Things you enjoy which are supposed to be terrible

I'm inspired by a thread about ""Nice" Things That Aren't Actually Nice" over on the AIBU board.

I'd love to know about things you (secretly or not-so-secretly) love which you're "supposed" to find dull, inconvenient, or just plain crap.

For me: the cheapest tinned vegetables, replacement bus services (nicer view sometimes!), Travelodges.

OP posts:

That smelly waft of hot air you get entering a tube station.

Upstairs on a double decker bus especially if it's raining.

Jackie Chan movies especially his really early HK movies.

Supermarket Sweep the original 90s one with Dale WInton. With normal looking people in oversized jumpers with bad hair. Hate the reboot with all the love island rejects with their game tan, teeth and nails yuk.

Swigging milk directly out of the carton.

@smallandimperfectlyformed aulds were definitely around then. It is odd how some foods get around the country and some stay "local" delights. I was most amused a few weeks back when English (south coasters too) DJs on my favourite radio show were discussing the fact one had been on holiday to Scotland and the other was miffed he'd not brought him back some tablet! Grin

They ended up ordering a fairly large batch via Amazon!

Working with primary school children not a fan myself but it reminded me I enjoy spending time with/teaching teenagers. Which most adults don't seem to be keen on. I've been a Scout and guide leader and youth club staff member and I really miss not being able to do that now

The smell of chlorine from swimming pools. don't most people like this? I do

But I have a confession - I've NEVER had a fray bentos pie. I don't doubt they're yummy but it's not something my mum would have bought/used (fab cook made her own pies) then I went veggie at 16. I think they've only recently introduced veggie ones and the cals would be terrible for me.

Thought of another when I was sorting my baked beans and sausages dinner - creamed mushrooms! I don't know ANYONE else who likes them. Love them on toast, or with a little milk added to "loosen" it makes a great quick and easy pasta sauce.

Veggie ravioli in a tin. And cheap onion ring crisps food wise
Popping spots in non food world is a guilty pleasure too

Ajl46 · 08/10/2021 20:54

Faffing around with spreadsheets
Doing my tax return

hiredandsqueak · 08/10/2021 20:57

Getting up early,
Cleaning
Writing that, I realise I'm turning into my mother

ClinkeyMonkey · 08/10/2021 21:08

Untangling the Christmas tree lights and unpicking knots in laces etc - anything a bit fiddly.

When the weather is crap and I don't have to feel guilty about sitting on my arse.

Phoebesgift · 08/10/2021 21:13

Family walks. Lots of complaining they're tired from kids and basically boring and pointless.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 08/10/2021 21:16

@rubydoobydoo

MRI scans - I find them really relaxing!
Me too! Have to have them regularly to monitor my condition and find them quite calming. All the bangs etc I enjoy making patterns from them. Got the next one due in November and I’m looking forward to it. Remember one a while ago when dd was small and not sleeping and I almost drifted off, radiographer was hysterical laughing.
Libertaire · 08/10/2021 21:20

Supermarket sandwiches. The cheaper & more basic the better. Asda’s tuna mayo on white is a particular favourite. Only £1.10 per pack, too.

TDogsInHats · 08/10/2021 21:24

@IhateBoswell

The cheap version of Smarties. A million times better imho.
What brand are the cheap version of Smarties please?
Standrewsschool · 08/10/2021 21:25

“Lady in Red” - Chris de Burgh

Fat face/Seasalt/etc

Folk dancing

Standrewsschool · 08/10/2021 21:26

MRI - I had recently. I treated it as half an hour rest, and closed my eyes. I can easily understand how you could nod off.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 08/10/2021 21:33

@MsTSwift

Real housewives of Beverley hills I know it’s hideous but I enjoy it - people arguing in beautiful sometimes naff houses. After a hard emotionally draining day it just fits the bill.
I came on to say this!!
tickledtiger · 08/10/2021 21:34

I like food and drink to be so hot it burns my mouth.

Nataliefrances123 · 08/10/2021 21:48

Fake meat
Loved lockdown
Hubby working from home :)
Home schooling the kids

Chunkymenrock · 08/10/2021 21:48

Childbirth, hanging out washing, ironing tea towels.

Chunkymenrock · 08/10/2021 21:50

Ooh, and filling in forms. With a pen is the best!

Nataliefrances123 · 08/10/2021 21:50

Being a hermit

DarlingFell · 08/10/2021 22:18

Driving, I love driving on country lanes and motorways. DH and I toss a coin for fairness as we both love to drive

Blow drying my hair

Caravans (touring ones that go on the back of a car) I find them so cosy and they make me happy

Airports

Cemeteries, utterly fascinating

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 08/10/2021 23:26

The twilight films Blush
Reality TV- The Hills
Own brand chocolate bars (polar bars = penguins)
Hotels
Camping
Wwe (I know I know but it's take your mind out nonsense)

LowbrowVictoriana · 09/10/2021 09:01

Oh I love long(ish) drives by myself on the motorway. A few hours of sitting in peace listening to music or podcasts, buying expensive sandwiches and snacks from the services. No annoying children or husband.

languagelover96 · 09/10/2021 09:15

Fawlty towers
Language lessons

PeskyRooks · 09/10/2021 11:47

Oh god I miss smoking so much. Used to be nothing better than sitting down with a cup of tea, the Chat big crossword and a fag in my hand. Bliss.
Then a co-op meal deal for lunch.

Couldhavebeenme3 · 09/10/2021 11:56

Tinned sponge puddings
Sweet rose wine

Lovely!

OhWhyNot · 09/10/2021 12:03
