Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

So was just looking at where Morcambe is, whilst watching the shambolic Spurs game. And was surprised to see Carlisle is in England... I would have bet my DH life on it being in Scotland Confused

Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

Gardenwoe · 09/01/2022 16:01

@AdditionalCharacter

Definitely in England.

I always thought Thirsk was in Scotland until I drove through it in Yorkshire.

@AdditionalCharacter - are you mixing Thirsk with Thurso? Off topic but Thirsk is a lovely market town

When I was wee I thought it was in Scotland too! I'm in Scotland and would see road signs pointing to Carlisle, and all the other places on the signs were Scottish, so just assumed.

Dunno what your excuse is. Grin

It’s got one of those names that isn’t where it should be, like County Durham really should be in Ireland & even though I know it isn’t I’m still only half convinced Grin

CSJobseeker · 09/01/2022 16:03

@RampantIvy

I have been to Carlisle and loved it. Then there is the very scenic Settle to Carlisle railway.

Does everyone know where Settle is without looking at a map?

Down the road from my house.
AndNobbyDancing · 09/01/2022 16:04

Where did you watch the Spurs game??

ajandjjmum · 09/01/2022 16:04

Very close to the Scottish border though.

DD and DH spent their last night in Carlisle when they did Hadrian's Wall, finishing in Bowness on Solway.

theNumbersStation · 09/01/2022 16:05

Carlisle used to be Scottish.

If it was 1091 you’d have been right.

Your Wullie robbed it. Grin

Blousesandhouses22 · 09/01/2022 16:05

I can @rampantivy but I doubt most people can. Unfortunately a lot of people don't see a UK holiday as a holiday and therefore haven't travelled much. A great shame as we have a lovely country. The Settle area is one of my favourites.

AdditionalCharacter · 09/01/2022 16:06

@Chocolateteabag possibly. Although Thirsk does sound Scottish.

theNumbersStation · 09/01/2022 16:07

Probably 🥴

Gardenwoe · 09/01/2022 16:09

@MustDust

It's Morecambe
Oh god sorry....

I think most people who live in Yorkshire probably can? And probably those in Cumbria or North Lancs too.
Covidclaire · 09/01/2022 16:09

@bordermidgebite

Berwick on the east side is more easily confused - it's England but plays in the Scottish football and the historic county of Berwickshire is Scotland
Hasn’t the border moved either side of Bewick a fair few times?

Maybe it's because of Robert Carlyle...

WeAllHaveWings · 09/01/2022 16:10

If it helps you feel better Carlisle was briefly in Scotland.

Gardenwoe · 09/01/2022 16:10

@AndNobbyDancing

Wink at risk of getting arrested... streamed it
OP posts:
Gardenwoe · 09/01/2022 16:11

It's definitely because of Robert Carlisle...

CSJobseeker · 09/01/2022 16:11

Yes, the Scottish border was somewhat variable for a few hundred years.

The lawlessness that resulted in that area led to the Border Reivers, who are interesting to read about if you're into history. The Border Reivers were generally a bit further north than Carlisle, but not by much.

theNumbersStation · 09/01/2022 16:11

You are correct CovidClaire

Think it was English before Scotland tried robbing it.

Disclaimer - I wasn’t there.
