What kind of child doesn't like apple crumble?!

Light-hearted, before people bash me over the head for not considering children with sensory issues etc.

DD has a friend over to play. Lovely. I said we'd give the child dinner. I'm making a chilli for everyone. Child says she'll try it but probably won't like it. Ok, I can work with that.

I threw an apple crumble together and was thinking of adding tomatoes and sweetcorn to the rice, do at least she gets something. No. Child does not like tomatoes or apple crumble.

The tomatoes I can understand, but surely everyone like apple crumble?!

I now have fish fingers in the oven. These are apparently acceptable.

I know at least one of mine wouldn't like apple crumble. I don't understand it either though!

Spitspotsput · 09/01/2022 16:59

Can take a bit of getting used to. Better than marmite but worse than ice cream

Comedycook · 09/01/2022 17:00

Chilli and apple crumble is not a great choice for a kid who has been invited over imo. Neither of mine would enjoy that but would probably grin and bear it!

I don’t like cooked fruit and sweetcorn is a straight no.

I also dislike fish fingers.

Blush21 · 09/01/2022 17:00

I’ve never been a huge fan of apple pie or
Crumble. Can be a bit too sharp at times a

Heavymetaldetector · 09/01/2022 17:00

I hate apple crumble! Sooooorryyyyyy. Also my son is like me, all fruit is gross to us. I can't stand thr textures. I like the flavours so I do smoothies etc and we eat plenty of veg but fruit is any form we struggle with. I love rhubarb crumble though! So is rhubarb a fruit or a vegetable or...what is it??? That's a Google for today...

GoodnightGrandma · 09/01/2022 17:01

None of mine eat it, so that’s more for me 😋

Echobelly · 09/01/2022 17:01

It depends - my mum's home-made apple crumble was fairly tart in flavour, so may not go down with every kid. It's also an unusual texture that some kids might not like - I only learned to appreciate my mum's actually fantastic crumbles as an adult!

Peridot1 · 09/01/2022 17:01

Mine wouldn’t. Or the chilli.

He’s now 20.

I did the whole Annabelle Karmel thing when he was a baby. Lots of variety. He gradually reduced what he would eat.

Never liked fruity puddings. Or jam. Or jelly. Or honey. Weird child!

Neilsfavouritechilli · 09/01/2022 17:01

I have never ever liked hot puddings!! Don't know why as they look fun and comforting but nah!

CatAlice · 09/01/2022 17:01

Neither of mine ever liked fruit pie or crumble.
DS1 (25) to this day says it doesn't count as pudding unless chocolate is involved. DS2 (23) is now a real adult because he likes crumble.

Sunflowersinthewind · 09/01/2022 17:01

If you said chocolate ice cream then yeah but apple crumble? No sorry, its not a universally loved pudding

MouseyMoose · 09/01/2022 17:01

I can't stand cooked fruit so apple crumble, apple pie etc are all out for me.

Simonjt · 09/01/2022 17:01

My son doesn’t like cooked fruit, that even includes a banana cooked in chocolate

DollyMixtureLulus · 09/01/2022 17:02

I don’t like chocolate ice cream either Grin

FelicityBob · 09/01/2022 17:02

YABU for making chilli for a visiting child. That’s risky. Crumble though, send it my way

daisydalrymple · 09/01/2022 17:03

I don’t like Apple crumble. I eat fruit, but don’t like any kind of baked or cooked fruit. Don’t like jam, marmalade etc. No sensory issues.
The same goes for my 3 children. They have tried crumbles but also dislike the texture of cooked fruit.
I don’t like chilli either. I just don’t like the texture of any kind of beans. (I do like Heinz 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣).

MajorCarolDanvers · 09/01/2022 17:03

My 13 year old son wont touch crumble of any kind.

There are very few puddings he likes at all.

Deadringer · 09/01/2022 17:04

Oh god i was that child. I eat pretty much everything now, though i still don't like apple crumble. Whenever dc have friends over we do beige stuff, pizza or chicken nuggets, always goes down well and we just have something else.

RagzReturnedUnwrapped · 09/01/2022 17:04

DD doesn't like crumble, or apple pie, or strudel.

actiongirl1978 · 09/01/2022 17:04

My DS 11 would not have eaten a single mouthful of that dinner including the fish fingers. He is VERY picky though and DD would have enjoyed all of what you served without complaint!

viques · 09/01/2022 17:04

Does that mean there is some left over OP? I have custard......

Moppiehen · 09/01/2022 17:04

One of mine isn’t keen because she once had a tummy bug and an apple crumble was the last thing she ate and the first thing back up.

Another dc is the same with macaroni cheese for the same reason.

I still make these dishes for the rest of us.

WheelieBinPrincess · 09/01/2022 17:04

Is this a thinly veiled attempt to bash kids with limited palates who only really like beige food?

Honestly in 16 years of nannying I’ve had LOADS that wouldn’t have eaten chilli followed by apple crumble!

Most are way better by the time I’m finished with them at trying lots of different things but if they had a friend coming over I’d be playing it much safer than chilli and apple crumble!

PiesNotGuys · 09/01/2022 17:04

One of mine would eat all of that and enjoy every bite.

One would eat it and be gracious but probably if pressed would prefer something else.

One wouldn’t eat any of it, wouldn’t know what to say so would basically just go silent and play with cutlery round the edge of the plate until they could reasonably escape.
