Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

So was just looking at where Morcambe is, whilst watching the shambolic Spurs game. And was surprised to see Carlisle is in England... I would have bet my DH life on it being in Scotland Confused

Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

As my username suggests it's about 6-10 miles south of the border, depending on where you are.

It's been both English and Scottish- iirc Carlisle castle was built to keep the Scottish out of England but then became Scottish. And yes, Hadrian's wall runs right through the city however its buried under the A6 (Scotland road) at Stanwix traffic lights. Hadrian's Wall finishes at Bowness on Solway.

It's one of the few places in England I have been where Scots banknotes can be used without anyone questioning them. Completely normal to get them in change as well in shops.

Ha ha, I'll let you off Grin since you're clearly not a local!

I couldn't find anywhere to watch it where do I find this streaming? so listened on the radio, gutted for them, lots of friends and family have gone down.

Hereford, Hertford and Herford should be closer. Herford definitely has no business being in Germany instead...

I used to think this as well, I also thought Torquay was in Spain Blush

My mother gets Berwick-upon-Tweed and North Berwick confused. She thinks they’re one and the same place.

hugoagogo · 09/01/2022 16:18

Ben Rhydding is not in a Wales either Wink

notimagain · 09/01/2022 16:21

@HunterHearstHelmsley

I used to think Dover was near Bath! When I say used to, I only realised about 18 months ago. Geography has never been my strong suit.
There’s joke about Dominic Rabb in there somewhere..

If you download the Paddy Power app and register, even without placing a bet......

Does everyone know where Settle is without looking at a map?
Yes, I love Car and Kitchen and Ye Olde Naked Man cafe there!

Gardenwoe · 09/01/2022 16:25

@MustDust and yes, gutted for the fans, having seen how far away Morecambe is! (And being a Spurs fan) They had a great game, really did.

@WeAllHaveWings

If it helps you feel better Carlisle was briefly in Scotland.
I thought it was once, thanks for confirming. Smile

A bit like Berwick-on-Tweed then ?

Toddlerteaplease · 09/01/2022 16:26

🙄🙄

MustDust · 09/01/2022 16:26

@Gardenwoe top tip! That's amazing, thank you!

Blousesandhouses22 · 09/01/2022 16:28

@CSJobseeker oh I would certainly home most localish people could! I was thinking of it more as an example as it's very far from me. Like saying Settle or Salisbury. I can place all the counties, but I'm sure there is an area I'm bad at! It is certainly true that it's much easier to place if you have travelled a lot as you tend to see places on the way as points of reference and it's easier to picture motorway systems. I'd struggle with the northern part of the M6 as I think I've only been on it once.

Georgeskitchen · 09/01/2022 16:29

Carlisle is definitely in England, just. Settle is in North Yorks and yes the Settle Carlisle train ride is lovely 😍

Janglingkeys · 09/01/2022 16:29

I thought Dunkirk was in Scotland when I was younger and didn’t quite understand why all the boats went there x

I'm the opposite - northern M6 (I.e. Manchester and up) I could pretty much name every exit, southern M6... not so much.

To be fair, I can see why. It's practically the same as Napoli
MajorCarolDanvers · 09/01/2022 16:34

I started off snootily reading the thread wondering why people would admit to not knowing something so completely obvious.

But if I am honest I could hazard a guess at what towns and cities are on which side of the Welsh/English border unless spelled in a very obviously Welsh way.

Wishiwas24again · 09/01/2022 16:35

Recently moved to Carlisle from Leeds , husband drives the train from Carlisle to Leeds definitely not in Scotland , but currently wish I was still in Leeds !
