Turns out, nothing bad happens if...

When I arrived into my thirties, like a lot of women I know, I experienced a dip in the amount of energy I found I had to allocate to fucks being given Grin

Since then, I've noticed a number of Eureka moments when Ive realised, "turns out, nothing bad happens if..." and they are for the most part, joyful.

Here are a few of my favourites (personal to me, obviously, I'm sure people in other circs will disagree):

Turns out, nothing bad happens if you don't iron.

Turns out, nothing bad happens if you don't mow your lawn (literally or figuratively).

Turns out, nothing bad happens if you don't wear a padded bra (because I spent my twenties sadly trying to enhance my non-existent norks because "men would notice").

Turns out, nothing bad happens if you wash your hair with shower gel.

Turns out, nothing bad happens if you don't do a patch test 24 hours before colouring.

HBU?

Something bad happens if you don't buy chocolate!! Who said that?! Grin

It does in this house anyway..

Daleksatemyshed · 07/09/2021 18:43

@PalmarisLongus I think you've found the real truth here, none of these things matter but we tell ourselves they DO, oh what will people say, we will feel guilty because we're not perfect. I confess, I'm not perfect by any means and I don't give a flying one.
I've used the ironing board once since I got it, it's time to give it a new lease of life, what else can you do with one?

blueskytoday06 · 07/09/2021 18:47

Nothing bad happens if you put a load of washing in on Monday but don't take it out till Friday. (Might have to put it round again though).

blueskytoday06 · 07/09/2021 18:51

Nothing bad happens if you wear leggings for 3 days running. The same pair.

Bargebill19 · 07/09/2021 19:42

@Daleksatemyshed

You can use an ironing board as a potting table if you like to garden. Also handy as a temporary table to do whatever you do with normal tables!
On a low setting they make great footstools for sofas- and low tables.
Quite good for kids to use as small indoor tents - just throw a bedsheet over it and the back of the sofa. Plonk a cat on it to act as an anchor.
Did mention use a table?

Nothing bad happens if you throw stuff away rather than sell it on marketplace, drag to the charity shop or give away.

NBH if you co sleep.

NBH if you fall asleep with the curtains still open

NBH if you sleep during the day

NBH if you buy take away most nights instead of cooking.

NBH if you see the good in the mother of your daughter's sister and try to forge a relationship.

NBH if you don't celebrate celebrations such as birthdays and Christmas in a big way because you'd rather have energy to be a parent or focus on the hobby/dream/goal that is actually important to you.

HangingOver · 07/09/2021 21:59

Also NBH if your laundry gets darked on.

I er...

Know this one well. Blush

Plus NBH if you mostly use the quick wash setting that takes 30monutes instead of the full wash setting that takes over 2 hours.

HangingOver · 07/09/2021 22:52

I've always been curious about the quick wash. My machine does a 15 minute one but I've never dared Grin

OP posts:
Bargebill19 · 07/09/2021 23:40

@HangingOver

Never used anything other than the quick wash since I first had a washing machine 30 years ago. Before that it was a twin tub and a weeks worth of laundry - everything shared the same water.

Nbh.

HangingOver · 07/09/2021 23:48

Oh and nbfh if you do NOTHING. If you're enjoying it you're not "wasting" time. Many nights I go to bed too early to sleep and just stick an audio book on that I've heard 100 times and lay there feeling the lovely softness of the duvet. Pure contentment.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/09/2021 00:10

I only ever use the quick wash. Its stuff like uniforms that have been worn once, my stuff that I do wear more than once but doesnt get "dirty" dirty. I would only use a full wash on hard worn workwear or muddy outdoors stuff. We wash daily, wear deodorant, dont do manual jobs, so baring the odd incident of dropping a blob of curry down my front (why is it always fucking curry?!) my clothes dont need to full 2.5 hours to wash.

It saves water and electricity, and the clothes are clean so why use a full wash if you dont need to?

BlackTee40 · 08/09/2021 05:58

Nbh if you wear clothes more than once before washing them.

BlackTee40 · 08/09/2021 06:01

I wear things once in my weekly rotation, hang them to air and can wear them probably 5,6, possibly 8 times before they need washing 🤷‍♀️ nbh.

Gufo · 08/09/2021 07:02

You say no at work. Years of being a people pleaser and taking more and more on. I said no to a project- and nothing bad happened!

ManifestDestinee · 08/09/2021 08:28

If you don't think wrecking the planet is bad, I guess?

I don't think I get this thread. Every example is either something that it is patently obvious "nothing bad happens" OR its something where something bad very much can happen and you're just saying you don't care.

FindingMeno · 08/09/2021 08:33

Nothing bad happens if you find 3p in the manky stuff in the bottom of a schoolbag and you bin it with the rest of the detritus.

BettySweaty · 08/09/2021 09:07

@JovialNickname

You let your arms and legs hang outside the duvet.... a witch won't come and bite them off.

Just me then Grin

Also me! Took me until my late 20s to do this comfortably Grin

You get the point of the thread quite well it seems. Smile

To me, a lot of it is things we've been taught we shouldn't do because.... Well we just shouldn't...

Don't wear the same t-shirt 2 days in a row, people will think bad of you.
Change the duvet every week or people will think bad of you.
Clean your step every Saturday or her at number 33 will put it around that you're seeing men of a night.
Don't leave bread out on the side or it'll be no good within 20 minutes and it'll have to be thrown out.
You must have clean blouse and skirt everyday at school or teacher will think I'm a bad mum.

You get the point.

Most of it is just nonsense and nothing bad happens if you stop giving a shit about the small bullshit. Maybe once upon a time people cared about such trivial things, like in my mums generation of the 50, 60s, 70s etc. But not nowadays.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 08/09/2021 11:15

NBH

  • if you stop dyeing your hair and let it go grey.
  • if you have a lie in rather than tackling the list of jobs
  • if you don’t get involved in other people’s drama
  • if the meal doesn’t work out and you just bin it and get takeout instead
  • if you let the kids stay up late on a weeknight.
  • if the kids clothes don’t really match.
  • if you wander round barefoot (or let the kids do it)
  • if you turn off your mobile phone

But I don't, because many of the things mentioned are not nonsense and bad things can and do happen as a consequence. Bad things DO happen when you get takeout every night, if you bin stuff you should recycle, if you don't wash yourself or iron or do a patch test or ever mow your lawn.

BearSoFair · 08/09/2021 11:24

If you say no to invitations just because you don't want to go. I spent years going to events because I was free and felt I had to go unless I had other commitments.

FinallyHere · 08/09/2021 11:25

is important for me to make my own decisions about where to put my energy and what to ignore as trivial.

Me, no one else.

@ManifestDestinee What bad things happen if you don't iron?

ManifestDestinee · 08/09/2021 12:13

@ManifestDestinee What bad things happen if you don't iron?

Well, if you go to work in rumpled clothes looking like you slept in them, you could be told you don't look professional, if it's a uniform you could get a warning, you could miss out on a promotion. If you combine the not ironing with wearing the same clothes for a week, washing your hair with shower gel or not washing at all, and wearing dirty shoes, and all the other things here, you''re likely to lose your job entirely.

We can all joke and pretend that standards are outdated or old fashioned and dont matter at all, but we all know that's just wishful thinking.
