What's your top 3 recurring nightmares?

ImSoMagical · 28/01/2022 14:25

So I had all 3 at once last night 🤣.
1 - I'm barefoot in a public toilet
2 - I'm swimming far out in the ocean terrified of fish and sharks
3 - a tiger and/or lion is in my house.
Think I'll go check up what that means......

Teeth falling out

My grandparents used to live in a huge house, sometimes dream there is another staircase that leaded out of the utility room to a basement or sorts, I walk down, it's dark and I have the biggest sense of fear, I never seen anything after the stairs but always wake up scared

ZittiEBuoni · 28/01/2022 18:33

Oh, you've reminded me of the absolute worst, which is that I murdered someone in the past but got away with it and something happens that brings it all out into the open. I've only had this a handful of times but it is so vivid and the horrible feeling from it hangs around me all morning.

Cleebope2 · 28/01/2022 18:35

I have the sudden realisation that I have an exam with no prep one and the one where I find a secret door or staircase in my house leading to a huge empty labyrinth of rooms one. Also have a delapidated house one. Sometimes have rat and spider ones. I always look up my dreams on dreammoods website and the interpretations are scarily accurate as to what is happening in my life at that time. Sometimes I feel so relieved when I wake up and realise that they are not real that I feel elated for ages. Some intense emotions in my nightmares.

Ghostlyfeet · 28/01/2022 18:37

I have one where I'm on an escalator in a shopping centre and whoever I'm trying to find is on the other escalator going the other way. We wave but I can never find the escalator to get to them...

Also that I've started smoking again

SomethingSuss · 28/01/2022 18:39

My children falling from a really high place and me unable to do anything about it except scream in horror as they plummet towards the earth. It wakes me up every time and it takes me a long time to calm down. I have no nightmares for my own safety, just anything bad at all happening to my kids. I don't think I have three top nightmares, just this one.

Beccatheboo · 28/01/2022 18:40

Having to go to an exam without preparing or (in a similar vein) going on holiday and not having packed.

Realising I have a hidden room under my house - sometimes a lovely unexpected bonus, sometimes I remember I've buried a body there! Or my garden is all flooded and I realise that a body I've buried there is about to be uncovered 😧

A piece of thread is in my gum and no matter how much I pull it, I never reach the end.

(Sorry, 4, but also have lots of wild animal dreams - tigers, lions, foxes trying to attack me.)

igotdemons · 28/01/2022 18:40

1- Needing to desperately dial a number for some reason but hitting the wrong numbers and having to start all over again! 😫
2- Having to enter or exit a room where the ‘door’ is suddenly really tiny, like something out of Alice in Wonderland 😱
3- Using a toilet that is in public, completely open and exposed with no cubicle etc. 😣

😱😱😱

ShowOfHands · 28/01/2022 18:41

Teeth falling out

Not having revised for an exam, in a play and don't know the words, very late for school and in trouble. They all feel the same.

Trying to run and can't or trying to dial a number and the wrong one keeps appearing. They're the same feeling too.

Needing a toilet but they're all in public spaces or absolutely filthy (this is not related to needing the loo irl, it's an anxiety dream).

Packing to move or go on holiday or come home and everything is a mess and I'm late and I can't make it right.

DH falls irrevocably and hopelessly in love with another woman and leaves me.

I'm pregnant. And not happy about it which is odd because while I'm done having babies irl, if I were unexpectedly pregnant, it wouldn't be terrible.

Littleroundsponge · 28/01/2022 18:43
  1. Having to use a toilet with no door and people watching me Blush
  2. DH leaving me for another woman.
3.Family members/close friends dying.
ButterOllocks · 28/01/2022 18:43

I have 90% of these, no shoes, dialing a phone number and having to start over, and the exam one - makes me feel more 'normal'

pradavilla · 28/01/2022 18:45

I have these dreams quite frequently. They are so weird but think they are all anxiety dreams.

Lifts - Usually the floor seems to cave in or it's out of control going up down sides ways 🙈

Witnessing plane crashes I'm never in the plane. But see it crash sometimes in the distance other times very close like I'm lying on beach and it crashes in to the sea right infront of me.

Being chased - someone is after me (no idea why) and I'm running away or hiding from them.

ShowOfHands · 28/01/2022 18:49

I also regularly dream that my brakes have failed. Not at high speed but the car just won't stop. Or it's stopped but then begins to roll and I can't do anything. I also dream I'm driving without a licence or speeding and out of control.

I'm a perfectly competent driver and have never had an accident and I don't speed. I also have a full licence!

