Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

So was just looking at where Morcambe is, whilst watching the shambolic Spurs game. And was surprised to see Carlisle is in England... I would have bet my DH life on it being in Scotland Confused

Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

Did you know Carlisle is further east than Edinburgh?

FanGirlX · 09/01/2022 16:40

@theNumbersStation

Carlisle used to be Scottish.

If it was 1091 you’d have been right.

Your Wullie robbed it. Grin

Just called in to say something similar. The "borderlands" of northern England and Southern Scotland were in dispute and kept changing hands until C15 I think. There was a documentary series called The Borderlands on a few years ago. I will see if I can find it.

@ILoveJKR I just checked on a map to be sure.... wow I didn't expect that!

Tripoli was an Italian colony.

Holy fuck. I just checked and you're right

I drive through Carlisle all the time, and spend a lot of time in Scotland, and did not know this.

I forgot how much our country tilts over at the top.

PickAChew · 09/01/2022 16:42

@nancy75

It’s got one of those names that isn’t where it should be, like County Durham really should be in Ireland & even though I know it isn’t I’m still only half convinced Grin
We are well and truly in England.
hilbil21 · 09/01/2022 16:46

My husband thought Skegness was in Scotland because of Inverness Grin

Random789 · 09/01/2022 16:46

Ooh, @IloveJKR, that is a fabulous factoid. I honestly thought you had made a typo or had a brain freeze. Carlisle is on the west coast!, I guffawed to myself. And so it is, but still to the east of Edinburgh which is near the east coast. Confused

It's cos Britain has a hunch. If it sat up straight Edinburgh, perched on its shoulder, would be further east.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2022 16:47

But if I am honest I could hazard a guess at what towns and cities are on which side of the Welsh/English border unless spelled in a very obviously Welsh way.

A normally faultless radio 4 presenter tripped up over Hay on Wye last week.

I know where Settle is, it's the nearest biggish town to Pen-y-Ghent.

Cas112 · 09/01/2022 16:47

No😂😂😂

ILoveJKR · 09/01/2022 16:48

Gardenwoe and CSJobseeker, just one of these weird geographical quirks. Like the Panama canal...the Atlantic entrance to the canal is further west than the Pacific entrance

Isn't that in USA.....y'know like from the film 'sleepless in Settle'?

PickAChew · 09/01/2022 16:49

Though I had no idea that Durham is at pretty much the same latitude as Borgarnes in Iceland, until I bought a bottle of Reyka vodka

hilbil21 · 09/01/2022 16:50

@ErrolTheDragon I will need to ask him where he thinks that is Smile

Grin Don't drag the USA into this thread. When I lived in Pennsylvania, I was always a bit disorientated by York being west of Lancaster.
midsomermurderess · 09/01/2022 16:51

'I used to think Dover was near Bath!' Are you by any chance Dominic Raab?

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 09/01/2022 16:53

I thought Glastonbury was in Scotland until I was about 15. No idea why. It just sounds like it should be.

I also thought Northampton was 'up north' Grin

WhereIsMyGlasses · 09/01/2022 16:55

I do and love it there! And my geography is questionable at best, but I did know Carlisle was on England.

freelions · 09/01/2022 16:55

@ErrolTheDragon

Pen-y-ghent really has no right being in Yorkshire! Definitely sounds like it belongs in Snowdonia Wink

Confusedeh?

Borgarnes, according to that page is Coordinates: 64°32′N 21°55′W

Durham is 54°46′34″N 1°34′24″W

WhereIsMyGlasses · 09/01/2022 16:56

@RampantIvy that was in reply to you about Settle, my replying and quoting on here is also questionable 😂

Spitspotsput · 09/01/2022 16:56

Don’t put too much faith in place names. The Welsh bridge in Shrewsbury is definitely in England (for now, anyway)

camperqueen54 · 09/01/2022 16:57

I was born there and I'm definitely not Scottish 🤣
