So was just looking at where Morcambe is, whilst watching the shambolic Spurs game. And was surprised to see Carlisle is in England... I would have bet my DH life on it being in Scotland Confused

Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

No. That would come as a surprise to Carlisle.

Thomas Carlyle was Scottish. Perhaps you have the man and the place confused?

Somechance · 09/01/2022 15:41

Yes . It is just to the far left, take a sharp right at Brigadoon ,straight ahead to Carlisle.

Ratched · 09/01/2022 15:42

I'm betting you're from Cornwall in Wales 🙂

I would bet that she has never heard of Thomas Carlyle.
BashfulClam · 09/01/2022 15:42

When I drove there from all the way down in the South West, I was bloody glad it wasn't. I was knackered.

Not recommended to drive there and only stop once!!

MintyGreenDream · 09/01/2022 15:42

Have you ever met anyone from Carlisle OP?

AdditionalCharacter · 09/01/2022 15:49

Definitely in England.

I always thought Thirsk was in Scotland until I drove through it in Yorkshire.

bordermidgebite · 09/01/2022 15:49

Berwick on the east side is more easily confused - it's England but plays in the Scottish football and the historic county of Berwickshire is Scotland

CSJobseeker · 09/01/2022 15:52

We all have our blind spots!

My UK geography is pretty good (travelled and moved around a lot) but, embarrassingly, for at least 10 years I assumed that Wigan was by the sea, because I had heard of The Road to Wigan Pier, and only seaside towns have piers, right?

I live up north, no excuse whatsoever for not twigging that Wigan was inland Grin

I used to think Dover was near Bath! When I say used to, I only realised about 18 months ago. Geography has never been my strong suit.

rwalker · 09/01/2022 15:54

Imkindreally · 09/01/2022 15:57

Currently on a train from Edinburgh to London and went through Carlisle - before today if I’d have guessed I’d have said the same Blush

RampantIvy · 09/01/2022 15:57

I have been to Carlisle and loved it. Then there is the very scenic Settle to Carlisle railway.

Does everyone know where Settle is without looking at a map?

dementedpixie · 09/01/2022 15:57

It's kinda just over the border so fairly close to Scotland
