False title. Of course it is

It's my favourite film of all time. I love it SO MUCH. Was just thinking about it today, the scene where she tells her dad 'you let me down too'. It's coming of age, siblings/daughters, marriage, prejudice, love and a melancholy snapshot of a very particular time and place. I think it's fabulous.

GintyMcGinty · 21/08/2021 21:57

It's enjoyable but if you think it's the best film ever you need to see more films.

Hoolihan · 21/08/2021 21:59

Seen loads of fucking films thanks, it's still my favourite 😂

Sparklingbrook · 21/08/2021 22:04

Yes her Dad did let her down. By not giving Jonny what for!

SenecaFallsRedux · 21/08/2021 22:09

Have you not seen some of the threads on here? That age sort of age gap at 18 is very frowned upon.

I know it is. That's why I ask the question. I don't think people can really articulate the reasons very well. I think it depends on the person, and her level of maturity. I think having some sort of blanket "rule" about it is un-feminist.

Kanaloa · 21/08/2021 22:23

Surely at 18 she can date a 24 year old? Must say I did find the age gap in Call Me By Your Name a bit icky, but that was more because they cast Armie Hammer, who couldn’t pass for 23 in a room with no lights or windows. If they’d actually looked 18 & 23 I would have gotten on with it more. In Dirty Dancing they both look older.

Sparklingbrook · 21/08/2021 22:38

I think saying Baby and Jonny were ‘dating’ is stretching it a bit. There were no dates they were just shagging in his horrible room basically.

Antsinyourpanta · 21/08/2021 22:44

WHAT?!?! Rob Lowe looked like a Greek god in this and Patrick Swayze...faints
Fun fact: Ralph Macchio was about 28 in this playing a 16 year old. And he too was gorgeous. In fact I still wouldn't say no.
The only one not looking so hot was Tom Cruise. He deliberately chipped his tooth to get the part.
I was obsessed with the book and film as a young teen

I used to love the outsiders - agree Tom Cruise prob looked the worse out of all of them. I've never seen Matt Dillon look bad though. He is was my favourite.Blush

Sparklingbrook · 21/08/2021 22:49

Rob Lowe didn’t reach peak looks until St Elmo’s IMO

Dirty dancing - best film ever?
OrlandointheWilderness · 21/08/2021 23:16

Love the film, but bloody hell I've just watched that deleted scene.... thank god that wasn't in the film 😂!! So cringe

Papergirl1968 · 21/08/2021 23:18

I think Rob Lowe looks hottest now in 911 Lone Star - more rugged, less pretty. Plus he’s the captain, and the self deprecating character he plays makes him more attractive.
As for Dirty Dancing, yes, definitely one of the best films ever made, if not the best!
It’s a classic coming of age film and explores some serious issues including the innocent virgin who is also a guest being seduced by the older, been around the block a few times, dancer and member of staff. This was a time when “nice girls” didn’t have sex before marriage, remember.
Plus there’s the prejudice, abortion, and the father-daughter relationship as Baby’s dad is forced to see his little girl grow up fast, and to admit he was wrong about Johnny.
Plus it has great music, great dancing, and great chemistry between the two leads.
Considering it was a low budget movie, it had phenomenal success.

ExpatForLife · 21/08/2021 23:58

I was in the same room with Rob Lowe once in the 90s (at a charity event). Hands down the most beautiful human I have ever laid eyes on.

I am glad to hear that. He has always been my favourite, and still is. Nobody comes close.
Babyroobs · 22/08/2021 00:04

God I hate this film. And the songs are completely overplayed on the radio. I switch the radio off when i hear them.

disco123 · 22/08/2021 00:23

I think if you're imagining yourself as Baby's Mum you're just doing it wrong! You're supposed to be seeing yourself as Baby. Dancing with a dreamy, strong yet gentle, misunderstood hero 😍

If there was a movie about a teenager following all the rules and dating a man her mum approved of it would be a pretty boring film!

Sparklingbrook · 22/08/2021 00:37

Dancing with a dreamy, strong yet gentle, misunderstood hero

And shagging him in his grotty room. Grin In what way was he a hero though?

FriteFuaite · 22/08/2021 00:54

@Kyliealwayshadthebestdisco

I have never understood why other women enjoy this movie about a seriously creepy and predatory older man preying on a "just technically no longer a child" young woman. Except for the soundtrack which I will concede is good!
Omg, yes!! All this. Creepy, predatory and just yuck.
Holothane · 22/08/2021 01:41

To be honest I’ve never half of these films never wanted to and can’t be bothered,

Yahtze · 22/08/2021 02:08

You've got no soul or you're the wrong damn age if you don't keep a piece of your heart for DD. Damn.

Guineapigbridge · 22/08/2021 04:31

I'd watch Grease (Travolta version) a million times.

He helped save Penny! He picked her up when she was crying! He took responsibility for her to Baby's dad although he was not her boyfriend. He taught Baby to dance by Thursday so that Penny could go and have her abortion!

The deleted scene shagging is just awful and I'm going to pretend it doesn't exist. The real love scene is the hottest thing I've ever seen on screen Grin Along with the montage bit where he strokes her arm and at first she giggles, but then goes all sultry. Apparently that and other training stuff, the bumped heads, feet tramping etc was real and Swayzes real frustrated response to her giggling. He was really teaching her to dance and they had a real tension together that you can sense. I think that's what makes it so sexy.

Kanaloa · 22/08/2021 13:07

Having thought about it, I don’t get why a random guest had the step in and learn to dance within a week. Surely there were other dance staff, not just one man and one woman? I mean when Baby carried the watermelon there was about a hundred people dancing quite well in that room, couldn’t one of them fill in for Penny?

badgerswitharms · 22/08/2021 13:25

They did allude to that - said they were busy. Obviously it's hard to believe they were ALL busy but he said they didn't have time to learn the routine. Whilst Jonny had all the time in the world to play with baby.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 22/08/2021 13:28

None of the plot makes any sense at all does it really? Grin Best not to dig too deeply probably.

HannaHat · 22/08/2021 13:31

Hmm, Jason Patric is and was always better looking than Rob Lowe 🤔

I don’t mind a bit of Dirty Dancing, but it doesn’t hold up to much scrutiny.
