How old were you when you first got a mortgage?

My DD is 22 and buying her first house. She was lucky to leave university and get a well paid job and really wants to get onto the property ladder. (We are assisting with a deposit however!)

Anyway it got me thinking - how old were you when you got your mortgage? I was 30 odd so 22 seems very young to me

21 and paid off just before turning 40. Still in same house and no plans to move.

Blossomtoes · 18/06/2021 21:34

37 in 1991. Nobody bought early in the circles I moved in.

  1. 30 years later I still have a mortgage with 20 years on it though, I've moved a lot and taken a 25 year deal each time

21 and got told by friends at the time I was being boring as I worked and saved alot. Didnt go on all holidays (some not all) did have deposit help from parents but matched what I saved. No right or wrong way. Experiences V long term plans. But in my 3rd forever home and definitely feel I made the right choice now. Good for her

  1. In London. £80k deposit.
moonbedazzled · 18/06/2021 21:54

25, on my own in 1985. Wanted to buy a washing machine on 6mths interest free credit and the salesman didn't want to sell it me because there was no man listed on the credit agreement form. He wouldn't believe that a young woman could own a house on their own!!

PinkElephant7 · 18/06/2021 21:54

21 & no help with deposit

honeyfox · 18/06/2021 21:56

40, a couple of years ago. I had savings and a small inheritance before then and working 15 years but could still not afford to buy until I met DH.

edwinbear · 18/06/2021 21:57

20, whilst in my 3rd year at Uni with 22yr old boyfriend who was working. Used my student loan as a deposit. Bought him out 2yrs later.

butterry · 18/06/2021 22:02

In 2006 when I was 22 with 50k deposit from my parents and my then boyfriend's parents

meikyo · 18/06/2021 22:04

My DD is 18 now and, all going well, will complete on purchasing her first home next month. She has an 85% mortgage and saved the deposit herself. I have chipped in a bit to help with the offer over home report value (we are in Scotland). She's buying on her own. She had planned to go to University but after leaving school in 2020 got a full time job in the NHS. I think she's doing the right thing. It's a one bed flat.
