Another option could be Treasure Trails - there's a Durham-based one and I'm sure it's about £8 for the pack?

Do
parents have to pay for the
forest adventure too?

Someaddedsugar · 26/06/2022 20:36

lifelongfrugaleer · 26/06/2022 20:35

According to the faq you can on a. Lead

I think it's definitely a good option then - also handy as you can stay all day and take a picnic

I think everyone has to pay from what I remember (unless they're a toddler).

Definitely have to pay for adults at Broomhouse farm. If you are on Facebook there is a video on their page of the daughter who is in her 20’s doing the route. Hope that will help.

AlviarinAesSedai · 26/06/2022 21:21

In fact it’s on their website , the video for Broomhouse farm. I think it looks great fun. @lifelongfrugaleer sorry to tag you.

lifelongfrugaleer · 27/06/2022 06:20

It’s ok, thanks I may suggest it

Someaddedsugar · 29/06/2022 20:56

Did you find anywhere for your weekend meet up @lifelongfrugaleer?

DS has got chicken pox (we've avoided it for the six months it's been doing the rounds at nursery). He's asked if I can go and get some beef from Broom House Farm for Sunday lunch as a treat this week - something tells me he's taking advantage of being ill and he's only 4 😂.

No but it’s not for a few weeks yet. See what the forcast is nearer.

ah he sounds smart but hope he’s not to poxy

Oh no! Hope the chicken pox is not too uncomfortable. Just in case it's helpful, we found porridge oats in a sock in the bath water worked well to distract from the itching (maybe it was the comedy factor more than anything, who knows)!

PickAChew · 30/06/2022 23:19

Eek, I'd heard about the chicken pox outbreak on Nextdoor, from someone who insisted the country was going to rack and ruin because she couldn't find calamine lotion anywhere. 🙄

Hope he's not too bad, @Someaddedsugar. When mine got it, Ds2 just had a few spots and Ds1 was covered and absolutely miserable.

Thinkingblonde · 30/06/2022 23:35

Can I join? I’m originally from a town beginning with M, other side of the Tees to Stockton. I now live in a Victorian seaside town beginning with S, famous for it’s cliff lift and streets named after jewels.
Consider myself a Yorkshire lass as our county was North Yorks until the powers that be changed us to Cleveland and then Teesside. Add Saltburn and Cleveland to the mix.. is it any wonder aim confused.
anyway nice to meet you all.

lifelongfrugaleer · 01/07/2022 06:09

I love you town thinking. We go often

Someaddedsugar · 01/07/2022 06:26

Welcome @Thinkingblonde! I follow a few shops in your town on Instagram and can't wait to visit!

We did the oats in the bath thing last night - it worked but like you say I couldn't work out whether it was just through the distraction of having a ball of oats in the bath 😂.

Thankfully other than being itchy he's not too bad. Hoping it stays this way!

Hello Thinkingblonde. We love the beach down your direction. Don't go quite so far, we usually stop in one of the little car parks with loos near Marske and scramble down the cliff for lovely swimming and fossil hunting.

Thinkingblonde · 01/07/2022 07:31

Thank you for the welcome. Yes thee are some lovely quirky shops here, I love the card shop Holly Blue, There’s a farmers market in the town on the second Saturday of every month, centred around Station Square, opposite Sainsbury’s: lots of food stalls,; cheeses, pies, .gin, sausages, meat, vegetarian, craft beers, etc, craft stalls too. The Thai restaurant, Coco Rum, opposite the station is excellent and reasonably priced., Tomahawk Steak House has just opened up where the Vista Mar pub was. Don’t think we’ll be going much as I needed oxygen when I saw the prices.
The town is always busy at weekends and school hols. The Top prom on Marine Parade pleasant and if you walk along in the opposite direction to the cliff lift there’s a nice pathway down to the quieter wider part of the beach The lower prom has lots going on down there, beach huts ( for hire) the Amusement arcade, the fish and chip place, food shops,
If you don’t fancy walking that far there’s a set of steps near the White building more or less opposite the Marine pub. They both bring you to the beach and lower prom.
An Oat sock the bath water, an old remedy for soothing chicken pox and other itchy or dry skin conditions, it does work.

PickAChew · 01/07/2022 19:10

Ds1 and I went there on one of our big bus trips, BC @Thinkingblonde . Of course the sun came out when we were walking uphill.

A table spoon full of bicarb in the bath water as well as the oats helps with chicken pox spots.

Someaddedsugar · 01/07/2022 19:51

What is it that the oats actually do? We've used them the last two nights and DS says they stop the itching straight away!

Hoping the weather cheers up a bit so we can be out in the garden this weekend.

@Someaddedsugar magic!

It’s something to do with enzymes I think but dunno

AlviarinAesSedai · 02/07/2022 14:37

I wish I had known you could get a chicken pox vaccine. Hope you DS’s spots scab soon. I never knew about the oats, mine had piriton syrup and calamine lotion baths.
The weather is lovely today, happy July everyone.

I think it changes the PH balance in the water.
When my grandchildren got chicken pox about three years ago, my daughter got something from the chemist to put on the spots…just wish I could remember it.
Ive read Eurax cream is good.

Someaddedsugar · 02/07/2022 18:06

Happy July @AlviarinAesSedai.

I don't want to get my hopes up but I think we've got off lightly with the chicken pox. Only 20-30 spots and very little itching. I have absolutely everything crossed he can be back at nursery later next week as working from home while trying to keep him entertained is a challenge 😂.

We've found the oats and poxclin works really well. Couldn't find calamine lotion anywhere like you said @PickAChew. The pharmacist in Sainsburys said there's been outbreaks nationwide.

Really looking forward to the brass festival in Durham in a few weeks. It feels like ages since we last went!

I think 5he starches and oligaccharides that oats release act as an emollient. They're recommended for eczema, too.

Someaddedsugar · 05/07/2022 07:01

Well the oats were a success and DS will be back to nursery tomorrow 🙌🏻.

Hope everyone's having a good week!
