Thanks

I don't drink hot chocolate very often, but I recently had one in Hotel Chocolat. It was hazelnut dark chocolate and was topped with chocolate whipped cream that was almost like mousse. I was very happy with that.

I’ve never had a good hot chocolate that I haven’t made myself. There’s always lumps or it’s weak or too hot or tastes funny because it’s made with cheap powder.

The best hot chocolate is made with lots of good quality cocoa powder and caster sugar that has been kept with vanilla pods. Start with the coco and sugar in a pan and whisk in milk little by little until a thick smooth chocolaty sludge, then add the rest of the milk and keep whisking until it’s hot. Don’t let it boil.

Yum. Doesn’t need cream or marshmallows but nice for a finishing touch to add cream then dark chocolate shavings.

Cocoa Mountain in Durness.
A long way to go for it though!

At a firework display, it was made with Baileys and whipped cream.

Cooplands. Don't know what it is, but their hot chocolate is delightful.

We used to rent some land that didn't have any power or running water and one horrendous winter when it did nothing but either pour down with rain or just freeze, I was up and sorting out horses in minus 4 freezing cold temp – 6am if that and with nothing but a head torch to find my way and stumble around.

That winter was horrendous it was nothing but a twice daily nightmare of cold, shit, sludge, mud and falling over everything. This one morning I'd just stuffed four massive hay nets, lost all feeling in my fingers and toes and still hadn't managed to get the water pipe fully thawed out when unannounced, my friend rocked up with a flask, bag of goodies and her little camping stove thing to save the day.

Didn't know she was even gonna turn up she just arrived like an angel, set the camping thing up, got some milk boiled and made me the best hot chocolate I ever had made with what I now know to be Martins Chocolatier premium flakes.

Swear to God it was so good I could have cried.

I really like the one in cafe Nero. No cream.

leopardpeelbanana · 03/01/2022 08:30

Chocolate cafe in Parnell Auckland does a drink called a Chili Dezio which is melted dark choc with chilli and whipped cream. Delicious

MakkaPakkas · 03/01/2022 08:32

Bitter sweet (a chocolate shop in Oakland, CA) which I think is now closed. The hot chocolate was made with chocolate shavings and spices and was very strong. No cream on top.
The next best and also very delicious is Paul A Young in London. Hot chocolate made with sugar cocoa powder water & dark chocolate shavings. Also no cream.
Everywhere else I tend to find it's more of a hot milk drink, which I don't like.

The hot chocolate Milano from cafe Nero 😋

MissSteak · 03/01/2022 08:46

Carluccio’s - bicerin.

Small cup of thick deliciousness.

In a tiny little back street cafe in Bruges...

Long way to go but the best hot chocolate I ever had was in Tallinn, Estonia. They put chocolate syrup in the glass first and then fill the glass with a mix of hot chocolate and foamy hot milk. White chocolate powder on top. Absolutely delicious. I had 2 a day when we stayed there!

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 03/01/2022 08:54

Knoops in Rye.
There used to be (may still be?) a cafe chain in London called Apostrophe - their hot chocolate was amazing.
And also a 10p hot chocolate from a machine in a university once. It was over sweet and just what I needed at the time.

WingingItEveryDay7 · 03/01/2022 08:55

Longleat!! No idea on which brand they use but whenever we go there we have to get a hot chocolate 😋

Rattysparklebum · 03/01/2022 08:55

A shop called Knoops in Rye, made with real whole chocolate, you can choose from about 20 different strengths of cocoa solids depending on whether you like it sweet or strong and bitter and you can add other flavourings such as zested orange. They have opened several other shops in London now too and Brighton.

SmallElephant · 03/01/2022 08:55

Mine was in France. Yes to whipped cream!

Namechangeforthis88 · 03/01/2022 08:56

Café at the Highland Chocolatier, Grandtully. So rich, struggled to finish a small cup. Don't think whipped cream was involved, it was many years ago.

SW1amp · 03/01/2022 08:56

Knoops near Clapham Junction station

The menu they have their is incredible

Choccywoccydoodah in Brighton. It was basically molten chocolate. It's closed now, sadly.

autismandgin · 03/01/2022 08:58

I had one on Redcar seafront last week which was absolutely incredible. Whipped cream, gingerbread men, chocolate sauce etc. It was perfect!

But at home it’s the hot chocolate shavings from Lakeland. They’re simply divine!

ferneytorro · 03/01/2022 08:59

Chocolate works, independent cafe in Clitheroe and skipton. They have a “vat” of it on the go so it’s proper chocolate rather than powder.

BlusteringBoobies · 03/01/2022 09:00

Not out and about but the best hot chocolate I've had has been made with the Hotel Chocolat Salted Caramel Chocolate flakes for their velvitiser.

I use it in my Nespresso Barista machine with whole milk and it is the most indulgent and scummy hot chocolate ever.

If I'm feeling extra naughty I'll add in a 'cookies and cream' marshmallow

It's only 9am and I want one already 😆
