@VenusClapTrap

Twenty odd years ago in Buenos Aires; sitting outside at a cafe in a old square, watching the tango dancers in the street, on a cold December afternoon. The hot chocolates there were called submarinos, and involved a tall glass of hot milk and a long bar of chocolate that slowly dissolved into the milk. Heaven.
That's outrageous I'm going to Buenos Aires Grin

There seems to be a bit of an Eastern European theme here.

Mine was in Lithuania. It was creamy and molten and so chocolatey

Who knew the Cafe Nero one is good?! Must try it and also Hotel Chocolat.

@CleanQueen123

A cafe at the far end of Marlborough high street, closest to the college. They did various hot chocolates, including white chocolate and chilli which was the best thing ever.
YUM

@IntermittentParps Go! Go! I used to go there for work (when I was young and took that sort of thing for granted Hmm) and if I was there over a Sunday it was my favourite thing; San Telmo flea market and submarino in the square watching the dancing.

Oh to have the chance to go back there now…

A friend of mine lived there for a bit but I never took the opportunity to visit. Wish I had now!
I'll go one day soon, I hope.

Caffe Rivoire in Florence

gelatodipistacchio · 11/03/2022 19:42

Oh, and actually the hot chocolate at Paul is also excellent.

Yafilthyanimal · 11/03/2022 19:43

Thornton shop. Made with chocolate shavings 😋

Bearfrills · 11/03/2022 19:49

Edinburgh Zoo, from the little waffle hut next to the pygmy hippos and the park. I don't know if it was exceptionally good or if I just really needed it because it was chilly and I was tired but it was flipping lovely. I drank mine, mooched DH's remaining half-cup off him, and then made sad faces until he bought another one for us to share on the walk up the hill (to be fair, they were only small cups).

Bearfrills · 11/03/2022 19:50

It had no whipped crem or marshmallows and it was really creamy but not sickly.

Onesipmore · 13/03/2022 12:38

Know varying different strengths of chocolate used depending on your palette, with a home made marshmallow on top.
Failing that you cannot beat Angelina in Paris

Onesipmore · 13/03/2022 12:38

This should say Knoop

Londondreams1 · 13/03/2022 12:40

Hot chocolate anywhere in Russia is out of this world. A close second is a chocolatier in Paris, the name of which I can’t recall, but wasn’t a patch on what I had in Russia!

Londondreams1 · 13/03/2022 12:43

I tried to work it out and I feel they put a dash of oil in it so the chocolate retains the heat and doesn’t revert back to solid chocolate

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/03/2022 12:50

Butler's is my favourite, usually in Dundrum shopping centre but I've never had a bad Butler's.

I don't like whipped cream, marshmallows or even chocolate shavings on top. If the drink itself is perfect none of that is needed.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 13/03/2022 12:51

@gildalily

Dublin Airport. It was like a cup of liquid chocolate. I can't remember the name but I remember the chocolate. I think there was branches all over Dublin in actual fact but the flight was delayed so I was forced to drink one at the airport Grin
Butler's

This is a FANTASTIC thread. 🤣
Like others have said, I also have a velvetiser, they're amazing!!

thegcatsmother · 13/03/2022 13:05

Bruges. It came in a silver pot and was just right. The cafe I used to go to in Tervuren when I lived there, used to do cups of hot milk and bowls of mixed chocolate drops so you adjusted your chocolate to your taste. I was also partial to an Opkekertje (mocha).

MrWhippyBloon · 13/03/2022 13:11

Bruges for me too, made with a pot of chocolate buttons - tasted divine.
Also had one at San Lorenzo Market in Florence which was a dream - thick and silky and absolutely delicious.

Whatwouldnanado · 13/03/2022 13:11

The Viennese born widow of a famous author made me hot chocolate when I visited her home on business. She heated milk in a small pan, added solid dark chocolate whisked it vigorously and poured it into huge mugs. Part of the hot milk was mixed with a little cream then frothed separately in a sort of jug with a plunger thing inside, like an old fashioned Horlicks mixer. This foam was gently poured on top of the chocolate. Heaven.

Bearfrills · 13/03/2022 13:13

Had the world's most disappointing hot chocolate yesterday. I took the older DC to a gaming place and ordered hot chocolate while they becamse one with the Matrix. It was like brown water, no taste at all, and then clumps of soggy power in the bottom of the cup when I got to the bottom of it.

Smudge18 · 13/03/2022 13:15

I visited Knoop in Rye for the first time last week, amazing.

loopylindi · 13/03/2022 13:22

somewhere in Seville, served with churros. Divine

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 13/03/2022 13:24

I used to go to Rye specifically to go to Knoops, and I ordered their flakes online to use in my velvetiser. I need to try out the London branches, but I never seem to be in the right place at the right time. I find their bowls immensely comforting.
