What kind of child doesn't like apple crumble?!

Light-hearted, before people bash me over the head for not considering children with sensory issues etc.

DD has a friend over to play. Lovely. I said we'd give the child dinner. I'm making a chilli for everyone. Child says she'll try it but probably won't like it. Ok, I can work with that.

I threw an apple crumble together and was thinking of adding tomatoes and sweetcorn to the rice, do at least she gets something. No. Child does not like tomatoes or apple crumble.

The tomatoes I can understand, but surely everyone like apple crumble?!

I now have fish fingers in the oven. These are apparently acceptable.

Apple crumble is the food of the gods.

I only have one and he would probably eat gravel if it had sugar on it.

MrsJBaptiste · 09/01/2022 17:22

@saltandpepper234

Not the point of the thread but YABU to serve crumble after chilli. Those two courses don’t go together at all.

I love crumble but I haven’t eaten chilli since I moved in with my partner three years ago because he hates it and cba with different dinners. Shame because I love chilli 😅

I was going to say the same thing! A chilli followed by crumble sounds random but I have no idea why...

Different families have different meals
I suspect your DC may not like what the visiting child’s Mum cooks.

Neither of mine would eat any of that. They're fussy little buggers! However the youngest will actually try things, whereas the oldest will happily starve until she can access 'safe' food again.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/01/2022 17:23

One of mine doesn't like...

  • potatoes in most forms, including chips.
  • strawberry flavoured things, including jam, ice cream and yoghurt
  • tomatoes (although pasta sauce is ok)
  • not to keen on bread items
  • cheese (except grated on pasta and pizza)

She would eat chilli and apple crumble though. And sea food, steak, most vegetables, curry cypriot meze etc... the more exotic the better...

godmum56 · 09/01/2022 17:23

i wouldn't eat chilli. Can't digest beans and spicy food upsets my stomach too. I like crumble the way i make it with eating apples and really sugary buttery crumble. Hate (aways have) crumble made with cooking apples and a dry top.....sorry.

RedHot22 · 09/01/2022 17:25

Mine would eat apples when younger but probably not apple crumble as would not be used to the apple being cooked (we don’t have dessert)

itsgettingweird · 09/01/2022 17:25

My ds doesn't eat any puddings like that!

Chocolate trifle, chocolate brownies and ice cream is all he'll eat!

He's 17 and still doesn't. Even cake unless it's a chocolate muffin gets left Confused

itsgettingweird · 09/01/2022 17:27

He wouldn't eat chilli either. Or rice that wasn't plain!

When he has rice he has plain rice and meat and then leas in a separate bowl HmmGrin

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 09/01/2022 17:27

DD claims it's her favourite, but she actually just eats the fruit and custard and leaves the crumble. Strangely resistant to the idea of just having cooked fruit and custard, always complains about it but then gobbles it up. Kids huh!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 09/01/2022 17:27

Ds4 doesn't like it at all. He can smell it on people hours after they've eaten it apparently 😐 he does have autism and spd though!

Kitkat151 · 09/01/2022 17:27

None of my 3 GD would eat any type of crumble

Attictroll · 09/01/2022 17:28

I make a lot of crumbles ds 9 picks any apple I sneak in out. Will do any crumble but apple. He would have tried the chilli - loves rice but would have rejected yours due to the sweetcorn or just picked it out if hungry enough

JaninaDuszejko · 09/01/2022 17:29

I think some children get even fussier when they are at other people's houses. We had friends of DDs who wanted cheddar on their pizza because they'd never seen unmelted mozzerella before (we make our own pizzas because DD was allergic to milk as a small child and still refuses to eat cheese) and one friend ate absolutely nothing although at least her parents had warned us that would happen so we didn't worry.

Having said that DBro doesn't like apple crumble although does eat it when visiting someone else's house (because he's polite).

pictish · 09/01/2022 17:29

Fruit crumble a regular here…all eat it. It was a mainstay when I was growing up.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 09/01/2022 17:29

He won't eat fish fingers either, even in a sandwich with tomato sauce.

CaptainChannel · 09/01/2022 17:30

I hate cooked fruit. I'm not a child but I certainly hated it when I was and still hate it now!

SugarMiceInTheRain · 09/01/2022 17:31

I have one child who loves it, one who'd try to eat it if put in front of him, but wouldn't enjoy it, and one who has sensory issues and a severely limited palate and wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft bargepole! So not a safe option in my book.

PinkSyCo · 09/01/2022 17:32

I think you probably chose two of the unsafest foods possible to cook for a child you didn’t know OP. Fish fingers and chips or pizza and ice cream for pudding next time. Nice and easy and they’ll think you’re the best cook ever!

CrumpledCrumpet · 09/01/2022 17:32

One of mine would have hoovered up that entire meal, the other wouldn’t have touched a morsel.

For play date tea, I normally do pizza and veg sticks (veg sticks normally uneaten but it show willing on my part), and even that sometimes gets rejected.

Badabingbadabum · 09/01/2022 17:34

My dc don't like Alphabites!

ApolloandDaphne · 09/01/2022 17:34

One of mine has always hated crumble, apple or otherwise.

MyGreenTutu · 09/01/2022 17:35

I think a lot of children wouldn't even know what an apple crumble was so they might feel worried about it.
When we were having primary aged kids over for tea I would do pizza, cheesy pasta, fishfingers and chips or sausages and chips (giving the visitor the choice) - followed by vanilla icecream with sprinkles or maybe chocolate mousse. This didn't resemble the diet we would eat as a family in any way, but just seemed easiest. Most of it could just sit in the freezer until it was chosen.

RoyalFamilyFan · 09/01/2022 17:37

@Comedycook

Chilli and apple crumble is not a great choice for a kid who has been invited over imo. Neither of mine would enjoy that but would probably grin and bear it!
I think it is fine. But then I hate the idea that kids just eat fish fingers and chicken nuggets.
RandomDent · 09/01/2022 17:37

I’ve never liked any crumbles. Still don’t. I’d have had pie though.
