What kind of child doesn't like apple crumble?!

Light-hearted, before people bash me over the head for not considering children with sensory issues etc.

DD has a friend over to play. Lovely. I said we'd give the child dinner. I'm making a chilli for everyone. Child says she'll try it but probably won't like it. Ok, I can work with that.

I threw an apple crumble together and was thinking of adding tomatoes and sweetcorn to the rice, do at least she gets something. No. Child does not like tomatoes or apple crumble.

The tomatoes I can understand, but surely everyone like apple crumble?!

I now have fish fingers in the oven. These are apparently acceptable.

I always did a ‘buffet’ type thing of various foods when we had children visiting.

You would be surprised how many ate things they said they didn’t like or their parents said they wouldn’t eat!

Delatron · 09/01/2022 17:38

I think you have to play it safe with visiting children. Chilli definitely isn’t safe. Apple crumble mine would eat and I think I’ve served it on play dates before! But it’s not really the safest option.

I’ve given up a bit now and just do safe foods like pizza (though one of DS’s friends doesn’t even like pizza!). I often ask DS what his friends like best to eat and serve that. Plus ice cream.

I don’t think it’s time to serve your family favourites like chilli.

Hoppinggreen · 09/01/2022 17:38

I hate cooked apples in anything so I would not eat it.
In fact neither would my kids

My 3 (now teens) have always loved chilli and apple
Crumble!

I do think that very few people
Have a ‘proper’ pudding nowadays. Partly because people don’t have the time to make them and partly because of the healthy eating crew making it that hot stodgy puddings are the work of the devil.

You can’t win with others kids. DS2 has a friend who only eats plain pasta and cheese and choc/sweets and pretty much nothing else. He has another friend who will eat all sorts, prawn sarnies, Chinese dumplings and other stuff that DS also likes.

I generally used to do something like jacket potatoes when friends came over as could do a variety of toppings (including chilli!!) so most kids could find something that the would eat!

Hemingwayscatz · 09/01/2022 17:39

DH hates fruit and always has, it’s a texture issue so he wouldn’t eat it even as a child. He likes the crumble part but hates the apples.

BrieAndChilli · 09/01/2022 17:39

I also used to get ‘requests’ one of DDs friends loved my fish pie, DS friends would want Mexican.

ScottChegg · 09/01/2022 17:42

My ds, now an adult, doesn't like most puddings (including apple crumble) and even the majority of CAKES. Shock

I am not entirely convinced that there wasn't a mix up at the hospital. Grin

InTheNightWeWillWish · 09/01/2022 17:42

Apple crumble is the second worst dessert. I do not get why people want it. First worst dessert is creme brûlée. I have no idea why they feature on nearly every menu.

I love apples. I just don’t like people messing around with apples. That means no cooked apples, no apple juice, no apple sauce. I’m not even that big a fan of sticky toffee apples.

rookiemere · 09/01/2022 17:43

DS wouldn't have eaten that as he didn't eat chilli or apple crumble. Clearly all down to my crap parenting < as that's the subtext of this thread>.

I don't make apple crumble, when DM made it when young there was barely any sugar added to the apples or the crumble so it was dry and tart, oh and her custard is watery and disgusting. Therefore I don't see it as a treat or enjoyable - personally I'd rather just eat an apple. So I've never made it, hence why DS probably wouldn't eat it.

But when visiting DCs were at ours I'd ask them what they liked or go for pasta or pizza, I didn't make a big song and dance about it. I told DS that if he was offered something he didn't like he should just say thanks very much for the lovely food, but he was quite full, so I hope he didn't have "amusing " threads written about him.

First worst dessert is creme brûlée

This is possibly the worst thing that I've ever read on MN.

DementedPanda · 09/01/2022 17:44

@WineIsMyCarb none of mine will eat beans, hoops etc... they are definitely faulty! Would make like so much easier if they'd have beans on toast once in a while after a late activity.

RonniePickering · 09/01/2022 17:46

Neither of mine would eat apple crumble. Or spotted dick, or jam roly poly.

Mine drive me mad, one will not have anything fizzy, not a bad thing, and the other will have no custard, cream, rice pudding, milk, butter or eggs.

LyraVega · 09/01/2022 17:53

Yep I'm in agreement with everyone else I'm afraid - I hate crumble and have since I was a child! I just cannot get on with any cooked fruit its just horrible to me!

My worst nightmare of a dessert would be apple crumble or apple pie topped with custard ... bleh!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/01/2022 17:55

He could have been hit on the head with an apple once and that has put him off.

I think Isaac Newton was the same as was William Tell's son Walter.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 09/01/2022 17:56

Dd1 is 10 wouldn't touch the crumble (well she might to be polite) but would wolf down the chilli. She's weird though. Eats almost anything but not apple crumble/pie/strudel & not eggs.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/01/2022 17:57

I blame the parents

Aimee1987 · 09/01/2022 17:58

I now have to make an apple crumble

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 09/01/2022 17:58

I don’t like apple crumble/pie etc., unless I have made it myself, and am absolutely positive there are no bits of core in it. I think I got a sharp piece of core stuck in my throat once, and it has put me off.

MsTSwift · 09/01/2022 17:59

Sadly seems some kids only seem to eat processed food 🙄 must be so unhealthy

simonthedog · 09/01/2022 18:00

People who don't like different foods mixed together. Like my DD1

Yeah. Apple crumble so healthy
RoyalFamilyFan · 09/01/2022 18:00

@MsTSwift yep. Chicken nuggets, chips, pizza and fish fingers. Explains all those children's menus though.

RoyalFamilyFan · 09/01/2022 18:01

@RedHot22 apple crumble is a fairly healthy pudding, if homemade.