Echobelly · 28/01/2022 18:52

They're not quite nightmares, but just weird:

  • Teeth falling out, though when I look at myself my mouth looks normal even though loads of teeth seem to have come out
  • I'm on top of something tall/a tall building and it's wobbling around like mad, sometimes so much so that I'm deposited safely onto the ground
  • Needing to find a loo and the ones I can find are either disgusting or somehow weird and exposed
CantSnapOutOfIt · 28/01/2022 18:53

Really interesting, there are loads here that I have! My most frequent are:
1 - Being on a hitman's list for reasons I never know. He is incredibly clever and I know he'll get me eventually. Lots of chasing around dark office style buildings.
2- Being caught up in a tsunami, trying to get to high ground/a tall sturdy building
3 - Being in a war zone and either being caught and imprisoned or on the run and dodging snipers etc
Jolly soul me!

Beccatheboo · 28/01/2022 18:53

This is such a fascinating thread! It's reassuring to know there are lots of other vivid dreamers out there - my husband very rarely dreams.

I dreamt last night that I had neglected a fish tank; the water had evaporated and the fish were dead or flapping. Other times I dream I've forgotten I have a pond and the fish have turned into terrifying creatures.

I sometimes dream I've forgotten I have gerbils; as well as missing food and water, they have multiplied and there are litters of pups everywhere!

inheritancetrack · 28/01/2022 18:56

Only one, but it's a recurring dream I've had for 20 years. DH and I have killed someone, and buried the body. The site is about to be built on and the body is almost certain to be discovered. Huge terror in the dream about the discovery.

I wake up and am semi convinced that we have killed someone and buried them. I half believe I've buried the memory of this burial. It's like a weight on me half the day. I'm sure I haven't done this, but is it a dream or did we really? It's effing weird.

80sMum · 28/01/2022 18:58

As a child I kept having recurring nightmares about fires: being trapped in a burning building; sitting around a campfire and a burning ember spits out and sets fire to my hair and ribbons; putting my nightie over the fireguard to warm it up before putting it on and it bursts into flames; blowing out birthday candles and the curtains catching fire... and so on. I've no idea where it came from.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 28/01/2022 19:03

@inheritancetrack oh I'm so glad you have that dream as well it's absolutely terrifying I thought it signified something really messed up!!

HalfBrick · 28/01/2022 19:06

Drowning

Living in a doer upper house, really long with a depressing vibe and finding new rooms especially a massive peach 80s bathroom with loads of crap in and a sunken corner bath. Usually need a pee in this one but the toilet doesn't work.

Approaching a roundabout at speed and going over the top and into the air.

Weird thing is I know I'm dreaming in all of them.

Suzysuz · 28/01/2022 19:07

I have to say I'm relieved seeing the toilet ones as I was worried it was just me! It's such a bizarre thing and rarely linked with me actually needing the loo.... what do they mean?
I've had combo's of what has been mentioned:

  • toilet being overflowing, dirty state
  • toilet door low / big gaps so I'm clearly visible
  • or my weirdest,,, the toilet just being out in the open, like in the room to the side and I'm having to go right there in front of people, they're not necessarily watching me and I'm trying to be discrete...
HalfBrick · 28/01/2022 19:13

The teeth ones- I assumed it's because we're asleep and mouth breathing a bit so our teeth get dry and can feel the air so you start dreaming about that?

Weredone · 28/01/2022 19:21

I have all the standard ones about teeth falling out, not being able to wee and I also have;

  1. That I’ve suddenly realised one of my hamsters from childhood aren’t actually dead and have been in the attic in a filthy cage/barely alive/with mouldy food. Sometimes it’s more than one hamster. I find them in various states and it’s awful. A darker variation on this that I get less often is that someone I loved and lost hasn’t completely died or been buried properly and I find the body.
  2. That my dh is having an affair/leaving me- he acts like a completely different person in the dream and says awful things.
  3. The strangest one is that I’m hiding from soldiers/armed men with a small group of people, including children. I know that we will die if we’re caught but I always wake up just as the men find us. I also have dreams about the location/housing blocks of this place, where I’m just walking around trying to find my apartment and child. I saw a photo of some housing blocks- that were I think in Romania -on a Reddit thread about the most depressing places in the world and they matched the building(s) in my dreams exactly!
Weredone · 28/01/2022 19:24

@HalfBrick I get the house ones too but it doesn’t feel like a nightmare- they’re just huge old houses and I’m exploring them

Weredone · 28/01/2022 19:25

@DarleneSnell I can’t believe you have a similar one about your rabbit! I find this one the most upsetting I think!
