Things you enjoy which are supposed to be terrible

I'm inspired by a thread about ""Nice" Things That Aren't Actually Nice" over on the AIBU board.

I'd love to know about things you (secretly or not-so-secretly) love which you're "supposed" to find dull, inconvenient, or just plain crap.

For me: the cheapest tinned vegetables, replacement bus services (nicer view sometimes!), Travelodges.

Yes, lockdown. Apart from the awful reasons and suffering of others, something about the enforced, common slowdown was therapeutic.

@Lightisnotwhite in my experience, nobody wants to go out in January. Personally I never want to see alcohol until February!

Benjispruce4 · 10/10/2021 07:51

Just thought of another as it’s just happened . The smug feeling you get when you wake up after a night out when you were the one driving or sober for whatever reason. Was me last night and I feel great this morning. I shouldn’t feel smug but I do as the others were a few sheets to the wind.

I love a January birthday.

As a child, Christmas revisited but just for me! Meant taking down the Christmas decs wasn’t a sad “see you next year” but an “oo X days to go” thing! And any of that “I really hoped I’d get X for Christmas” might mean it came very soon after. My parents did insist no joint presents though unless people were genuinely doing the same for siblings with more spaced out birthdays. There was always the possibility of snow which was very cool too.

As an adult I’m not a let’s go out and party person and I can see if you are that having a birthday in the sober season might suck. But cake and family, a meal out or a takeaway, that sort of thing is great.

It also means I postpone my New Years resolutions. I might think about stuff on Dec. 31st but in practice I declare January a practice month and nothing counts until February. Feb is a much better month to start any big changes - it’s shorter so less daunting. In my head anyway!

When my cats bring me "surprises". It was a mouse this morning. Fascinating being able to look at them close up.

Having a go on the tombola stall and winning some of the tat on there.

Letting dogs lick my face and kissing all manner of animals on their faces at the petting zoo. Sheep, cows, horses, goats etc.

Not talking to people for days on end. This hasnt happened since my youngest was born but when his brother was in hospital for one of his many conditions and it was his dad's turn to be there, I'd go home for a few days and not speak to anyone or even turn on the TV. Bliss.

Pulling hair out the plug hole. When you get a big clump covered in gunk and shampoo, it's so satisfying.

Living in the UK Grin

MrsJBaptiste · 10/10/2021 09:39

And yes, ironing 😁

Looking forward to sticking Spotify on later and ironing everything for the week!

pteradactyl · 10/10/2021 09:48

@lightisnotwhite I'm 35 so not youngish to me but I guess subjectively I am 😂

LowbrowVictoriana · 10/10/2021 11:48

I forgot to add...

Being middle aged. I can still do everything I did before, but am so much wiser, chilled, experienced, not worried about looking young or cool, and I couldn't give a stuff what anyone thinks of me.

TheChosenTwo · 10/10/2021 13:49

Another one who used to love delousing dds hair! Was quite sad when they grew out of the having nits and then secretly thrilled when ds got them a few years ago Grin only once though Sad
I’m also partial to an episode of midsomer murders on a dreary weekend afternoon! Fire roaring, blanket on, the sleepy feeling creeps over me and before I know it an hour has passed, I’m awake again and the story is basic enough to not have lost the crap plot! Perfect snoozy telly.

deeplyambivalent · 10/10/2021 14:04

Being alone for Christmas

ThanksForAllTheFish · 10/10/2021 14:14

I really enjoyed the CATS movie that got absolutely slated. Went to the cinema to see it and loved it. So long as you tell yourself it’s like watching a play rather than a Hollywood movie it’s fine.

Underamour · 10/10/2021 15:03

Cold ravioli and ratatouille

peaceanddove · 10/10/2021 15:23

I love crap weather. The colder and gloomier the better - throw in heavy rain and I'm in Heaven.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 10/10/2021 15:33

Wotsits but ones that have been left out and are slightly stale so they have a chew factor! 😳😂

Liverbird77 · 10/10/2021 19:22

@Pumpkinstace I bloody love Butlins! We are just back from Skegness Tots' Week. The kids had a blast.

careerchangeperhaps · 10/10/2021 19:28

FlatteredFool · 10/10/2021 19:31

Stale wotsits are the best kind.

Ifonlyidknownthen · 10/10/2021 20:22

Sprouts

peaceanddove · 11/10/2021 15:27

Range Rovers. I know they are openly derided on here and supposedly break down every week. But I bloody love mine, it's gorgeous and drives like a dream - and it hasn't given me a moment's problems in 2 years Smile

Frankbutchersfangs · 11/10/2021 15:30

having a virus/flu. I find it relieves my mental anguish and the feeling of being ill (aches, chills etc.) is a cozy feeling

SleepQuest33 · 11/10/2021 15:32

Boring nights in just watching Netflix
