How old were you when you first got a mortgage?

My DD is 22 and buying her first house. She was lucky to leave university and get a well paid job and really wants to get onto the property ladder. (We are assisting with a deposit however!)

Anyway it got me thinking - how old were you when you got your mortgage? I was 30 odd so 22 seems very young to me

Dh and I were both 25 (although not married then). We had 100% graduate mortgage and paid without any problems. We’ve since been able to afford to move again into a much bigger house. It’s a shame 100% mortgages have gone. They helped many people like me and dh get onto the property ladder.

  1. Had a £6k inheritance which was my deposit and got a job that paid me a relocation allowance which included all legal fees and money for fixtures/fittings so that paid for new carpets and curtains throughout. And then I lived in my lovely flat for a long time with just a double bed that my mum bought for me, a chair that I’d had since childhood and a sofa I got in the DFS sale. My tv was a very old chunky thing and I had it sat on a stool which was the only other furniture I owned. I saved and bought as and when I could, it was brilliant and I only wish it could be as achievable for my DC.

  1. No help from family. We paid off my master's degree loan (£10,000) and my husband's US student loans first (£40,000)- that in itself would have been a decent house deposit. I get very grumpy when family members complain that we decided on a registry office wedding!

We exchanged contracts on our first house on my 30th birthday.

18! That was in 2004. I bought a house that was at the peak of prices in the area. All these years later and its worth less than when i bought it and still has 16 years on the mortgage. Thankfully, I rent it out and bought another home with my hubby in 2012.

8 weeks shy of 21. We did get a leg up with the deposit though.
