What kind of child doesn't like apple crumble?!

Light-hearted, before people bash me over the head for not considering children with sensory issues etc.

DD has a friend over to play. Lovely. I said we'd give the child dinner. I'm making a chilli for everyone. Child says she'll try it but probably won't like it. Ok, I can work with that.

I threw an apple crumble together and was thinking of adding tomatoes and sweetcorn to the rice, do at least she gets something. No. Child does not like tomatoes or apple crumble.

The tomatoes I can understand, but surely everyone like apple crumble?!

I now have fish fingers in the oven. These are apparently acceptable.

Why spoil rice with tomatoes and sweetcorn 😀😉

I love apple crumble though

CeleriacOfTheNight · 09/01/2022 17:04

I hated crumble as a child.

I can eat it now, but I still wouldn't choose it.

FrenchFancie · 09/01/2022 17:05

That would have been my horror meal as I child i would have struggled to eat anything!
I was super fussy and hated anything spicy so Chili was out.
I hated cooked apples so would have struggled with the crumble. To be honest I still hate apple crumble….

No sorry. I don’t like chilli really or crumble ( would eat both if someone else made though), but as a child wouldn’t have.

Would love a fish finger sandwich though, haven’t had one in years.

Snow1n · 09/01/2022 17:05

Nope one of mine wouldnt eat anything you've mentioned. The other would eat the chilli and plain rice but not the apple crumble or fish fingers.

Havilland · 09/01/2022 17:05

I hated it as a child as I did many other things that I went into my adulthood not bothering to try again until much older and discovering that I liked it!

cloudtree · 09/01/2022 17:05

Mine would inhale both chilli and crumble. It’s just eggs you’re used to I guess. We have crumble most weeks for pudding after Sunday lunch. Generally not straight apple, their favourite is rhubarb apple and strawberry but I throw in whatever fruit I’ve pulled out of the freezer.

Dutchesss · 09/01/2022 17:06

Try separating it. Rice with salad and chili on the side. If they only eat rice that's fine for one meal.
A lot of people aren't keen on cooked fruit. Try the crumble with some custard or ice cream and it will usually be eaten. Call it something plain like crumbled biscuit.

Sunshineandrainbow · 09/01/2022 17:07

My Dd hates any cooked fruit. Crumble is my fav!

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 09/01/2022 17:07

None of mine like chips. We're from Manchester they are practically a food group here. Wonderful weirdo's.

Pillowaddict · 09/01/2022 17:08

Neither of mine would eat chilli or crumble, anything remotely spicy doesn't go down well, and cooked fruit is a big no no!

ExtremelyDetermined · 09/01/2022 17:10

Neither of mine like it (aged 16 and 18). They like chilli although one prefers it mild.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 09/01/2022 17:10

My youngest wouldn’t eat chilli or crumble 🤷‍♀️

DementedPanda · 09/01/2022 17:10

Mine won't touch custard with a barge pole. Hate most desserts. The oldest will have a trifle... without the jelly and custard and fruit 🙄 I've given up now. We just don't do puddings in our house.

The chilli and rice they would have given a go, even if they didn't like it they would be too polite to say.

NoddyMcdoddy · 09/01/2022 17:10

I love apple crumble now, hated it as a kid.

Changechangychange · 09/01/2022 17:11

DS would have eaten the chilli until he was about 3, but now he is 5 he seems to have decided to only eat jacket potatoes and pasta-based dishes. It seems to be down to starting school and suddenly getting some options - at nursery they just ate what was put in front of them. Even stuff he used to really love, like daal, he now turns his nose up at.

I am hoping he will get more flexible again as he gets older. DH and I are still making normal meals, so he is eating a lot of cheese sandwiches (what he has if he refuses the main meal).

LethargicActress · 09/01/2022 17:12

I didn’t like cooked mushy apples as a child, although the crumble bit makes up for it now that I’m an adult. Still wouldn’t bother with apple pie though.

PiesNotGuys · 09/01/2022 17:12

It’s not about what you are used to , @cloudtree

I serve a roast dinner and pudding every Sunday. Today it’s slow cooked brisket, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, roast parsnips with orange and sage, mulled red cabbage, sprouts and carrots with gravy. It is followed up by an apricot and almond tart today but was apple and blueberry crumble last week.

The child that is awkward round my table ate all of the above including the sprouts and cabbage, refused to eat the apricot and almond tart. She would completely refuse to touch chilli, apple crumble, or fish fingers.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 09/01/2022 17:13

If I was inviting an adult to dinner I’d go out of my way to make sure I was serving foods they liked and enjoyed. I don’t really understand why some people think they’re doing you a favour by offering to give your child dinner but then whinge when they don’t want to make something the child actually likes.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2022 17:13

By the time she was doing play dates, mine wouldn't have eaten chilli, fish, chips, mash or any green veg (except marsh samphire. I was doomed to be an MN mum foreverGrin)

Not sure about crumble... I think she'd have eaten the fruit and topping separately, but not custard.

ABitOfAShitShow · 09/01/2022 17:13

When I was little I didn’t like cooked fruit so would only eat the crumble off the top!

MaryAndHerNet · 09/01/2022 17:13

My dad was proud of his apple crumble when I were a wee un. It were bloody horrible. All burnt and vile on the top and apples hard and sour as anything.
He got very upset if people pointed these issues out, so no one did again and he was certain everyone loved it.
I hate crumble.

Get a proper pie and stop posing about.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/01/2022 17:13

@Peridot1

Mine wouldn’t. Or the chilli.

He’s now 20.

I did the whole Annabelle Karmel thing when he was a baby. Lots of variety. He gradually reduced what he would eat.

Never liked fruity puddings. Or jam. Or jelly. Or honey. Weird child!

Sounds like DS. Amazing range of foods when little. Now he's 7, he has a very, very limited diet (he has his ASD assessment next month).

Chilli would probably be eaten by DD (not with sweetcorn though), but neither would eat apple crumble!

Tal45 · 09/01/2022 17:13

I home cook nearly every night but if kids are coming over then tea is out the freezer. My son doesn't like apple crumble, or chilli for that matter and isn't a big fan of rice but will eat it. He'll eat most veggies, sprouts, brocolli, etc but doesn't like sauces of any sort or fruit except bananas.

ComDummings · 09/01/2022 17:13

My 2 hate apple crumble and one of them is the kind to try any food once. The other is a fussy little so and so.
