s really lovely to find it in the dream!

floridana · 29/01/2022 06:48

I also have a dream where I'm on a plane going on holiday but it never seems to take off. I look out of the window we are just taxiing down the runway, then onto a motorway and then into forest.

I also dream I am driving a car but I'm too close to the steering wheel and can barely move my knees. Then I try to apply the handbrake but no matter how hard I pull it up the car still slides forward or sideways, but I'm so jammed in I can't use the foot brake

I have a recurring dream when I'm in a rollercoaster but there's a drop, or very sharp turn that I hate. It usually a vertical drop when the restraint is just a lap bar that isn't tight enough and I know I'm going to fall out, or sometimes it's a very sharp turn that pulls me roughly to one side and I wake up screaming. The sharp turn dream is often worse than the drop because it seems to bring with it feelings of futile anger and betrayal.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 29/01/2022 07:05

Pressing the brake pedal in the car, but it won't work.
Trying to walk but legs won't move.
