What kind of child doesn't like apple crumble?!

Light-hearted, before people bash me over the head for not considering children with sensory issues etc.

DD has a friend over to play. Lovely. I said we'd give the child dinner. I'm making a chilli for everyone. Child says she'll try it but probably won't like it. Ok, I can work with that.

I threw an apple crumble together and was thinking of adding tomatoes and sweetcorn to the rice, do at least she gets something. No. Child does not like tomatoes or apple crumble.

The tomatoes I can understand, but surely everyone like apple crumble?!

I now have fish fingers in the oven. These are apparently acceptable.

My daughter had a friend who turned her nose up at any food we served. It transpired that because we lived within 5 minutes of a McDonald's and her mum wouldn't buy McDonald's that she thought we'd run over to McDonald's to buy her a dinner if she didn't like what we served up.

Oh dear. I mentioned to her mum that she had told me she didn't like sausages and beans so hadn't eaten.

Oops! 😎

Both of mine would eat the chilli, but wouldn't entertain the rice (we have it with wraps instead now so they can make their own "burrito"). And none of us, DH and I included, would eat the crumble.

If I'm going to have dessert it better be a hot brownie or sticky toffee pudding. DC more than happy with an ice lolly 🤷🏼‍♀️

DD tends to hate traditional food like Sunday dinners, fruit puddings, most meat. Things that are often served at family or friends houses for tea.

Yet give her Thai, Chinese, Indian, Italian or sushi even and she’s happy. I’m not sure what part of the world her soul is from but it’s definitely spicy

To me it’s the texture where the apple bit and the crumble bit meet. Eve’s pudding is even worse with the sponge/ apple interface.
And I’m not great on custard (or gravy)
Deconstructed apple crumble with ice cream in a separate bowl sounds great though

OK. I’m weird, (and was brought up in the days when you ate what you were given or it reappeared at the following meal)

Lots of kids don't eat chilli. Mine love it however seem to be unusual among their friends. I didn't think I'd like tomatoes on rice either - cold tomatoes in hot rice? Or do you mean tinned, still a no from me. Dc don't like any sort of cooked fruit puddings or stodgy puddings so wouldn't care for crumble. For a play date I serve pizza, veg sticks and ice cream

RoyalFamilyFan · 10/01/2022 11:45

Chilli and rice is such normal food.
No wonder kids menus in pubs and cafes are so dire.

2 out of 3 out of my children wouldn't eat it. One hates cooked Apple's and the other would eat blackberry and Apple but not plain apple

This child is 9. I've had her on umpteen play dates and taken her on holiday before (camping) so know her fairly well. She has a dairy intolerance so that cuts out pizza, ice cream and quite a few other 'safe' options.

So you were going to feed the crumble WITHOUT custard?!!! YABU!!!

I cook for scout camp and last time did chilli and jacket potatoes. I would out of 90 Kids about 3/4 had some chilli.

I would have sent DH to the corner shop for Elmlea, if that helps? As she didn't want any, everyone else had it with custard. I'm not a barbarian.

I often work lunch duty at our primary school and crumbles tend to be the most traditionally "binned" puddings, especially among the littles. They'd rather have jellies, cakes or biscuits.
