False title. Of course it is

Intrigued by references here to the deleted scene ... is it that bad?!

Sparklingbrook · 21/08/2021 14:56

I found this re the ages-

The movie is set in 1963, and Baby is 18, while Jonny is 24. In real life Jennifer Grey was 26 when she was cast as Baby, a character that was intended to be fresh out of high school. When Patrick Swayze was cast to play the role of Johnny in the film, he was 34

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 21/08/2021 14:59

No. Stand by Me or The Outsiders is. Obvs

TickyTok · 21/08/2021 15:03

@Sparklingbrook

My favourite eighties films are About Last Night and St Elmo’s Fire. St Elmo’s Fire doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny at all now. But there’s Rob Lowe. So…
Two words: The Outsiders Rob Lowe + Patrick Swayze + Tom Cruise

It's so awkward.

However thanks to the hip thrusting I can imagine what it would be like to have sex with Patrick. I can't decide if that's good or bad, he was better in my head.

Tom Cruise looks bloody awful in 'The Outsiders'.

Sparklingbrook · 21/08/2021 18:04

Nobody looked that good in The Outsiders TBF, they were all very young and yet to grow into their looks (or not, depending).

She was a very young (innocent) 18 year old though wasn't she?

WHAT?!?! Rob Lowe looked like a Greek god in this and Patrick Swayze... faints Fun fact: Ralph Macchio was about 28 in this playing a 16 year old. And he too was gorgeous. In fact I still wouldn't say no. The only one not looking so hot was Tom Cruise. He deliberately chipped his tooth to get the part. I was obsessed with the book and film as a young teen Smile
Sparklingbrook · 21/08/2021 18:20

She certainly was @shinynewapple21, but the older sleazy, been around the block dance teacher sorted that right out. Grin

Hoorayhenryyah · 21/08/2021 18:25

The music and the dancing are what make the movie. I think the woman who plays baby is so wooden!

Chikapu · 21/08/2021 18:26

That deleted scene, bloody hell, pass the eye bleach.

'Yeah, I always wondered this. I understand PS was the dance instructor, as was Penny, as well as doing the makeovers. But who were all the others? What did they do? Why were they in some secret staff nightclub that needed watermelons? Why were they ALL dancing like that!'

I assumed they were just staff members: instructors; waiters; chambermaids; handymen. They're just living in staff quarters and with a rec room where they dance. It's not an unlikely scenario for young people to enjoy dancing, surely, even if they weren't specifically dance instructors?

I'm really overthinking 'Dirty Dancing'.

Haha me too with the overthinking! I just thought it odd that (from memory) you never saw any of the others from the nightclub doing anything around the camp. I think Robbie said ‘Oh it’s the entertainment staff’ but all we ever saw was that comedian, PS and Penny.
iklboo · 21/08/2021 18:30

Nope. Hate it. Awful film. Though I know people love it.

Tom Cruise apparently took his caps off his teeth in The Outsiders to look even tougher. He was pretty good in TAPS (quite an underrated film with very young Sean Penn & Timothy Hutton).

Hoorayhenryyah · 21/08/2021 18:30

Also just watched the deleted scene on YouTube, id never heard of it before. 2 mins of dry humping hell. Painfully awkward

Chosennone · 21/08/2021 18:37

I bloody love Dirty Dancing. I love the 'entertainment team' the one thats always chewing and they all have bra straps on show etc! There is a female dancing sort of bunny hopping and dancing with a group in one outdoor scene and I don't think its Penny.
The final scene is just amazing. The way the audience get really into the cheesy 8ps song, the old ladies tossing off their fur Stoles and Max standing their mouth agape in shock Grin
I did a few seasons as entertainment staff in a well known UK holiday chain and things got very sordid and seedy 'after hours' just wish there was some actual dirty dancing!

FBDO got picked apart and slated on here recently. because basically Ferris is a massive bully to Cameron.

I wouldn't agree with that.

They bickered a lot and Ferris was bossy, but they were more like siblings than friends, you could see they loved each other and Ferris was going to own up to protect Cameron in the end. Cameron even said it is possible to stand up to Ferris in that scene.

Similar to Ferris and Jeanie winding each other up, but she helped him in the end.

I'm just the messenger but here's the post from the thread-

Ferris Bueller is an awful film. He's a spoilt, selfish, bullying arsehole who treats his supposed best friend like shit. I loved it when it came out - my son watched it when he was a teen and pointed out how dreadful it was and he was right.

Hated DD, load of rubbish, but loved PS. Scmaltzy though it is, still enjoy Ghost (mostly because of WG tbf) but he was just fantastic in Keeping Mum. Just so funny and cheerfully prepared to look like a total knob (particularly in the leather thong scene 🤣). Really sad to think he may already have been ill when it was filmed.
If you haven’t watched it, please do. Quiet, little gem of a (dark comedy) film.

Dirty Dancing has a strong feminist vibe, and I have always loved it for that.

And yes, in the movie, Baby and Johnny are actually fairly close in age. She's has graduated from high school and headed for university.

Marmelace · 21/08/2021 21:14

Nope, couldn't stand it. My best film ever is Calamity Jane with Doris Day.

She's meant to be 18 and him 24. Not that close in age when you are young.

So what's the acceptable age for your romantic partner when you are an adult woman of 18?

Have you not seen some of the threads on here? That age sort of age gap at 18 is very frowned upon.

I'm not sure how I would feel if my DS (18) started sleeping with a 24 year old female dance instructor on a family holiday TBF.

I think everyone has their own thoughts about acceptable age gaps don't they?
