There's an amazing ice cream shop in Richmond upon Thames, Gelateria Danieli that do an amazing indulgent Italian hot chocolate. Thick and comforting, no wonder they opened a chocolate shop in the same street but I do have a very sweet tooth!

Albert Docks a few months ago at a bakery type place.

merrymouse · 03/01/2022 13:18

Also Angelina in Paris, but thanks for the tip about Gelateria Danieli!

A local cafe makes the perfect HC. No cream but perfect milky chocolate.

Jackieweaverishere · 03/01/2022 13:21

Pump street bakery in Orford, Suffolk. Didn't need cream or marshmallows, absolutely delicious!

gildalily · 03/01/2022 13:34

Dublin Airport. It was like a cup of liquid chocolate. I can't remember the name but I remember the chocolate. I think there was branches all over Dublin in actual fact but the flight was delayed so I was forced to drink one at the airport Grin

Haven't read the full thread but I live in NYC and DH is a hot chocolate fiend. We used to live City Bakery until it closed down but now we get hot chocolate at Mar ze Dahr and it is AMAZING. Worth a visit if anyone comes to visit Grin.

BooksAndGin · 03/01/2022 14:00

I have a tassimo machine. Makes the best hot chocolates! Have lots of syrups as well so I can make a Black Forest hot chocolate and what not. Grin

comfortablyfrumpy · 03/01/2022 14:08

@Tomeeornottomee

In a tiny little back street cafe in Bruges...
Same!

I can still remember it and that must have been 20+ years ago.

Failing that, to make at home- Martins as recommended upthread.

Out and about, Hotel Chocolat.

poblwc · 03/01/2022 14:08

I was given some Harth hot chocolate for christmas and it's amazing! Really thick! Somewhere between hot chocolate and chocolate custard. Brew

Holdontowhat · 03/01/2022 15:30

Yes to cafe Nero, with a shot of peppermint!

stormy11 · 03/01/2022 15:33

Fergbaker in Queenstown was amazing! Patagonia also in Queenstown did a good one too.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 03/01/2022 15:41

Various places in Spain and Russia that do the thick chocolate you can stand your spoon up in. If I can be arsed I make a jar at home using grated chocolate, sugar and cornflour.

There was until very recently an amazing cafe locally that did hot chocolate made with real chocolate. You could have milk or dark and it was glorious. Sadly they have sold the business.

At home for an instant (with milk) I usually use green and blacks and indulge with posh stuff as a treat. I like my hot chocolate dark and rich.

Never cream on top but sometimes marshmallows. Salt caramel ones are good.

ontana · 03/01/2022 15:56

Gleneagles cafe recently

There used to be somewhere on the high street in Edinburgh with a French name? It basically did liquid chocolate in a mug

doctorboo · 03/01/2022 15:59

I know what I’m having tonight!

At home I make my hot chocolate with a couple of teaspoons of whittards powder, mixed with m&s hot choc flakes (basically grated chocolate) 1/3 hot water and 2/3 hot milk. I then pop an obscene amount of mini marshmallows on top.

Using the above means I can also make a hot chocolate for my allergy ridden son as the hot choc is vegan (but not the flakes) and I can use oat milk and vegan marshmallows too.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 03/01/2022 16:11

The e very best one I can remember clearly from about 16 years ago! It was October and I was in Prague. It was so cold with snow on the ground. Sat at an outside cafe in an old square and had a hot chocolate with rum in it. Whipped cream on top too. It was just perfection.

MrsKellySeveride · 03/01/2022 16:22

Slattery's in Whitefield, Manchester. A tall glass thickly coated on the inside with melted chocolate and ilex with scalding milk. Another chocolate disk on the top. It's entirely up to you if you mix the chocolate with the milk although extensive research has shown the best method to be drinking the milk then using the long spoon to eat the molten chocolate...amazing ❤️

@IDontHaveThePelvisForAFuton
I thought I was going to be the only one to say Greggs!
I don't like tea or coffee so I have had a lot of hot chocolate in many places and I do like a posh one but my favourite is Greggs. No fancy cup or cream and marshmallows and dead cheap but for some reason I just love it and find it really comforting.

DinkBoo · 03/01/2022 16:52

@gildalily. Butlers is the name! :-D

You can buy blocks to make your own at home from amazon.

My favourite hot chocolate is a small dark hot chocolate, with a salted caramel, in Stephen's Green, the first day of every trip back to Dublin. Not happened for 3 years now. Stupid covid.

Pashazade · 03/01/2022 16:59

@poblwc do you have a piccy or link to buy? That is my idea of good hot chocolate! Grin I do have a Velvetiser which I love for a long drink but stand your spoon up in it hot chocolate is my favourite!

DroopyClematis · 03/01/2022 17:02

A vending machine at work in the late 80s.

It also dispensed the best Bovril. It's easy to make, just Bovril and hot water.
Somehow mine never tastes the same.

Served the vilest tea I'd ever tasted though.

IHateCoronavirus · 03/01/2022 17:06

The Clock Cafe just up from Hyde park in Leeds 1998-2001 yum!

gildalily · 03/01/2022 17:08

@DinkBoo ooh thanks! I'm off to Amazon now.

jay55 · 03/01/2022 17:11

As a teenager the hot chocolate at Jolleys in Bath was always the best treat, it had cream and marshmallows on at a time when marshmallows were not a regular hot chocolate topping.

Tumbleweed101 · 03/01/2022 17:49

Had a lovely one from the college vending machine of all places in the 90's. Was bubbly and frothy. Still wish I could get one again!
