So was just looking at where Morcambe is, whilst watching the shambolic Spurs game. And was surprised to see Carlisle is in England... I would have bet my DH life on it being in Scotland Confused

Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

City ... yip you're right

ShowOfHands · 09/01/2022 18:15

Carlisle =/= Scottish comes up regularly on things you didn't know threads. Pontefract suffers a similar fate.

Gardenwoe · 09/01/2022 18:16

Ahh now, isn't Pontefract where liquorice comes from?

Yep Pontefract cakes.

PuppyMonkey · 09/01/2022 18:20

@hilbil21

My husband thought Skegness was in Scotland because of Inverness Grin
This always comes up on these kind of threads and I do Grin at it.

No it's about a 15 minute drive from Carlisle to the Scottish border where you'll find Gretna Green if you wish to elope and get married.
Carlisle is a lovely small city with lovely access to the country side, and great motorway and rail links to Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester and the Lake District.
We lived there for 7 years I loved it.

FanGirlX · 09/01/2022 18:24

I fancy a visit to Carlisle now. Looks like an interesting place historically. Vindolanda is not too far away either.

1forAll74 · 09/01/2022 18:25

Its about eight miles south of the border. in Cumbria..

FanGirlX · 09/01/2022 18:28
@MustDust and yes, gutted for the fans, having seen how far away Morecambe is! (And being a Spurs fan) They had a great game, really did.
Although Lancaster is on the West Coast Mainline (direct from Euston), about 3 hours journey. Morecambe is then a couple of stops on the local rattler.

HaveringWavering · 09/01/2022 18:29

It's not an island either, is it? Grin

goldenboats · 09/01/2022 18:29

This post remind me of the time my sister went on holiday somewhere in the U.K., when I asked her where she went, she replied, 'oh, you know, Wales/Norfolk way'

WestendVBroadway · 09/01/2022 18:36

I always assumed that Covelly ( a village in Devon ) was actually in Wales. I think I heard it as Llevelly😀

Esspee · 09/01/2022 18:41

FFS

RampantIvy · 09/01/2022 18:54

I'm in Scotland and would see road signs pointing to Carlisle,

When you join the M1 from the M62 the sign says Barnsley and London, but they are nowhere near each other Grin

The lawlessness that resulted in that area led to the Border Reivers, who are interesting to read about if you're into history. The Border Reivers were generally a bit further north than Carlisle, but not by much.

There is some really interesting stuff about the border Rievers in the museum in Carlisle. Apparently DH’s ancestors were at war with Alexander Armstrong’s ancestors Grin

Another interesting fact – did you know that Edinburgh is further West than Bristol? A good one to remember for pub quizzes.

And there is a Wales in South Yorkshire.

Clovelly?
NothingIsWrong · 09/01/2022 19:03

I was quite a few years older than I should have been when I realised Andover was not a Dutch city...

And Pen-y-Ghent has no business being in Yorkshire, it's clearly Welsh

FanGirlX · 09/01/2022 19:05

Just to confuse matters. Clove LLs is a suburb of Sydney 😂

FanGirlX · 09/01/2022 19:06

Clovelly. Bloody mumsnet autocorrect.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 09/01/2022 19:06
@ErrolTheDragon

Pen-y-ghent really has no right being in Yorkshire! Definitely sounds like it belongs in Snowdonia Wink
See also 'Pontefract'.

sarahc336 · 09/01/2022 19:09

I'm from near there and nope it's defo Cumbria which is England 😂😂

Masdintle · 09/01/2022 19:09

@ILoveJKR

Did you know Carlisle is further east than Edinburgh?
I love this little fact. Always blows people's minds. One is on the west coast and one is on the east coast, but the west coast one is further east than the east coast one
WestendVBroadway · 09/01/2022 19:10

@Regulus, yes sorry I meant Clovelly!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 09/01/2022 19:11

@ErrolTheDragon

Although Pendle Hill is more interesting. It's name is Pen (hill - celtic) - dle (earlier spelt as hul, which originally derived from 'hyll', Old English for hill) Hill (modern English for hill)

So it means Hill Hill Hill

Apt. It's definitely a hilly hill.

Also like Thorpe Hamlet in Norwich. Thorpe (old Germanic village) Hamlet (old French village).

Village Village.

FanGirlX · 09/01/2022 19:12

Bristol being further east than Edinburgh has just surprised me. I had to check that one.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2022 19:28

The lawlessness that resulted in that area led to the Border Reivers, who are interesting to read about if you're into history. The Border Reivers were generally a bit further north than Carlisle, but not by much.

They operated over quite a wide area both sides of the border, attested to by the number of old 'Peel towers' down into Lancashire.
