What kind of child doesn't like apple crumble?!

Light-hearted, before people bash me over the head for not considering children with sensory issues etc.

DD has a friend over to play. Lovely. I said we'd give the child dinner. I'm making a chilli for everyone. Child says she'll try it but probably won't like it. Ok, I can work with that.

I threw an apple crumble together and was thinking of adding tomatoes and sweetcorn to the rice, do at least she gets something. No. Child does not like tomatoes or apple crumble.

The tomatoes I can understand, but surely everyone like apple crumble?!

I now have fish fingers in the oven. These are apparently acceptable.

I think one of mine eats crumble, not sure which one. It's also possible both or neither do. I think DS2 says he likes it but then never eats it.

DS1 wouldn't eat chilli or tomatoes.

One of mine wouldn't eat apple crumble !!!
Crazy ha ha

RedHot22 · 09/01/2022 18:02
@RedHot22 apple crumble is a fairly healthy pudding, if homemade.
As is a homemade chicken nugget

DH doesn’t like rhubarb crumble. Now that’s just weird.

RoyalFamilyFan · 09/01/2022 18:03

@RedHot22 most people I know who have apple crumble have it homemade. It is very easy to make. I don't know anyone who makes homemade chicken nuggets. If they do from proper whole chicken, then yes that would be healthy.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 09/01/2022 18:04

I like crumble but cooked apples are a bit too tart for me. Neither of my kids would like it either.

Roselilly36 · 09/01/2022 18:04

DS1 was a fussy eater, DS2 would eat anything, rollmops, seafood, steak, English mustard the lot. I don’t think he ever refused any food type, he would have really enjoyed a chilli & apple crumble.

stingofthebutterfly · 09/01/2022 18:05

None of my 3 teenagers like apple crumble. Or chilli. Or rice with tomatoes and sweetcorn.

I think they're bonkers.

Chicken nuggets or pizza is the only safe bet when we have guests.

Tricked2003 · 09/01/2022 18:05

DD age 16 doesn't!!! She doesn't like cake, crumbles, puddings either!!!

I often have doubts that she is my child...........she only likes pink iced donuts and an occasional pancake. For her birthday we put candles in a watermelon.

Beamur · 09/01/2022 18:05

I would happily come round your house for tea. My DD on the other hand would go home completely hungry as she eats none of this, you will have ruined the one part she would eat (rice) by putting anything else in it!
Plain food only for unfamiliar children. Mine won't even eat pizza...melted cheese is not an acceptable food.
Pasta is my go to for kids.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 09/01/2022 18:06

I don't like chilli either 🤣

LettertoHermoine · 09/01/2022 18:06

None of mine would eat it. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Hubby with eat it. No sensory issues here either.

llamakoala · 09/01/2022 18:07

@Aimee1987

I now have to make an apple crumble
😂😂😂
converseandjeans · 09/01/2022 18:07

I think you're expecting too much of a visiting child. Most people do something generic like fish fingers or pizza.

It sounds like you deliberately put stuff in the rice to make a point. Who puts sweet corn and tomatoes into plain rice? Then got miffed when visiting child wasn't keen.

Neither of mine would eat crumble or chilli. I'd hope you might try to find them something to eat if they were with you - maybe just toast or something.

daisyjgrey · 09/01/2022 18:08

I don't like apple crumble, never have. I also don't like chilli 😬

I'll see myself out.

Huntswomanonthemove · 09/01/2022 18:10

I think fruit crumble is probably something you grow into, in your teens.

aSofaNearYou · 09/01/2022 18:10

I love crumble but I think kids are more likely to like one's with red berries, might be a better gateway!

TooMuchSugar22 · 09/01/2022 18:11

My dcs do. But dsc doesn't. Won't even entertain trying it.
They do also have chilli mild. I tell them it's special bolognese and they can have with rice. If I say chilli for tea, they say yuk I don't like chilli. If I say oh OK then special bolognese with rice. Oh yeah well have that.

See also 'I don't like turkey' OK have chicken. Ie turkey. Yes that's fine

I don't like beef.. OK then have this dark chicken.. Ohh yum!

LavenderAskew · 09/01/2022 18:11

The proper question here is what kind of lunatic considers putting sweetcorn and tomatoes or throws together apple crumble to a child who's come over to play?

Isn't the law you make (shop bought) pizza?

FuzzyPuffling · 09/01/2022 18:11

Apple crumble is bloody lovely...unless you have put cinnamon in it, when it becomes instantly inedible.

RedHot22 · 09/01/2022 18:11

Yes @RoyalFamilyFan. Apple crumble is easy to make but does have a considerable amount of sugar and fat.

We did make our own chicken nuggets when they were little. My kids made them themselves. Chicken breast, dipped in egg and rolled in crushed cornflakes and baked in the oven. They loved them Smile

PuppyMonkey · 09/01/2022 18:12

I detest cooked apples and stewed fruit of any kind. Too sweet and icky. I like the crumble part though.

LongestBedtimeStoryEver · 09/01/2022 18:12

None of mine would eat any of that - it might kill one of them who has a severe bean allergy but I guess that’s something the other mum would have mentioned 😂.
The toddler may have tried it, but I have 2 fussy older kids - one “normal” fussy and one “SEN eating disorder” fussy

Matbest · 09/01/2022 18:14

I really want an apple crumble now.

Greydogs123 · 09/01/2022 18:14

Cooking for other people’s kids is a nightmare. I now make either fish fingers or chicken nuggets and waffles, or sausage and mash. Those are the only things that every child who comes will definitely eat. I’ve deduced it’s not necessarily fussiness, it’s just my spag bol, shepherds pie etc doesn’t taste like the one they get at home.
