What kind of child doesn't like apple crumble?!

Light-hearted, before people bash me over the head for not considering children with sensory issues etc.

DD has a friend over to play. Lovely. I said we'd give the child dinner. I'm making a chilli for everyone. Child says she'll try it but probably won't like it. Ok, I can work with that.

I threw an apple crumble together and was thinking of adding tomatoes and sweetcorn to the rice, do at least she gets something. No. Child does not like tomatoes or apple crumble.

The tomatoes I can understand, but surely everyone like apple crumble?!

I now have fish fingers in the oven. These are apparently acceptable.

My dd likes the crumble and the fruit, but not together! I always do a little dish with just some crumble to cook on its own and she has stewed apple in a separate bowl. She’s always been a bit funny about different textures together.

Ahhhhhbisto · 09/01/2022 17:14

Ah yes! Feeding other people's children! I now ask parents ahead of time for their childs favourite meal and that's what we have.

I do love chilli and crumble though Grin

Spitspotsput · 09/01/2022 17:14

Damn you. I now need some apple crumble and custard!

I'm a teacher in an infant school and loads òf kids don't eat apple crumble. I don't get it!

namechange30455 · 09/01/2022 17:15

How old is the friend?

I think YWBU to serve chilli and apple crumble if it was going to make you stressed if the kid didn't like their tea tbh. Mine do eat chilli but I wouldn't serve it to their friends unless I knew they ate it, and it's one of those things that can be quite variable in recipe, spiciness etc so if they're quite little it can put them off if it's not like the one their parents make. And I don't like apple crumble, not sure if my kids have ever had it (I've never served it to them!)

furbabymama87 · 09/01/2022 17:15

Kids can be fussy. If they are, something that looks like mush that they're unsure of, isn't going to be eaten. If they tried it they'd probably like it.

PurpleParrotfish · 09/01/2022 17:16

I have one fussy child and one who eats most things and will try anything, but even he isn’t a fan of apple crumble. I think it used to be a staple for families / school meals but now a fair number of kids wouldn’t be familiar with it.

Frazzled2207 · 09/01/2022 17:16

Neither of mine would.
I think cooked/stewed fruit is an acquired taste

GerbilCurse · 09/01/2022 17:16

I'm pleased to find so many fellow people On this thread who dislike cooked fruit.

I like pretty much most fruits when raw but cooked/stewed fruit is not my thing at all. As an adult I'd grin and bear it if served and refusal would offend but I wouldn't have eaten apple crumble as a child.

I wouldn't have eaten chilli as a child either as couldn't handle anything remotely spicy.

Thiswayorthatway · 09/01/2022 17:16

I have never liked apple crumble

Hellocatshome · 09/01/2022 17:17

DS2 doesn't like jelly, ice cream, apple crumble, any type of fruit pie, cake or chocolate. I dont know where I got him from but I dont think he can be mine.

llamakoala · 09/01/2022 17:17

Lol, not everyone likes the taste/texture of apples.

When I was a kid I wouldn’t eat apples at all. I think it may have a lot to do with the tastes we are are exposed to at home (I was only ever given bananas). Maybe the child is in a similar situation.

As an adult, the only apple based dish I eat is my MIL’s apple crumble. The way she makes it makes the apple not taste too bad. I don’t really like fruit that much, so my heart sinks when I go somewhere and the only dessert on offer is fruit based dessert Grin apart from MIL’s apple crumble Grin

MrsPotatoHead22 · 09/01/2022 17:17

I love apple crumble and so does my 4 & 6 year old..

DartmoorChef · 09/01/2022 17:17

When I'm cooking for kids on their school residentials we have a set menu .Monday is spag bol followed by apple crumble with ice cream. I would say 25% of the kids want plain pasta with grated cheese and just a bowl of custard.

DaveGrohl · 09/01/2022 17:17

I’m sorry but neither of my children (age 11 and 9) would eat apple crumble. Or tomatoes in rice. Or indeed chilli if there was any spice or identifiable vegetables.

Redglitter · 09/01/2022 17:17

I have to agree with you - apple crumble & custard absolute heaven.

My brother won't touch it. He won't eat hot fruit of any description 🙄

Tal45 · 09/01/2022 17:18

Stewed apple is pretty sharp, when you're a child your taste buds are different so I guess it's just is too sharp for many. I'm not that big a fan of stewed fruit, although I like a lot of fruit.

llamakoala · 09/01/2022 17:18

Just to clarify - the only fruit I was given at home were bananas. I didn’t exist solely on bananas.

saltandpepper234 · 09/01/2022 17:18

Not the point of the thread but YABU to serve crumble after chilli. Those two courses don’t go together at all.

I love crumble but I haven’t eaten chilli since I moved in with my partner three years ago because he hates it and cba with different dinners. Shame because I love chilli 😅

WineIsMyCarb · 09/01/2022 17:19

Mine don't like spaghetti hoops. WTF?! Can I return them for some real children?

Parker231 · 09/01/2022 17:20

We’ve only ever prepared one meal - no separate meals for DC’s. However when their friends were over I usually did pizza and ice cream so that everyone was happy.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 09/01/2022 17:21

Neither of mine would eat apple crumble.
Similar to how neither of mine would eat toad in the hole but would happily eat sausage and Yorkshire puddings.

MrsJBaptiste · 09/01/2022 17:21

Odd I know, but one of mine doesn't like biscuits/cake/puddings/chocolate but will eat KFC/McDonald's/Nandos all day long.

He's now 18 and will clearly never have a sweet tooth!

NoWordForFluffy · 09/01/2022 17:21

Mine eat pizza but can't have ice cream, as it's too far up the milk ladder (they're at melted cheese, hence pizza being OK)!
jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 09/01/2022 17:22

i wouldn't give a child chilli. I definitely wouldn't have eaten it either.

Apple crumble - yes please!
