How old were you when you first got a mortgage?

My DD is 22 and buying her first house. She was lucky to leave university and get a well paid job and really wants to get onto the property ladder. (We are assisting with a deposit however!)

Anyway it got me thinking - how old were you when you got your mortgage? I was 30 odd so 22 seems very young to me

22 - 30 years ago when such things were affordable.

Delphigirl · 18/06/2021 21:00

That was in 1988

I'm hoping I'll be 33, I'll probably be 34 though (depends if we find something quickly).

21, back in the days when you could quickly save up a deposit, and the building society manager made a personal judgment on whether you were a safe bet.

Zenithbear · 18/06/2021 21:06

23 no bank of mum and dad in those days.
One of our dc has beaten me by buying at 22 albeit with an inheritance.
Also with an inheritance (and good jobs) one of our dc, not quite 30, has two rentals as well as a home.

19 with a 100% endowment mortgage Shock

Remortgaged at 25 onto a C&R mortgage in a bigger house. I am within 2 years of paid off now.

I was advised to buy at 19 by a friend and it was the best decision I made.

I was at uni and bought a house to live in and rent rooms to friends from the beginning of 2nd year.
My course was 7yrs, in a northern city where you could buy cheap houses and I had a job before uni and in my holidays which paid really well so I had a decent deposit.
My friends rent paid my mortgage. I was very lucky.

RumHoney · 18/06/2021 21:08

25 with help from my parents for the deposit.
