False title. Of course it is

Just watched the deleted scene though Shock

StickyProblem · 21/08/2021 13:03

I think it's wonderful.

When I was young I identified with Baby and how youth and inexperience seem such insurmountable obstacles in the confusing adult world. What a fantastic coming of age that would have been!!

Then I watched it again in my late 30s, expecting to just enjoy the romance. I cried buckets, seeing for the first time the tragedy of Johnny's situation, sure he's sexy, confident and attractive but that's just age. He's a prisoner of his class and the joy of loving his job comes at the cost of being at the beck and call of these awful people. What's his future? And the final theme song that Patrick Swayze wrote shows that he absolutely understood that angle of the story.

Couldn't watch it again, it's too powerful!

@SupermanWithTheGreyHair

I shall give it a try. I think it’s on Netflix, I’ve almost watched it a few times and like a few of the actors so really not sure why I haven’t. I hated La la land so hoping it’s not as bad as that.
I find people singing to each other makes me want to chew my own arm off with cringe. Grin But if you accept that it's dreadful before you watch if you enjoy it, it's a bonus. Grin

You’re making me laugh. 😂😂😂 You’re really selling it to me. 😂😂😂 Sounds like it will be best watched with a glass of wine or three. 😂 Shall make OH watch if with me later, he will literally watch anything.

If you put the subtitles on you can sing along. Wine Wine Wine

@SamiReed1

Nope. Watched it a few times and I still can't figure out what the eff it was about - apart from dancing that is. I can't figure out the back story, why they were there, why Swayze's character was leaving, etc. I don't understand any of what the movie was actually about, none of it made sense. And the dancing was pretty unremarkable and routine stuff anyway. I loved the soundtrack though.
Yeah, I always wondered this. I understand PS was the dance instructor, as was Penny, as well as doing the makeovers. But who were all the others? What did they do? Why were they in some secret staff nightclub that needed watermelons? Why were they ALL dancing like that!
SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 21/08/2021 13:17

And I thought my Saturday night was going to be boring. 😂 May have to pop out for more alcohol in readiness. 😂

ExpatForLife · 21/08/2021 13:19

It's not the best but it is the most rewatchable.

I know there's a Mamma Mia 2 and is there a third? The one with Cher in? Grin You are going to need so much wine. Please report back.

I assumed they were just staff members: instructors; waiters; chambermaids; handymen. They're just living in staff quarters and with a rec room where they dance. It's not an unlikely scenario for young people to enjoy dancing, surely, even if they weren't specifically dance instructors?

I'm really overthinking 'Dirty Dancing'.

Sparklingbrook · 21/08/2021 13:50

It's a bit unvelievable that when baby (a holidaying guest and not staff) arrived to the dirty dancing party with her watermelon, all the staff didn't just kick her out again. [confused[

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 21/08/2021 13:58

Well, she was with another staff member. Swayze's ginger cousin. She didn't take it upon herself to go down there. They weren't thrilled by her presence, anyway, from memory.

Yes, I get that. but they wouldn't want a guest seeing what goes on in the staff quarters, surely and would tell ginger cousin to show her back to her chalet immediately.

But obviously that wouldn't have helped the daft plot.

Oh dear god.... there’s more than one. 😬 Will stock up on wine. Told OH of our plans tonight, he’s looking forward to it....we clearly need to get out more. 😂 Will report back.

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 21/08/2021 14:14

Oh, fuck knows. Guest-wise, I'm sure they were at greater risk from Johnny fucking the woman with sticky-out ears and a halter dress. What was Baby going to say? That she saw some non-Hays Code dancing? The whole frigging film is bs, anyway.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 21/08/2021 14:26

This thread is great. I was too busy admiring Patrick Swayze to put as much thought into this film as you all have. But now these questions have been asked, I’m not sure this film will ever be the same again. 🍉 🤣

badgerswitharms · 21/08/2021 14:31

So I wrote this post when I'd had a bit too much to drink and forgot about it. I checked in on mumsnet and was so excited to see the thread title, thought it had been started by someone else!

However loving all the dirty dancing geeking out. I didn't know about the deleted scenes, are you just talking about the "fight harder Francis" ending or is there something else I'm missing?!

Everything wrong with Dirty Dancing in 8 minutes. Grin

I've linked it up there ^^ a bit ago, it's the dry grinding dancing. Bleurgh.
badgerswitharms · 21/08/2021 14:46

That movie sins clip is ace.

I realise the film is ridiculous. But I still love it so much. Sir Patrick of Swaze has been "the one" since I was 8.

I might get my husband to shake a hip and stare moodily off into the distance.

He could walk around like he has a stick up his bum and then you could re-enact the deleted scene if you are feeling bendy today. Grin

badgerswitharms · 21/08/2021 14:50

Oh god I've finally managed to safe crack the deleted scene. That was hideous. Not helped that the kids are in the room so it was on silent.

What the fuck were they thinking?!

OP posts:
moofolk · 21/08/2021 14:52

Reading complaints about the sexual politics.

She's about 18, he's supposed to be only about 20 apparently.

She instigated everything. It's a coming of age film so she goes from naive girl to (slightly more) savvy woman.

It deals with class and abortion and sleaze (the boy who gets the dancer pregnant and goes out with the sister).

Dance films are the only American films that deal with class.

It's great.

At least it wasn't in the film, we were spared. Grin
